Holiday makers at it in hot tub...

We have a couple of converted barns as holiday rentals. Before anyone starts, no we can't get residential permission on them and no we don't make much money at all especially now the business electricity is so high (and no we don't get help for that). Anyway, they have good sized gardens and are not too far from the sea so attract families with small children this time of year. They also have hot tubs. Last night was the first warm and sunny evening since last check in and guests in one cottage (two adults) were having sex very loudly in their hot tub at 9pm (along with loud music). I'm not sure if they thought they couldn't be heard because a hot tub is pretty loud if you are in it. Or maybe they just don't care but hot tub noise is NOT loud to surrounding gardens, fields and houses and we can quite often hear people's slightly raised conversations in them. There are not many buildings or traffic noises around to drown out noises. I shuffled our kids off to bed pretty sharpish. The guests know we live on site when they book and have heard our neighbours kids during the day because their garden is almost next to theirs and also sound travels really, really well here. Anyway this has given us the ick big time. They are here until the weekend. I want to say something to them so it doesn't put off other guests. OH does not think we should (he also wants to get rid of all hot tubs asap!) and has dragged himself to work as per usual so it's just me and the kids. WWYD?

Dear god, are all the people going 'sex is normal, you prudes, do you know they also do it in the beds??' like it's a brilliant gotcha REALLY incapable of understanding the difference between sex that other people (including children) are forced to listen to and sex that takes place in private? And why one might not be ok and the other fine??

FannythePinkFlamingo · 28/07/2023 07:59

I work in holiday lettings and those of you saying they are dirty sex ponds should be aware that for health and safety reasons, the water must be changed between guests. If it's not, then the holiday let is being negligent in their obligations.

However, noisy sex in a hot tub is pretty grim! Probably too late for these guests OP, bit maybe some noise curfew signage going forwards might deter any future hot tub sex?

Relentlessbollox · 28/07/2023 08:00

Hot tubs should be emptied, cleaned and refilled between each guest.
A good look at the filters will confirm if this has been done or not so I’m not sure why people make such a big deal of them.

There is likely to be much more “ick” in your holiday hotel pool.

Do you rip out your baths and showers and replace when you move house?

puffyisgood · 28/07/2023 08:02

I briefly had a hot tub, was probably mistakenly really fastidious about taking the filter out, big mistake, it collects a lot of hair and skin. I wouldn't ever want one again.

And this is why I don't go in hot tubs

Yup, grim sex ponds, bleurgh.

ChesterAndRaoul · 28/07/2023 08:26

The comments on this thread 😂

Hot tubs attract trash, get rid of them and you'll attract a higher class of customer....

Behave! Does anyone actually think that upper class people don't go in hot tubs, or have sex in hot tubs, or enjoy loud inappropriate sex on occasion??
Do they stay in the bed and remain completely silent? They definitely don't!

This is just another chance for the judgemental bunch to turn their nose up at people the deem lower than themselves.

In regards to the OP, tell them you've had a noise complaint, don't mention or imply you've heard them having sex, and ask them to be more considerate after certain hours. Put a note in your handbook that clearly states that noise travels and that you ask that guests be considerate of other guests when outside in the evening.

Come to terms with the fact that guests will have sex all over your property, and clean it thoroughly between guests.

BigGlenda · 28/07/2023 08:43

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 this is why you will never get me near a hot tub

CatchMeQuick · 28/07/2023 08:48

I love a good hot tub. We only go on holiday in the UK where we have one in case the weather is shit! You can still sit in a hot tub in the rain.

Every one we've been to has a sign above the hot tub stating that the sound travels and time limit on when they can be used (usually after 10am in the morning and not after 10pm at night).

Exactly this. Grown adults are perfectly capable of understanding that sounds travel and no-one wants to hear them having sex (no-one decent that is) and in particular, no-one wants their children to hear strangers having loud sex outside. People have sex, that’s not the issue here - it’s the fact they were shagging loudly outside knowing there were families in the vicinity. Perhaps that’s their kink though - who knows 🤢

Titchyfeep · 28/07/2023 09:08

I feel like a vital piece of information is missing, can you also see them? Makes a big difference. If it’s just noise I wouldn’t say anything.

marblesthecat · 28/07/2023 09:11

So your neighbours have to put up with noise from your business venture? As someone who had months of hell living next door to an air bnb this stuff really riles me up.

