Holiday makers at it in hot tub...

We have a couple of converted barns as holiday rentals. Before anyone starts, no we can't get residential permission on them and no we don't make much money at all especially now the business electricity is so high (and no we don't get help for that). Anyway, they have good sized gardens and are not too far from the sea so attract families with small children this time of year. They also have hot tubs. Last night was the first warm and sunny evening since last check in and guests in one cottage (two adults) were having sex very loudly in their hot tub at 9pm (along with loud music). I'm not sure if they thought they couldn't be heard because a hot tub is pretty loud if you are in it. Or maybe they just don't care but hot tub noise is NOT loud to surrounding gardens, fields and houses and we can quite often hear people's slightly raised conversations in them. There are not many buildings or traffic noises around to drown out noises. I shuffled our kids off to bed pretty sharpish. The guests know we live on site when they book and have heard our neighbours kids during the day because their garden is almost next to theirs and also sound travels really, really well here. Anyway this has given us the ick big time. They are here until the weekend. I want to say something to them so it doesn't put off other guests. OH does not think we should (he also wants to get rid of all hot tubs asap!) and has dragged himself to work as per usual so it's just me and the kids. WWYD?

Perhaps leave a leaflet in your lets offering handy extras ... Cranberry juice, paracetamol, etc..

orangegato · 25/07/2023 12:17

Hot tubs are just rank and chavvy, end of.

Might be the law for scummy chavs

Ha ha, I think you hit the nail on the head there @mydogisthebest. We had a hot tub at home, no one had sex in it, no one used it outside of the household, we just drank (good) wine or gin and chilled in privacy - like normal people really.

NettleTea · 25/07/2023 12:20

we were encouraged by our management company to get a hot tub for our holiday cottage (similar scenario regarding residential permissions here too) but opted to allow dogs instead.
I bloody hate them

NettleTea · 25/07/2023 12:20

hot tubs. not dogs btw

breakfastofchampions · 25/07/2023 12:24

Yes but given the other noise I didn’t feel I could knock on their gate and ask at the time…

They don't call them sex ponds for nothing - and this is why I will never ever go in one at a holiday let. Or anywhere, in fact. 🤮

Likewise 🤢

Beachside82 · 25/07/2023 12:25

Presumably you have had to confront guests about behaviour before? Just see it like that.

We are aware that the hot tub wasn’t used for its intended use last night and would ask that it doesn’t happen again. Thanks

as an aside - so British you have to preempt odd posters from criticising you for running a small business rather than doing what they think you should do with the properties

Beachside82 · 25/07/2023 12:26

Is your OH generally a bit uptight about sex?!

Desperatenow1 · 25/07/2023 12:27

StellaJohanna · 25/07/2023 11:35

Get rid of the hot tubs. They attract trash. Try and attract better customers. Think of the sort of people who wouldn't want a hot tub and the reasons why not, and go from there.

My thoughts exactly

AsterixAndPersimmon · 25/07/2023 11:55

You’re not going to stop them having sex in the hot tub. And yes others will have done that before. Just like they will have had sex in bed, lounge, bathroom etc…

You can’t stop people having sex.

However, I suspect they have no idea of how much noise travels where you are - for the very reasons you’ve described in your OP.
Remind them of that and the fact there are children living next door.

Even in hotels, you can often hear "sex noise" from the rooms next door. Sometimes it's "vocal", sometimes it's the bedhead banging against the dividing wall, sometimes it the floor boards creaking from the bed movement.

Would you expect the hotel owners to tell their guests to refrain from sex?

The OP just needs to improve the soundproofing by better fencing/hedges/planting etc.

lol I was just going to ask! We allow both. People with dogs are better behaved than those with kids and they don’t seem to drink as much either!

It won't have been the first time your hot tub has been used for this and it definitely won't be the last. There is nothing that you can really do other than get rid of them.

I've heard too many horror stories on holiday let owners forums of how rarely some owners clean and change the water (it should be done at every changeover and the water tested for chemical levels twice a day) to ever go in one myself. We don't supply one

SirChenjins · 25/07/2023 12:30

What type of hotels are you going to where you can often hear headboard banging sex?! You need to stop going to the ones where you rent by the hour Wink I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve heard people having sex in the hotels I’ve stayed at Confused

Gettingbysomehow · 25/07/2023 12:30

That's disgusting they are pigs. Never have them back. Yuck.

Who decided that a hot tub isn't to be used for sex? Who writes these rules? Did the OP make potential guests aware of the rule? Did they agree when they booked? You can't just make up rules and apply them retrospectively.

In reality, it's pretty obvious that hot tubs are used for sex - that's why they're called sex ponds.

If the OP doesn't want their guests to use them for sex, then they need to get rid of them and bear the loss of income from future bookings. If they're that bothered, then they'll put up with the loss of income.

Sorry confused.

Hot tubs for dogs? Or hot dogs? Or hot dogs in hot tubs? Or hot tubby people dogging?

Pretty sure the op hasn’t written a note to saying

please don’t defected, vomit or pour beer in to the hot tub, but I think you’d agree she’d be right to ask them to refrain in future if she became aware of this taking place.

or are you of the view that unless a rule is written down, then it’s a free for all

and I’ve never heard sex pond before 😂

Normal hotels, i.e. holiday hotels in the Med, country house hotels in the UK.

Certainly not "by the hour" type of hotels!

We've stayed in a lot of hotels over the years, probably well into the hundreds, so by simply being a numbers game, we've heard quite a lot!

Worst was a golf resort hotel in an Algarve resort - every sodding night the head board was banging, usually around 2 or 3 in the morning, waking us up, and usually again in the afternoon. We kept banging on the wall but they never stopped! Must have been a honeymoon I suppose. At least they were pretty quick (poor girl!)

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 25/07/2023 12:37

The sex isn't the issue, it happens everywhere(fancy hotels,by the hour hotels, various rooms, outside, indoors, park benches, pools etc). The noise however is, so you can and should mention that. And put a sign in the future if you do use them.

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/07/2023 12:39

Spottydressinggowngirl · 25/07/2023 10:39

Grim!! I actively avoid booking places with hot tubs for exactly this reason. Dirty sex ponds 🤢

just real them you’ve had a noise complaint and ask them to be mindful of other guests. And maybe hand them some bleach?

We just don't use the hot tubs if they happen to be at places we rent. You can't catch sexponditis if you don't actually get in one...

Beachside82 · 25/07/2023 12:40

I actively look for air bnbs for hot tubs!! 😂

and I’m a single parent with two children

you need to go to places with better sound proofing!

I used to travel a lot on business and stayed in major chain hotels - Doubletree, Marriot, Hyatt etc.
Trust me, there was a lot of sex noise from adjoining rooms, unless it was hot enough to need the air con, which drowned most of it out.

Anyway, OP, I think I would ignore this one time, but if you hear anything again, then let them know that sound travels, and possibly put a notice to that effect by the hot tubs for future users. I agree with pp, people on holiday are going to have sex, you are going to continue to sanitise the property, all is good.

LizzieBananas · 25/07/2023 12:43

Are you sure it’s not foxes? Wink
