Holiday makers at it in hot tub...

We have a couple of converted barns as holiday rentals. Before anyone starts, no we can't get residential permission on them and no we don't make much money at all especially now the business electricity is so high (and no we don't get help for that). Anyway, they have good sized gardens and are not too far from the sea so attract families with small children this time of year. They also have hot tubs. Last night was the first warm and sunny evening since last check in and guests in one cottage (two adults) were having sex very loudly in their hot tub at 9pm (along with loud music). I'm not sure if they thought they couldn't be heard because a hot tub is pretty loud if you are in it. Or maybe they just don't care but hot tub noise is NOT loud to surrounding gardens, fields and houses and we can quite often hear people's slightly raised conversations in them. There are not many buildings or traffic noises around to drown out noises. I shuffled our kids off to bed pretty sharpish. The guests know we live on site when they book and have heard our neighbours kids during the day because their garden is almost next to theirs and also sound travels really, really well here. Anyway this has given us the ick big time. They are here until the weekend. I want to say something to them so it doesn't put off other guests. OH does not think we should (he also wants to get rid of all hot tubs asap!) and has dragged himself to work as per usual so it's just me and the kids. WWYD?

I was on holiday recently and got up one morning to a couple having sex on a sun lounger. Lovely. Felt bad for the people that ended up taking that sun lounger later 🤮

Nobody has a problem with sex. It's loud inconsiderate sex nobody wants.

Sometimes, loud inconsiderate sex is exactly what I want.

I'd put a notice on their hot tub 'Decommissioned for cleaning'. If they complain, let them know why you're having to empty it. I'm not averse to hot tubs but your guests are grim.

Excellent Idea!

Empty it - leave it like that for the duration of their stay!

AssertiveGertrude · 25/07/2023 11:50

I’d say nothing but I’d get rid of them

RudsyFarmer · 25/07/2023 11:51

I think you’re going to have to put a notice up asking for ‘no body fluids in the hot tub please’.

breakfastofchampions · 25/07/2023 11:53

lol the responses have made me chuckle. OH starts work really early so goes to bed early but the noise...anyway.
We scrub literally everything between guests. We sometimes have to touch up paint as well. We get more winter bookings because of the hot tubs so during the season when we don't make as much money we would struggle financially. But they are grim. TBH people do some weird things on holiday altogether and if I had the time I would write a book about it.
We top up the chemicals during their stay (every day) but wait til they go out. We don't usually interact with guests unless they want a chat and we are separate enough that they usually send us a message if they want us for something. The older people usually want to chat and if they are at it in the hot tub are nice and quiet about it!

It’s law to have sex in a hot tub when on holiday.

Don’t be shocked but many have probably had sex all over the place, including the kitchen counters and dining table if you have one!

Might be the law for scummy chavs

AsterixAndPersimmon · 25/07/2023 11:55

You’re not going to stop them having sex in the hot tub. And yes others will have done that before. Just like they will have had sex in bed, lounge, bathroom etc…

You can’t stop people having sex.

However, I suspect they have no idea of how much noise travels where you are - for the very reasons you’ve described in your OP.
Remind them of that and the fact there are children living next door.

Gcsunnyside23 · 25/07/2023 11:56

It's definitely happened before but it's happening in the rooms to so if it's helping your income I'd pretend it's not happening 😂. Why not have a quiet word along the lines of another guest or your neighbours complained about some noise last night and you would really appreciate it if they could keep it down. Nice and tactful and avoid any negative reviews

WandaWonder · 25/07/2023 11:57

I'm with your husband, hot tubs are warm petrie dishes

viques · 25/07/2023 11:57

I would drop off a big bottle of bleach and say you will be back later to drain the hot tub and get rid of their body fluids.

GoodChat · 25/07/2023 11:57

Your wants dont trump everyone's desires to live their lives without hearing others having sex.

Please tell us! 😂

Viviennemary · 25/07/2023 11:58

Its not how I would behave. But up to them.

Badbadbunny · 25/07/2023 11:59

You're VERY naive to think that your guests wouldn't be having sex in the hot tub! They're known as sex ponds for a reason! I'd never put a toe in one let alone get into one (unless it was my own). I think they're pretty gross really.

You either need to get rid of them, or you need to accept that your guests will be screwing in them. You can't tell them not to, as that's akin to telling them not to screw in the beds!

As for noise, how about putting up a sign next to the hot tub saying something like "please be respectful to neighbours as sound travels". Or put up better fencing/planting etc around them to absorb the sound.

Last year we went to a barn conversion (3 in a long row) where each had hot tubs, separated by just two thin wattle fencing panels, so basically just the 10 feet of fencing to separate the patios/hot tubs, all opening up into a big field. When the kids played in the field, you could look back and have an unobstructed view of all 3 patios/hot tubs, so basically no privacy at all. It was all very noisy, you could hear all the voices/laughter and splashes from the patios/hot tubs each side, till late at night. The owners had made no attempt at all to do anything to deaden the noise or provide any privacy - very lazy on their part. We stopped our son from going on the field in the evenings as we really didn't want him to see what the neighbours were doing.

How hard can it be to put up some proper division, i.e. fences or hedges all around each patio boundary, plus some large pot plants etc to absorb the noise? I really hate these holiday home patios where there's no privacy and the owners have made minimal effort!

AsterixAndPersimmon · 25/07/2023 12:00

I’m always Grin at people who are so shocked that other people have sex too.
im mean I’m pretty sure all the MNters saying 🤮🤮 have had sex whilst on hols! What do people think it’s disgusting is a puzzle for me.

Same with swimming pools (yes people wee in them) etc….

Cucucucu · 25/07/2023 12:01

Message them to say you had complaints ( put the time ) from other guests so would appreciate it if they kept noise to a minimum .

breakfastofchampions · 25/07/2023 12:02

Badbadbunny ours are completely separate and have fencing and plants and there are trees too. You can't see them in their tubs. However there are no buildings or road noise. I think we have one airplane go overhead once per month...so no real background noise at all!

Inkpotlover · 25/07/2023 12:04

They don't call them sex ponds for nothing - and this is why I will never ever go in one at a holiday let. Or anywhere, in fact. 🤮

Wibbleswombats · 25/07/2023 12:04

Back in the dark ages my friend at school came in one day and told me all about the B & B guests having loud sex in the shower the previous night. It was a large farmhouse but not that large...

The kids will know!

You need signage 😃

The sex might not bother me, but the music definitely would. I don't go on holiday to listen to someone else's shit music.
Surely as the holiday let owner, you should be asking anyone being noisy to keep it down for the enjoyment of other guests.

Fuckitydoodah · 25/07/2023 12:13

I can't see what there is to be achieved by saying anything. It would be mortifying for them. I bet they'd had a few drinks and didn't realise they could be heard.

It's happened now. Apart from being loud, they haven't actually done anything wrong. You'll change the water and clean it out before the next guests, so no issue there.

They won't be the first or the last to have had sex in your hot tubs.