If i'm checking out of a property at 10/11 am and new guests are arriving 3ish ... there's no way a hot tub is going to be drained, cleaned, refilled and heated in time.

^ Actually we do every single time..
I am waiting for 10am and as my lovely holiday guests head off, l go straight to the garden,
Drain the wood fired hot tub (30 minutes) into the hedges, whilst it is draining l refill logs, firelighters and matches and clean the table, chairs and lid. Check the uv, and filter pump.
My cleaner and l spray the hot tub, wash a side each, rinse several times, vac out the last bit of water ..(30 minutes)
Start refilling at 11am.
Full by 12.
Fire lit at 12, topped up every 30 minutes until guests arrive at 4pm.

Guests get a bottle of champagne to enjoy in a clean hot tub..

Meanwhile in between fire top ups, l am up and down to the laundry for the 6 loads of washing, putting in and out of the tumbled drier, and ironing.

Sumultaneously my father is cutting the 1/3 acre guest garden, and my cleaner is cleaning non stop for 5 hours. On the dot of 3pm l help her with making and re -ironing the bedding in situ and doing a final check.

It has to be planned with military precision, and l am always surprised people don't realise the hard slog to get an entire home, garden, hot tub, parking area, drive into show home condition every single booking!

This is why it is selfish to not check out on time.

We take great pride in never cutting corners and have great cleanliness reviews, but it is very hard work.

I don't mind if my guests have sex in the hot tubs, as they are away from anyone else. In fact l want them to have a fantastic time !

SirChenjins · 28/07/2023 09:48

As this is MN every hot tub in holidays homes will be scrubbed clean and free of all unwanted bacteria and body fluids/waste products in between guests. In the real world, not so much.

I agree many holiday homes are poorly managed, but it is actually fairly easy to see how clean a hot tub is if no chlorine is being used (such as ours) as the water would be grey/green within a few days with just a uv and carbon filter.

If guests do not want the hot tub on the first night we do not fill it until they request it, then so they can see a clean empty tub. luckily ours are in a rural setting surrounded by open fields so it is easy for us to to access withuot being seen by the guests so they retain their privacy. (100m away)

SirChenjins · 28/07/2023 10:12

I’m sure it would be. The joys of chlorine.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 28/07/2023 10:29

Send them a bill for cleaning the hot tub and put it in your T&Cs

The hot tub should be cleaned between guests whether or not they've been shagging in it!

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 28/07/2023 11:27

@Badbadbunny I am aware of that, thank you. @breakfastofchampions asked for a way of letting the guests know that it was unacceptable behaviour in a non confrontational manner.

breakfastofchampions · 28/07/2023 13:07

Haha I’m sure. ours do not mind for sure.

Well I just spent a trip away for couples only , every accommodation had a private outdoor space with a hot tub - yes I had sex in it ! Sorry not sorry , lighten up people

But noisily or not noisily is the relevant question here! Not the sex itself, but whether it was audible to other people.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 28/07/2023 19:13

@Melmimi28 was it sweeney woods you went to??!

Melmimi28 · 28/07/2023 19:43

@VeggieStraws not noisy ! I was more replying the many people saying it’s grim each to their own the place we went I’m sure that’s what they expect people are going to do ! They were throughly cleaned and without being too graphic …. It’s not like my husband let it all go in the tub water 🤣 I think there are plenty worse hygiene places people come across in every day life !
If you run a holiday cottage with a hot tub I’m sure really they should expect some people will do this !

Melmimi28 · 28/07/2023 19:44

@Justontherightsideofnormal Why could you hear me ? 😃 no not there I don’t live in the U.K. I was on a beautiful North American lake :)

Haha, no I just recently stayed at an adult only high class place with a hot tub and had a sneaky suspicion it was the same place (ps I did not have sex in the hot tub ...... too many sheep spectating for my liking ) 😂
