Has anyone else given up on Summer?

After another miserable weekend, I feel like packing away the summer dresses and shorts 😢

It was so dull and cool this morning when I was getting dressed for work, I pulled out the opaque tights!

I feel so depressed to be giving up on summer at the end of July😞

Anyone else feeling this way?

Imagine working all year and going on holiday to Cornwall with this rain for two weeks, rubbish.

Chattermax · 24/07/2023 19:59

I bought some lovely new summer maxi dresses in June and two summer jumpsuits - my first time buying either and I was so excited to wear them. Have I worn any of them yet? No 😫. Luckily we're off to the Balearics mid August but after last year's hours waiting for luggage at the airport DH convinced me we'd manage with hand luggage only (two adults and two small children, for 10 days). So I can't even take all my lovely clothes with me, just a few outfits. It's rained non stop here today, SW. Tomorrow looks better but then back to the same 18/19 degrees and rain for the foreseeable. Horrific for the 'summer holidays'.

It feels like Autumn where I live. Rain, low, grey cloud and people passing by outside the house in jackets with their hoods pulled up. Not nice but, would take it any day over unbearable, searing heat or the hellish things that are happening elsewhere right now due to wildfires

LovingLalo · 24/07/2023 20:15

Just looked at monthly long range forecast. High pressure to build mid August. And warming up. So we may get a sunny 30c by late August /September. Fingers and toes crossed.

Hayliebells · 24/07/2023 20:21

The school summer hols need to move to mid-June/July. It's not unusual for August to be rubbish.

Actually you can all blame me. I got some new garden furniture (finally) a few weeks ago. Pretty much the moment it got set up the weather turned. As I guessed it would. SadGrin

No it's my fault sorry...the rain started the day after my solar panels went on the roof

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 24/07/2023 20:31

I had great summer holidays, a week in Lincolnshire, 2 days at Lytham Festival and a week in London.
I went in June/beginning of July which is still summer.
Not all of us have to wait for school holidays.

Same here. Scorching up to the day the panels arrived.

I feel so bad for the kids being stuck inside during the summer hols🥱

Why on earth would children be stuck inside, it’s rain not fucking acid?

we’re farmers, so at the moment we’re particularly fucked because the rain means we can’t get harvest in and too much warm and wet will flatten it and it will rot. The fact our livelihood depends on the weather makes my dry weather woes fairly trivial. We went out for a day with the kids today, it rained a bit but they were togged up and bonus there weren’t loads of people around.

blibblibs · 24/07/2023 20:44

I'll take some of the blame. Moved into a house with our first garden so the weather was bound to be shite this year!
Decided to book a last minute holiday to get some sun and booked Rhodes 3 days before the fires started.
I sincerely hope everyone is ok but I am feeling slightly jinxed.

NewspaperTaxis · 24/07/2023 20:49

Given up on July given it's forecast rain for next week too. June was good to be fair but I mentally knew it wouldn't last even when it feels like it will.

Of course, better all round than continental Europe currently, I would rather have this.

I planted some David Austin roses last week so the garden is going okay, not everything going dry and dusty.

Not given up on summer but without going all climate change sceptic (which I'm not), I'm not sure why we are missing the scorching temperatures of Europe, are we in some kind of pocket? Glad we are, however.

LimeCheesecake · 24/07/2023 20:53

only one thing for it - we’re going to have to mass order raincoats, jumpers and scarves - we might get a heatwave if everyone has gone autumn ready…

DueyCheatemAndHow · 24/07/2023 20:56

I'm in my onesie this evening.

I hope so - I’m camping at the end of August. I refuse to camp in the rain!

July has been especially awful this year.

DrCoconut · 24/07/2023 21:10

@ForeverFriendsAndPierrot lashing rain and wind is not perfect playing out weather. We got soaked to the skin crossing the road to the car during an unexpected downpour last week. Waterproofs are obviously an option if you know you're going out in the rain but they are cumbersome and uncomfortable compared to light summer clothes. Its miserable for July and I really need some sunshine now.

MsJuniper · 24/07/2023 21:21

I don't think there have been more than a couple of days in a row this year when I could confidently leave washing outside during the day, or send the children to school without a raincoat.

It does seem strange to think of the heatwave in Europe when we haven't seen a glimmer of it. We are in the crossfire of wet maritime air masses but even so it's not usually quite so bad. Last year was so glorious as was 2020.

Starlightstarbright2 · 24/07/2023 21:24

I booked my annual leave for September so hoping it is nicer in September

LimitIsUp · 24/07/2023 21:24

I'd like it a bit warmer and brighter, but overall I would choose this weather in preference to the 40 degree heat wave in southern Europe

lavenderlou · 24/07/2023 21:29

Position of the jet stream. It's further south than normal. Everything below the jet stream is very hot, above it is cool and rainy. A lot of Northern Europe has similar weather to us at the moment. Friends are on holiday in Denmark and it's wet.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 24/07/2023 21:34

I've pretty much given up on it now and am looking forward to woodburner and candles season and to wearing my nice winter coat again 😕

caringcarer · 24/07/2023 21:35

I'm sick of the rain. I have a DFS who plays cricket and 2 Saturdays in a row his match has been called off because of a downpour. It's the end of July we used to get sunshine in July and August.

Caterpillargirl23 · 24/07/2023 21:38

UK holiday prices go up in August exactly when the rain comes down.

Lilacshade · 24/07/2023 21:38

My DC are grown up now but it felt like every single year the best weather was in June and as soon as they broke up it started to rain.
Don't know why they don't move the holidays forward, apart from a couple of years recently, it feels like classic school holiday weather.

Nobody wants to be 'togged up' in July! I want warm sunshine, shorts and sandals, picnics in the park and long summer days in and out of the paddling pool.

I've not given up hope yet, but it is utterly miserable. Alongside the COL too, one of the nice things about summer is that you need to be actually doing anything much to have a nice time. Just mooching about in the sunshine 😥
