What's one feature you would like MN to have?

I know MN is a clunky and simple forum and many love it for that reason, but I was wondering if you could add any feature what would it be?

Recently i've been using a forum with undo / redo buttons and it's such a useful addition that every time I delete a part of a post on MN I find myself wishing they had a similar feature.

I think they’re considering a like button, but so the likes are only visible to the posted. I filled in a survey about it a week or two ago - or did I dream that?

It's billed as a 'thank' button.

madeinmanc · 03/08/2023 18:54

Some way of viewing a condensed version of the thread. Some are fifteen plus pages, and you end up commenting without being able to read through every page. Reddit has an advantage there for getting through the most important posts to get to the most important points. Maybe a highlights view of the most liked posts? Or just a reading view that is visually more condensed so you could skim read without clicking "next page" so many times and waiting for it to load? 🤔

WhateverMate · 03/08/2023 18:55

A like button.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 03/08/2023 18:56

Polling on topics other than AIBU.

twilighteaser · 03/08/2023 18:58

Like or Love or similar. Edit & Delete.

Whinge · 03/08/2023 18:58

Not once in all the time I've used the forums, people genuinely only really use it 99% of the time to correct mistakes or clarify a point.

Yes, it seems like some posters on MN really let their imaginations run away with them and imagine all sort of nefarious behaviour, when the reality is much more boring. Grin

A function that takes me to the point where I commented on someone else's post

I use the bookmark feature, but if I forget it's a real pain to find where I last ended up on a thread.

It's billed as a 'thank' button.

So a like button by another name? Although it doesn't really work as well as a like button, as I don't often want to thank posters, but I do want to like and agree with what they've posted.

Two changes to the quote function:

  1. ability to only quote a selection of text

  2. a link in the reply back to the original post (e.g." @middlelanehogger said at 6:45pm: blah blah" and the bolded bit is a link to jump back to the context)

(Bonus for also doing this for replies to specific posts, e.g. "in reply to @middlelanehogger at 6:45pm..." at the top of the post, which also is a link back)

I do like the sequential discussion rather than threading like Reddit, but some small tweaks like this would make some things more clear.

The survey suggested it would only be visible to the person who'd commented, not to others on the thread.

A function that takes me to the point where I commented on someone else's post, so that I don't have to scroll through loads of pages to read comments made after mine.

You can do this. Or at least I can. Confused

Whinge · 03/08/2023 19:06

Polling on topics other than AIBU.

Yes, I never quite understood why it wasn't a feature on chat. Not ever poll answer is YABU or YANBU.

ability to only quote a selection of text

Having quoted many parts of posts on this thread that would be incredibly useful, especially if the post being quoted is a long one. It would also be really helpful for AMA,

What is even the point of the my feed thing? Really weird.

Honestly I've still not got a clue? I've read multiple explanations from MNHQ and I'm genuinely none the wiser. It's almost like a focus group of interns were told to invent something no one wanted or asked for and which doesn't actually serve any discernable purpose.

Calistano · 03/08/2023 19:08

I think all of the interesting discussion has gone private, nobody likes a pile on (bots)

Whinge · 03/08/2023 19:12

The survey suggested it would only be visible to the person who'd commented, not to others on the thread

So only the person thanking and the person who has been thanked can see it? I think it might frustrate a lot of users, especially as there's clearly a demand for a like button. Introducing something close but not actually the requested feature seems like an odd decision by MNHQ

You can do this. Or at least I can.

Do you use the bookmark feature, or does it take you their automatically?

Being able to view search items by latest or earliest date.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 03/08/2023 19:16

@Whinge if you go into a thread via "threads I'm on" then it takes you to the posts that have been posted since you were last on it.

UsingChangeofName · 03/08/2023 19:19

@MillicentTrilbyHiggins - how do you make it do that ?
I always start with 'Threads I'm on' but it just says '17 new posts' or something. How do I get it back to where I'd read up to ?

Mine doesn't? It just takes me to where I last bookmarked. If I forgot to bookmark the last post I read it doesn't take me to that one but instead the one I bookmarked previously even if it was quite a while back.

Click on the thread title in TIO

Oh yea, bookmarks 'override' the comment. So if you comment you need to unbookmark the bookmarked comment.

Definitely this! It needs an edit button

I just did a quick experiment on this thread and this does not work for me. I scrolled to the top of this page bookmarked the post and then scrolled to the last post again. When I clicked on the title from threads I'm on it took me to the bookmarked post?

Does it only work if you don't use any bookmarks on the thread? If so what's the point in the bookmark feature?

Cross posted. Ok so why on earth do we have a bookmark feature???

The bookmark overrides the comment. I don't know why. I bookmark threads I'm reading but don't want to comment on.

I like my feed! Often use it to quickly check for new posts in obscure topics I like.
