This is the perhaps worst thing I've read. God almighty.

[Massive content warning for abuse and child death]

This story is appalling. Every part of it is worse than the previous part. This poor, poor girl. What a horrible short life and awful death she had. God almighty.

Poor wee Amber. I saw in one of the reports that she had been raped by another man 5 months earlier (who was convicted partly on her evidence). . Just hideous. And honestly that bloke who came along and found her body, is just sickening.

my 12 year old son asked me today why women need ‘safe spaces’. Obviously I have him an age appropriate answer, but this case just seems to highlight justhow many predatory men there are out there. Including, it seems her biological father.

FranticHare · 25/07/2023 20:24

Poor girl. Can’t help but think her brother must be pretty damaged. To do that he must have one hell of a back ground. I’m not trying to defend what he did - it’s indefensible - but it’s come from somewhere.

That they were both in foster care strongly implies both birth parents were hideous (not just the father). Whatever happened to them there I’m guessing set them on this terrible path. Poor kids. One dead, and one unlikely to turn his life around.

LardoBurrows · 25/07/2023 20:27

The three men who raped and molested her, I'd like to castrate them with a rusty knife then let them die slowly from gangrene. Their bodies would be burned and no trace of them would remain, no graves or anything marking their existence would be allowed.

AnnaNims · 25/07/2023 20:32

I read that article in increasing shock and disbelief. That poor girl.

the siblings were fostered from the age of three and five by Craig Niven and his wife Carol. The couple were granted permanent care of the siblings a few years later.

So why was 16 year old Amber in a childrens home and her brother in a homeless hostel if they were supposed to be in the care of Craig and Carol Niven?

I have also been wondering this too.

I was thinking that Connor may have been sexually assaulted by their father? Absolutely no excuse of course, but the terrible upbringing her might be an insight into why he became what he did (and I know lots of people are abused and would never repeat such behaviour obviously, but often there can be a pattern in a family as chaotic as this one).

Poor Amber, you read about her life and she never stood a chance did she? It's heartbreaking and I can't even begin to comprehend the fact that she wasn't even left in peace after death. It's horrifying.

Nicknacky · 25/07/2023 20:37

In time there will probably be a Fatal Accident Inquiry which will possibly answer many of these questions.

Nicknacky · 25/07/2023 20:38

Or a Serious Case Review. Not sure offhand which one it will fall under the remit of as it was a murder

WestwardHo1 · 25/07/2023 20:38

That poor child. Rest in peace, dear girl.

Just when you think men can't sink any lower, they do. Sex obsessed, depraved psychopaths.

And men wonder why we women are growing sick of them.

Backstreets · 25/07/2023 20:40

Monstrous fucking men.

RIP wee Amber, you deserved so much better than what life gave you.

FranticHare · 25/07/2023 20:41

@Vettrianofan Fostering (and adoption) can often break down. especially where there has been significant past trauma, and where teenage hormones are flowing. Equally, had she been allowed to live, Amber and her foster parents may well have formed a good positive long term relationship. We’ll never know.

What I mean is, there doesn’t need to be anything ‘wrong’ with the foster parents. I reckon both children were pretty traumatised, and would not have been easy to parent. Love doesn’t fix everything unfortunately.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 25/07/2023 20:44

Men just make me sick (yeah, I know, namalt and all that crap)

GoodOnPaper · 25/07/2023 19:49

I haven't seen the background in this situation but am aware that sadly foster placements often fail during the teenage years. Teens often end up homeless at 16-18.

When you think of the difficulties any parents with teenagers growing up face, kids sometimes dabbling in drugs/alcohol, peer pressure, hormones/anger etc. and add to that young people who are coming to terms with trauma they faced, emotions around their parents feelings towards them etc. you can only image how difficult situations can become and why placements can break down at this stage (As I say I have no idea what the situation was in this awful case).

RIP Amber - beautiful young lady - this should never happen to anyone

True

However, a good friend has long term fostered to age 18 3 separate children, so 3 positive outcomes at least.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 25/07/2023 20:46

Desperately sad. I am so sorry Amber had to go through any of it.

Abhannmor · 25/07/2023 21:03

RIP Amber 🙏

Mayhem3 · 25/07/2023 21:03

Wow what an awful case all round.

I’m sure there were lots of signs which means this could have been avoided but there wasn’t the help available to stop it.

Poor girl.
May she finally be able to rest in peace now.

Without sounding awful what would sexual assault be?

FeetupTvon · 25/07/2023 21:05

May you finally rest in peace beautiful Amber.
I’m so sorry your life had been so heartbreaking.

An utterly shocking read.
Poor, poor girl deserved so much more.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/07/2023 21:05

I don't even have words.

Fucking men.

Bobsledgirl · 25/07/2023 21:06

Not excusing her brother but there is some long standing family trauma there that has had devastating impact. Poor girl.

Sugarfree23 · 25/07/2023 21:07

Heartbreaking.
Amber, you're in a better place - RIP

coxesorangepippin · 25/07/2023 21:10

Yes, why am I not surprised??

Men, again.

Awful, awful story. Assuming their foster care went well, it shows how a damaged early life impacts - they were only 3 and 5 when they went to foster parents.

Poor Amber, that smiley face, RIP.

I find this interesting too. They were so little. It's a terrible shame that whatever was done when they were 3 and 5 to try and save them was not enough in the brother's case.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/07/2023 21:19

I've worked with teenagers who have had a terrible time as toddlers and then gone into the care system, and been in very good family homes. However the early damage has still affected them years later, maybe just in "small" ways rather than any antisocial behaviour, such as having food issues if they'd been neglected and starved. And they've probably not even been aware they've been doing it, it's just learned behaviour from a very early coping mechanism and it's somehow stayed with them.

Foster carers who take on children where there has been trauma are absolute angels in my eyes.

Sugarfree23 · 25/07/2023 21:21

The foster Dad said they couldn't be left alone together. That tells you lots.
It wouldn't surprise me if the brother is the reason she moved out.
