Holiday makers at it in hot tub...

We have a couple of converted barns as holiday rentals. Before anyone starts, no we can't get residential permission on them and no we don't make much money at all especially now the business electricity is so high (and no we don't get help for that). Anyway, they have good sized gardens and are not too far from the sea so attract families with small children this time of year. They also have hot tubs. Last night was the first warm and sunny evening since last check in and guests in one cottage (two adults) were having sex very loudly in their hot tub at 9pm (along with loud music). I'm not sure if they thought they couldn't be heard because a hot tub is pretty loud if you are in it. Or maybe they just don't care but hot tub noise is NOT loud to surrounding gardens, fields and houses and we can quite often hear people's slightly raised conversations in them. There are not many buildings or traffic noises around to drown out noises. I shuffled our kids off to bed pretty sharpish. The guests know we live on site when they book and have heard our neighbours kids during the day because their garden is almost next to theirs and also sound travels really, really well here. Anyway this has given us the ick big time. They are here until the weekend. I want to say something to them so it doesn't put off other guests. OH does not think we should (he also wants to get rid of all hot tubs asap!) and has dragged himself to work as per usual so it's just me and the kids. WWYD?

Grim but seriously, I wouldn’t say anything. They’re on holiday, are guests and have paid for the facilities. Do what you want with your business afterwards.

What about the other paying guests who might have heard? Antisocial behaviour - so loud music and noisy sex outside - might impinge on other customers' experience. It's not only this couple who have paid for a holiday - and being on holiday doesn't exempt you from all need to be considerate of others.

spongebunnyfatpants · 26/07/2023 18:52

We stayed some where with a hot tub once and it cleanly stated in the booking policy that no sexual activity was to happen in the hot tub.
Maybe you need to put that into yours too. 😉

Hot tubs in holiday lets are emptied, cleaned and refilled between guests. The only person it can be unpleasant for is the person responsible for cleaning it.

It's unpleasant for the people listening, not just the person cleaning. OP's post was about noise rather than hygiene. The hot tub doesn't matter so much as that they were having loud sex outdoors.

Harls1969 · 26/07/2023 19:05

I thought people only had loud sex in films (apart from 'Ow, not that one!' or 'Hurry up, my knees are killing me!'). I reckon they knew they could be heard and that added to the enjoyment. But yeah, get rid of the hot tubs

Zoejj77 · 26/07/2023 19:05

Surely you drain and clean between guests groups anyway on the tubs

BadNomad · 26/07/2023 19:39

Ewww I bet they have sex on the bedding too. Dirty bastards.

VeggieStraws · 26/07/2023 19:47

She really clearly says in the opening post that it's about the noise?? Not the hot tub per se - but the volume of it outdoors? Why are people saying anything about bedding or cleaning?

Because if they cared about noise they wouldn't have installed hot tubs in the first place.

Ohgollymolly · 26/07/2023 19:59

That’s grim. I’d totally email them and invoice them for replacement of the water in the tub, cleaning off it and then the cost of heating the water again. Yuk.

Dancingonthemoonlight · 26/07/2023 20:02

I was happy sitting in my blissful ignorance of what goes on in hot tubs and now I'm put off ever wanting to go in one for life 🤢

FireflyJar · 26/07/2023 20:07

Hot tub = Sex pond

It's not the noise of the hot tub; it's the guests having loud sex in it though. Theyre outside, in a place where other people are staying, and having noisy sex outside. The presence of a hot tub doesn't mean people have to have sex that other people can hear. Lots of holiday lets have hot tubs pretty close to where other people are, surely if that's the case you just wouldn't have noisy sex in it??

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 26/07/2023 20:20

Sounds like a recipe for thrush 🤮

It's well-known that people have sex in hot tubs. It's well-known that people have drinking sessions in hot tubs. So, again, if she cared about noise, from sex or drunkeness or anything else, she shouldn't have installed hot tubs. People are on holiday. They're outside. If people don't like the noise, they can move inside.

Pineapple35 · 26/07/2023 20:24

Yes this 😂
They are on holiday and that’s what the majority of people do while away with their partner.
Some very prudish people here

VeggieStraws · 26/07/2023 20:29

But just being on holiday doesn't mean having sex other holidaymakers can hear, does it @BadNomad ? Or the owner's children? The idea that you can do whatever you like regardless of anyone else is a bit off. It's just a holiday, not the Purge!

I doubt they were thinking about the other holidaymakers or the owner's children while they were enjoying themselves in the sex pond.

VeggieStraws · 26/07/2023 20:38

But unless you're in the middle of nowhere, you know other people are in hearing distance so you keep the noise down don't you? Maybe the setup of the OP's holiday place is deceptive, but if they don't know they can be heard it's all the more reason to tell them.

BadNomad · 26/07/2023 20:42

It's like going camping or caravaning - you're going to be disturbed by other people's noise. If you don't like noise, don't holiday in places where people will be outside making noise.

VeggieStraws · 26/07/2023 20:45

I think sex noise is in a different category. I think if I booked to stay in one of two barns with hot tubs and could hear people having loud sex in the adjoining one in the evening, I wouldn't like it at all. I'd expect to hear them talking, but what the OP is describing - no.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 26/07/2023 20:52

Oh god this reminds me of a sports holiday I had booked for a large group a few years ago. I will not go into details as it is very outing.
I booked accommodation for 30 people, 3 cottages out of a group of 6 with shared sauna/steam room/massive hot tub (the other 3 properties also had access to this)
one evening whilst everyone sitting eating tea there was a few sniggers/whispers and it came out that one randy couple (in our group) had shagged in the communal hot tub. I was absolutely spitting feathers, beyond angry that two adults would do this?! Complete disregard for others using the hot tub. They honestly didn't see this issue!

BadNomad · 26/07/2023 20:53

Then don't book to stay somewhere with hot tubs. Seriously. It's what happens. Most people know this.

I've stayed in places with hot tubs fairly often and never overheard anyone having sex in them. So maybe most people do it more quietly if theyre doing it? I think most people don't want to be overheard or to overhear, it's usually a private thing for most couples and I don't believe everyone turns into a raging exhibitionist who doesn't give a fuck about anyone else just because they're on holiday and a hot tub is there.

Though apparently some do, given that sports holiday anecdote!

Vettrianofan · 26/07/2023 20:58

They are relaxing on holiday and enjoying themselves. They didn't hurt anyone. Let them have their fun. Sex is natural and most couples enjoy it on holiday. They will be gone soon. Wear some earplugs.
