Given that the poster in question is complaining about Sinead O'connor being referred to by the name she used for 99% of her life, is used throughout the media, and is known by across the world, they obviously don't agree that "it's not a time for semantics".

That's literally what the purpose of her posts was. To complain about semantics.

The rest of us were mourning the untimely death of a hugely talented, courageous, abused and troubled woman and sharing our memories of her and her incredible work and life.

That poster decided to turn it into a lecture on semantics, but apparently can't be bothered to use the "correct" language according to their own beliefs.

Fair enough!

i bet she would have liked to be remembered for her music above all
what an amazing voice

We were washing our hands in the ladies of a restaurant many years ago, standing next to each other. She was utterly utterly beautiful. The most exquisite face. RIP Sinead 😢

TinyPurpleFishes · 27/07/2023 18:50

I hadn’t been following her life recently and hadn’t realised she also used the name Sinead O’Connor, I was purely going on her previous comments about how strongly she disliked the name for certain reasons and wished to be known as Shahuda from that point onwards. Likewise, I also knew her as a headscarf wearing woman, if she had decided to not wear it anymore than that is absolutely fair. I was basing my comment about it being disrespectful after her death to call her by a name she hated and by sharing photos of her without her headscarf but I’m more than happy to stand corrected. I’m very happy that she is not being disrespected. I do however still feel that her Muslim identity is being erased by the media/individuals as that was such a huge basis of her incredible beliefs and actions in this world that are being remembered and celebrated.

Reverted/converted - that really is semantics! Compete non-issue.

Just re her Muslim name, i have to (just speaking for me personally) admit to blindness of names i don't immediately recognise. I had to scroll back up for Shahuda. But i would never try and misname someone. Most of the people calling Shahuda her original name wouldn't even know she'd changed her name. Times change so fast and people are slow to catch up. It's not always an insult.

She will be. It's a pity that it's going to be after she's gone. I hope she can look down now and see. Who knows. Great songs.

Brilliant, brave, talented woman. She was the epitome of what the Irish Catholic establishment despised - angry, outspoken and truthful. I loved her for it, growing up in Ireland in the 1980s. She started something long before people were ready to listen. A trailblazer. So sorry that you’re gone Sinead.

I completely understand that, my comment (which I stand corrected about in regards to her using the name Sinéad and appearing without her scarf online) was more towards the media who absolutely did know due to their thinly veiled mocking of her being a Muslim woman whilst she was alive. Also there are many who claimed to be massive fans of her as a person (as well as her music) and how much they respected her courageous actions and morality whilst completely denying the Islamic foundations of her attributes they respected the most, and denying her Muslim identity entirely because it tarnished the image they had built of her in their minds. She claimed she had been a Muslim her entire life without realising until she studied Islam as her beliefs and attributes aligned with the teachings of Islam so significantly, so I don’t think it should be dismissed as something minor by people that admire her, her Islamic views were what made her such an incredible woman who fought for a better world.

Love this. Saw her in Finsbury Park and remember vividly her voice singing In This Heart. Still remember the thrill of seeing a punchy irish girl with attitude on Top of the Pops. Wonderful voice, could sing anything and make it hers. Her version of My Lagan Love is just so beautiful. An absolutely unique talent and a fiercely just person.

I think Shuhada would be upset that the name being used in the news of her death is Sinead O’Connor. I understand that she was famous and known well by that name, but she strongly disliked it as she “wanted to be free of patriarchal slave names. Free of the parental curses.”

Upon conversion she stated “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant."

She chose the name Shuhada Sadaqat meaning “witness to truth”.

As a hijabi she would be distraught that all the headline photos are of her not wearing a headscarf. This is not how she chose to present to the world. It also reeks of ageism - why are all the photos of her when she was very young? She is still very recognisable in recent photos, she was very striking mA.

Shuhada was such a strong Muslim woman who was dedicated to creating a better world and it’s like her identity is being erased and dismissed, which is very disrespectful.

May Allah honour and elevate her to the highest ranks of Jannah 🤍

Completely agree, especially the images of her pre hijab.

Convert? Surely you mean revert?

Are you Muslim?

and a convert at that?

i am, and i utterly loathe being called a revert, I think it’s a misunderstanding of the concept of fitrah and I actually find it really patronising.

so personally I’ll always speaking of converting rather than reverting

Any insight to the cause of death? 56 is young. Given past attempts is it looking like she has sadly taken her own life?

The news said she had a troubled childhood and spent time in care. Her sons was taken away from her and was found dead (was that suicide?) … and she’d suffered with mental health as an adult …. How tragic … I suspect suicide too

Zonder · 28/07/2023 07:00

Her son's death was definitely suicide, tragically, @T1Dmama

Lemieux7 · 28/07/2023 07:54

Sinead suffered the most terrible abuse at the hands of her mother - I can't imagine how awful that must have been for her.

Willmafrockfit · 28/07/2023 07:59

Absolutely this.

I'm finding all the wailing by the media quite disturbing actually. Why could she not have received the plaudits when she was alive?

Another woman dismissed as mad, laughed at, jeered at because she spoke out. I can't stop thinking of her as a young woman being booed and bullied by a crowd of thousands - because she spoke out.

I found this video and wanted to share it. I am sure it must be about her faith. I'm not religious at all but I cannot listen to this without weeping big wet tears. It's so beautiful.
