I think Shuhada would be upset that the name being used in the news of her death is Sinead O’Connor. I understand that she was famous and known well by that name, but she strongly disliked it as she “wanted to be free of patriarchal slave names. Free of the parental curses.”

Upon conversion she stated “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant."

She chose the name Shuhada Sadaqat meaning “witness to truth”.

As a hijabi she would be distraught that all the headline photos are of her not wearing a headscarf. This is not how she chose to present to the world. It also reeks of ageism - why are all the photos of her when she was very young? She is still very recognisable in recent photos, she was very striking mA.

Shuhada was such a strong Muslim woman who was dedicated to creating a better world and it’s like her identity is being erased and dismissed, which is very disrespectful.

May Allah honour and elevate her to the highest ranks of Jannah 🤍

I hope you are not offended by this, i do not mean to offend, but in Ireland anyway, her conversion to Islam was met with a bit of an eyeroll and an attitude of 'ah sure she's at it again'. It wasn't taken seriously. But you make an excellent point about the vast majority of pictures and the name being used are those prior to her becoming a muslim.

Aisling28 · 27/07/2023 11:53

She had tweeted recently and I think had used her name Sinead O Connor so had obviously been using it again.

Not offended - it’s very common when people convert. Eye rolls and talk of mental illness, etc etc. Even if other people mocked her while alive (I’m not sure she could have cared less), by completely erasing her identity and going against her wishes after death is such a disrespectful thing to do. Her religion was a joke to others but incredibly important to her, she believed she had been Muslim her entire life without realising as what our religion teaches aligned so much with her lifelong beliefs.

She continued to perform under the name Sinéad O'Connor

I suppose a huge part of her career was prior to her declaring herself as a Muslim, so it follows when they're depicting her whole career, these pictures will be used in order to convey her journey from beginning to end. But i do think many people didn't take it seriously.

This was her new Twitter account, set up earlier this month. It uses mainly Sinead, although Shahid is in the handle.

With respect, from another Irishwoman of SO'C's generation, converting from Catholicism, particularly in its Irish variety, to Islam on the grounds of rejecting patriarchy, makes absolutely zero sense.

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2023 13:25

i guess this is like Cat Stevens - Yusuf Islam

Lilifer · 27/07/2023 13:32

Is there anywhere online where you can see a full compilation of all the duets that Sinead o Connor did? For eg that beautiful duet with Terry Hall from the Specials, and she sang at one concert with Neil Finn, I keep seeing clips online of lots of different collaborations it would be great to be able to collect them all as I asolutely loved this singer and the world is a lesser place without Sinead.

She released a video of herself a couple of weeks ago in which her head was bare.

Taytocrisps · 27/07/2023 14:02

I'm aware that Sinéad converted to Islam in 2018. However, she was ordained a priest in the Latin Tridentine Church in 1999. So I think most people (like me) assumed that she was experimenting with different religions. Also, converting to Islam made no sense when she had such strong feminist views. I think this is why people were so slow to accept her conversion. She may well have changed her mind in 5 or 10 years time and left Islam or even invented her own religion.

ETA I'm an atheist so I've no skin in the game - I'm not trying to claim her for any religion.

Saucery · 27/07/2023 15:33

She always seemed to be searching for a belief system that would help her to come to terms with her problems. I’m not sure any patriarchal faith could have done that. But now we’ll never know, sadly. I do agree that a lot of the media coverage concentrated on images of her when she was younger, which I’m sure would have raised a wry laugh or something stronger from her, because she never wanted to be defined by her looks.

My favourite song by her is Jackie. A simple folk ballad about a fisherman’s wife who haunts the shore waiting for her husband to return. Sends the cliched shivers down me whenever I hear it. She had the perfect voice for non-twee folk songs. I’m glad she never let the music business shove her in a particular box, though I’m sure they tried.

We did a short story on school about someone waiting to come on on a fishing boat, they never came back. In Irish. I wonder was it inspired by that? It was pure desolation.

Saucery · 27/07/2023 16:07

@Chickenkeev She wrote it herself as a teenager, it seems, based on a TV play she’d watched. But it’s a very common theme for ghost stories, folk songs etc and her performance of it draws in all the loss and desolation of the different versions. Just with her voice and a simple backing. Incredible.

Lots of assumptions there. She still was known professionally as Sinéad O'Connor and most photos of her, including recent ones, are with her head uncovered.

I agree with the PP that if she wanted to be free of the patriarchy,

I suppose all themes are universal at the end of the day. She was a very intelligent woman by all accounts.

Convert? Surely you mean revert?

Chickenkeev · 27/07/2023 16:19

Ray D'Arcy saying how he wanted to 'mind her'. I'd love to give him a slap, patronising wanker.

It's not really a time for semantics tbf. It was clear what she was saying.

themessygarden · 27/07/2023 16:37

I read an interview she did when she was breaking up with the father of her new born daughter, and the reason she gave was that 'she just wanted someone to mind her !' and he was too busy extricating himself from his marriage to Mary Coughlan (he was already separated when he and Sinead got together) and he didn't have the capacity to 'mind her or hug her, and she is just a new mam and she needed that like all new mams need', it is a heartbreaking interview to read now. All she wanted was someone to love her.

themessygarden · 27/07/2023 16:39

I mixed up the fathers, it was the father of her youngest son.

Given that the poster in question is complaining about Sinead O'connor being referred to by the name she used for 99% of her life, is used throughout the media, and is known by across the world, they obviously don't agree that "it's not a time for semantics".

That's literally what the purpose of her posts was. To complain about semantics.

The rest of us were mourning the untimely death of a hugely talented, courageous, abused and troubled woman and sharing our memories of her and her incredible work and life.

That poster decided to turn it into a lecture on semantics, but apparently can't be bothered to use the "correct" language according to their own beliefs.

This is the last video that she posted. She posted it under the name Sinead O'connor and she is not wearing a hijab or any other kind of head covering.

Please don't try to turn her tragic death into something else entirely.
