Social worker my medical history

Shouldichangename · 25/07/2023 20:34

So my family have a social worker as we reached out for help. Anyway social worker looked at My medical back ground and she bought up that I was diagnosed with assertive personality in 1995. I never even knew I was diagnosed with that first i have ever heard. I was only 18 then. Is it even relivent after all that time. ? Is it odd to dig that far back?

Social workers cannot access medical notes and assertive personality is not a diagnosis?

Any chance you could have misheard or misunderstood? Or could she have looked at something recorded in a social care record?

nocoolnamesleft · 25/07/2023 21:22

Assertive personality is not a diagnosis. So this sounds very odd.

MichelleScarn · 25/07/2023 21:25

diagnosed with being assertive?
Your family as in you and your dc?

They can. To be honest though I thought it was just for my kids not me.

And no definitely not misheard/misunderstood.

She showed me the print out . It says my gp surgery and says xxx had a diagnosis of assertive personality disorder

Social workers can request health information from a GP in certain circumstances.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 25/07/2023 21:27

Are they a bit of a twat? Can you ask for a new one?

Assertive personality is not a diagnosis. So this sounds very odd.

A very basic google brings up histrionic personality disorder as an alternative name.

TheGoodBanana · 25/07/2023 21:29

Can you check your medical records on the nhs app? There is no such thing as Assertive Personality Disorder and if you had been diagnosed with something surely you would have been treated for it or at least know about it.

All sounds very strange.

Indigotree · 25/07/2023 21:29

Are GPs qualified to make such diagnoses?

nocoolnamesleft · 25/07/2023 21:30

DiscoDeborah · 25/07/2023 21:28

Assertive personality disorder is not in DSM IV or DSM V, or ICD 10.

Shouldichangename · 25/07/2023 21:30

Oops your all right is just says: affective personality disorder since 1995. I don't know why I got diagnosis in my head .

I'm not brilliant with English but I'd have thought assertive and histrionic were antonyms?!

The can ring gp and request any relevant information

DiscoDeborah · 25/07/2023 21:31

@nocoolnamesleft I'm aware of that. I was just sharing what came up when I searched.

My husband is an OT and with permission they can access records from their own systems, no need to involve the GP. It maybe a redacted record though.

Tickledtrout · 25/07/2023 21:36

AKA histrionic personality disorder. First thing I'd do is demand to see my full medical records. Is it an admin error or were you mentally unwell but not aware of a diagnosis? 'Personality disorders' are more often understood as shit life syndrome these days OP. Even if you were diagnosed with this as a teen you may have grown out of it by now. I'd be asking her what she thinks it means and what bearing she thinks it has on the issues today.
You can definitely contest the diagnosis today

Actually not their own system but one they have access to.

Porageeater · 25/07/2023 21:37

Not knowing your situation OP it’s difficult to say whether this is relevant to it. There will be situations where understanding someone’s medical history is relevant to what support they may currently need. At least she is being up front with you that she has seen this. It’s shit that no one told you before.

Sorry crossposted. Affective personality disorder is an umbrella term for conditions such as depression and bipolar. Again, if this isn't something you're aware of, you should really ask your GP for full records.

Social work aren't a paid for service - you can't get a new one.

HarridanHarvestingHeldaBeans · 25/07/2023 21:43

A HV gave every tiny bit if medical information about me she could access to a SW, after my surgery had told her they had nothing relevant to my parenting.

OP I would definitely be adking questions about this, especially since you didn't know about the diagnosis.

Jellyx · 25/07/2023 21:43

Ask your GP for your full records.

gogomoto · 25/07/2023 21:45

Your medical history is relevant as some condition are hereditary and techniques working with you as a family will differ depending on needs

I think I should not have used the word diagnosis. It said assertive personality disorder since 1995.

And yeah shit life syndrome would make sense and 100% stuff I have grown out of. And yes im gonna question it. Via the group email to make sure its seen by all because its really not relevant.
