Holiday makers at it in hot tub...

We have a couple of converted barns as holiday rentals. Before anyone starts, no we can't get residential permission on them and no we don't make much money at all especially now the business electricity is so high (and no we don't get help for that). Anyway, they have good sized gardens and are not too far from the sea so attract families with small children this time of year. They also have hot tubs. Last night was the first warm and sunny evening since last check in and guests in one cottage (two adults) were having sex very loudly in their hot tub at 9pm (along with loud music). I'm not sure if they thought they couldn't be heard because a hot tub is pretty loud if you are in it. Or maybe they just don't care but hot tub noise is NOT loud to surrounding gardens, fields and houses and we can quite often hear people's slightly raised conversations in them. There are not many buildings or traffic noises around to drown out noises. I shuffled our kids off to bed pretty sharpish. The guests know we live on site when they book and have heard our neighbours kids during the day because their garden is almost next to theirs and also sound travels really, really well here. Anyway this has given us the ick big time. They are here until the weekend. I want to say something to them so it doesn't put off other guests. OH does not think we should (he also wants to get rid of all hot tubs asap!) and has dragged himself to work as per usual so it's just me and the kids. WWYD?

People shagging loudly does attract ire regardless of location. People shagging quietly, don't necessarily attract as much attention, which doesn't mean it doesn't happen, even in public swimming pools.

This isn't about shagging quietly, though, is it. Although anyone shagging in a public pool, quietly or otherwise, with other people and children about them would get noticed in the main, and would find themselves in court and all over the media. If anyone is tempted, probably best not.

IncreasinglyGrumpy · 27/07/2023 19:44

A 'guys don't know if you realise but sound travels and we and the neighbours hear everything and I mean everything'. Not everyone uses hot tubs for that but some will - I actually like one because I'm decrepit and it helps with joints !

Anderson2018 · 27/07/2023 22:29

Omg why is everyone so shocked at that haha! Your hot tub has had a lot more sexual activity than you will ever know 🤣 if a couple are on holiday who are either a new couple or have left kids at home, they are shagging all over that holiday home I’m afraid! Don’t say something to them, everyone has stayed in a hotel and heard people at it, it’s the same thing, it happens, who cares. You’ve not had any noice complaints so get over it.

Winterscomingagain · 27/07/2023 23:20

I peed blood for 3 days after using a hot tub so would actively seek out a holiday let with no hot tub. In my area the hot tubs have to be regularly tested by environmental health and apparently they're routinely showing up all sorts of nasty bugs.

Arrrgh am I the only person who thought the water would be changed after each set of visitors?

😂

Get rid of the hot tubs. They attract trash. Try and attract better customers. Think of the sort of people who wouldn't want a hot tub and the reasons why not, and go from there.

I would love to have a hot tub and I am certainly not trash. A hot tub can be very beneficial to someone who suffers with medical conditions including chronic pain. For me, a hot tub can be the difference between enjoying a holiday and spending the holiday in a wheelchair. Also families with kids enjoy using a hot tub on holiday. I think that your comment is a little judgmental.

Divorcednursemummy · 27/07/2023 23:49

Guess they’ll have to make the same notice for the beds??? Ffs adults in relationships have sex. Sometimes it’s loud, at least they’ll leave a good review 🤣

Luckyduc · 27/07/2023 23:58

I stayed in a log cabin with a hot tub and there were rules printed next to it and no sex in the hot tub was one of them. It even went on to explain why and how the owners would have to drain the hot tub a deep clean and refill for next guests and for that reason test the waters before returning deposit.

savunami · 28/07/2023 00:42

you sound so unnapreciative of your OH

Davy009 · 28/07/2023 00:45

could try the passive aggressive sarcastic option, leave a note saying "if you are having sex in the hot tub, could you try and be a bit louder as my husband was having trouble hearing you clearly while he was masturbating"

Chocolatesandroses · 28/07/2023 01:01

Reading this has given me the biggest Ick . I would defiantly say something to them if they can have loud sex so people can hear they can defiantly be told about it . However if you’re not feeling to do it you could just say make sure no noise after a certain time as noise travels even with the hot tub on .

Salome61 · 28/07/2023 01:02

Oh no, so sorry to read this, it really is the luck of the draw with guests.

I was house hunting in Kent a few years ago, and stayed in an Airbnb attached to the back of a house. There was another guest unit at the end of the garden.

