What’s the most random thing you are packing in your suitcase for holidays?

I will start, we are about to go on a fly cruise, just packing the cases and for my toddler I am packing a straight vegetable peeler. He likes apples a lot, but doesn’t like the skin so we have to peel it off.
I figured they will most likely have apples on the buffet on board but it feels like a faff to find someone and ask them to peel it for him therefore I have brought a new peeler to pack in his case this morning.

Asked DP to guess what the most random thing we are packing to take with us was and he guessed potatoes close but no 😂

Can anyone beat a peeler?

An old chewing gum tub full of soap shavings! Close to your peeler.

It´s a small waterproof tub with a flip lid. I shave the short end of a bar of soap into little curls and store them, then have them at hand if I need to wash my hands where there´s no soap. I initially made it for camping, but it works on the beach, in restaurants/bars, by a lake, picnic on the river etc.

A multi point electric extension lead-then you only need 1 adapter plug

haggisaggis · 26/07/2023 15:45

Egg cups. Self catering in US and the houses never have egg cups (and I like a boiled egg for breakfast)

Stove top waffle iron for a week in a UK cottage.

My neti pot as it's the only thing that relieves cold or tickly allergy symptoms in my nose.

Jar of marmite, eating it keeps mosquitos away.

We have just come back from a cruise. The strangest thing was probably the bag of carrots for DS (autistic and arfid)

with regards apples - we actually contacted p and o in advance and had a bowl of apples in the cabin when we arrived!

Interesting thread this.

I'm currently away and as I was sat on the tarmac at Stansted the other day I saw the baggage handlers load hundreds of cases on to the plane.

It got me wondering what people put in them as no f**r seems to get dressed up for dinner anymore.

Maybe I'm just bitter but I wasn't playing Ryanair's silly games with luggage charges. What started off as a token couple of quid for a 10kg case is now £30+ e/w each. Sod that.

Shoving everything into a 40x25x20 rucksack certainly focuses the mind!

We used to have to take a toddler toilet seat - one of the ones for when they're toilet training when our eldest was little as she was scared of falling in the toilet

Kattykatty · 26/07/2023 16:06

I always take sellotape on holiday, which my husband finds hilarious, but it's so useful! I mostly use it to tape up toiletries so they don't leak in the suitcase, but I've also used it for an emergency sandles fix in the past, and for taping up food packaging etc.

I was most upset when my roll of sellotape was confiscated at airport security once - they must have thought I was planning on taking someone hostage with it 🤔

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 26/07/2023 16:07

Pegs for keeping towels on the sunbed - place we are going to is supposed to be breezy & my mum said they were one of her best purchases ever for hols!

dementedpixie · 26/07/2023 16:11

Blue curaçao so we could make blue lagoon cocktails. Was neatly bubble wrapped in the suitcase. Also had a meat probe as we were using the bbq. Sharp knives (wrapped in a tea towel in the case for safety).

eveoha · 26/07/2023 16:14

A quick unpick 🙄 husband has an aversion to clothes labels 😊👍🏿☘️

SouthCountryGirl · 26/07/2023 16:21

Probably my dry robe!

minipie · 26/07/2023 16:26

Tape here too. I actually didn’t take it this time, regretted it

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2023 16:29

Ooh nothing mentioned on this list and most likely nothing unusual at all! I’m very boring 😂

dementedpixie · 26/07/2023 16:29

I had my sellotape too so I could bubble wrap any fragile gifts we bought.

One year we took vodka and gin home in the case in the fancy bubble wrap with long tubes of air that we bought in Lanzarote.

Salted butter, because the unsalted version get abroad is grim.

NannyGythaOgg · 26/07/2023 16:51

Plastic picnic knife. Carry on only so a proper knife is not allowed but so useful. Blow up pillow, great on the plane, on the sunbed and on the bed if there is only one pillow.
Silk pillow case. My hair is curly and dry and gets knotted but much better with a sil pillowase. Takes up very little room and so much more comfortable. (I take it off during the day to make sure it doesn't get mixed up with the hotel laundry

NannyGythaOgg · 26/07/2023 16:53

Oh, and a small roll of plastic bags in case I want to 'take away' some of my food, if there's too much

Cyclistmumgrandma · 26/07/2023 17:11

A spare pair of elastic no-tie shoe laces. Arthritic fingers mean I can't tie laces anymore without quite severe pain. Don't want holiday spoilt for something as daft as a broken lace. Last holiday I took an elastic washing line and some detergent sheets. Proved very useful. Will take them again as we set off soon for a month in Canada with only carry on luggage!

Dontlistitonfacebook · 26/07/2023 17:18

Scissors

Sharp knife

Coasters

Pepper mill

I have used them all.

reluctantbrit · 26/07/2023 17:45

Pocket knife - always
We also have the large pegs after too many years of battling towels on sunbeds.

I took several evening outfits on holiday. Didn't wear any because it was too hot. Didn't even dry my hair or bother with make up after the first night 🙄

I took scissors to cut off any labels from the new clothes that I didn't wear.

(Brilliant holiday though)

Where are you going that you don't get unsalted butter?!

cocksstrideintheevening · 26/07/2023 18:13