Next morning the owner knocked and apologised 'for the noise during the night', and said the guests would be leaving at lunch time. I'd not heard anything but apparently the young couple staying in the unit at the end of the garden had forgotten the 'gate' code, woken him and his (staff nurse) wife up at 2 am, and then needed help getting down the path. As he helped the wife into the hallway, she apparently pee'd herself and fell backwards. I couldn't believe it when the owner asked if I'd like to watch the CCTV!

Dibbydoos · 28/07/2023 05:16

They're on holiday and had sex in the hot tub - that's minging, but it's up to them.

I'm with your DH, get rid of the hot tubs, they're too expensive to run and everyone shares the same water - yuk.

What is as good though, imo, is a spa bath and noone is sharing dirty water :) So, if you still want to offer a little luxury, you could switch the baths to spa baths.

No one objects to people having sex. We all know adults enjoy having sex. However, having loud sex so others can hear is just antisocial and really yucky. Having loud sex so children can hear takes it to the level of creepy

Blossomed · 28/07/2023 06:35

I know a lot of people have said that hot tubs are gross, but my families holiday let wouldn’t get half as many bookings without one, so I’d be hesitant to do away with them. Also, I imagine they get emptied and cleaned after every set of guests (as my family do with theirs), so hopefully not the ‘ponds’ people have described. I liked the suggestion of a notice about how well sound travels in your welcome info OP.

It even went on to explain why and how the owners would have to drain the hot tub a deep clean and refill for next guests and for that reason test the waters before returning deposit.

I’ve worked in leisure for twenty years and I’ve been a qualified pool plant and spa operator for almost that entire time.

I can tell you with certainty that you cannot tell if someone has had sex in a pool or hot tub with any test that will be available to holiday let owners.

If a hot tub is tested and treated every day, has its filters cleaned regularly, and is backwashed according to manufacturers instructions then there is absolutely no need to empty and “deep clean” hot tubs because someone had sex in them.

There are good reasons why you wouldn’t want to have sex in a hot tub (the warm water and ph levels aren’t actually good for a woman’s vaginal health, and I suspect technically semen would make the filters grubbier) but those things really don’t matter if you’re on top of the hot tub maintenance.

I would like to see it made a requirement that all holiday let hot tubs are maintained by someone who is a qualified spa plant operator though.

NeonSoda · 28/07/2023 06:50

In addition - emptying, “deep cleaning”, and refilling hot tubs after every guest is really rather environmentally damaging.

All you need to do is backwash the hot tub while dumping a percentage of the water as waste, then top up, test the water, and rebalance the chemicals.

Perhaps then we’d also have less of a pool chemical shortage and our swimming pools would be able to operate with better financial margins…

AhDad · 28/07/2023 06:58

The issue isn’t that they had sex in the hot tub, it’s that they was loud and inconsiderate. Explain re. Noise levels and have clear rules on display in their surrounds that they risk their break away if they breach the rules.

I don’t know why people are so shocked, these people are on holiday, enjoying themselves, hot tub sex is great, if they’re cleaned regularly (should be daily) then it’s no more disgusting than sleeping in a travelodge bed.

Don’t be such prudes and OP ask them to keep the noise down and be respectful of others.

Reggieismycat · 28/07/2023 07:03

I wouldnt say anything but when they leave I would get rid of the hot tubs. They are very expensive to run and Im sure people will still rent your holiday homes. The only one I have been in is in my sisters garden it was lovely but I had a glass of cidar and when I got out it was like I had 10. Hick!

rookiemere · 28/07/2023 07:17

I enjoy having a hot tub on holiday and I've never had sex in one. I'm sure the vast majority of users just enjoy the sensation of sitting in the warm water and looking at the stars or reading a book.

I find it hard to relax - thanks menopause- and a hot tub is one of the few places I can truly unwind and we pay a premium for properties that have one.

The issue is the noisy night time outdoor sex, not the hot tub.

And this is why I don't go in hot tubs

Swimming pools are as bad if not worse. People go 9n them without having bathed or showered first and wash off all kinds of bodily excretions in the pools. A nurse reported elderly, disabled and very obese patients who can no longer manage to keep themselves clean when going to the toilet saying they rely on the swimming pool to keep them clean. I haven't been since.

Finally, some sensible, practical knowledge.

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 28/07/2023 07:38

ughh this is disgusting - you need to go there this morning and switch the thing off, empty it and decontaminate the whole thing. Make a big song and dance over it. Then charge them for the refill & reheat & additional chemicals.

We put notices up about this so they know to expect a recharge.

How are the chemicals in the tub managed during a stay?

If definitely let them know they ha e been heard. I'd also add a few signs / notices about noise....

Yeah, no heavy petting in the hot tub sign🤣
