I know at first glance it looks like Lucy M Lloyd

But the capital L of Lloyd is completely different to the capital letter of the first name - and I'm sure Incan see an o! Making it not Lucy

Any thoughts please?

Ive found a family on the 1881 census

Principal
England and Wales Census, 1881
Census 1881
Madeley, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom
Birth 1860
Madeley, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom
ParentsFrancis Lloyd, Sarah Ann Lloyd
SiblingsFrancis Lloyd, George Lloyd, Samuel Lloyd, Louisa Lloyd, Alice Lloyd

could this be the same family?

There is also a birth of a Louisa Lloyd in 1873 at Madeley in the December quarter - which would tie up with the approximate year of birth

A 4 year old child wouldn't be getting a ring for her birthday or have I lost the plot?

ivykaty44 · 24/07/2023 20:51

Also there is a death of a Francis Lloyd in Madeley in 1882 which would explain why Sarah Ann was a widow in 1891

A marriage for Francis in 1886 which would explain why he is no longer home with mother

no, youre not losing the plot - I took the previous census and found the census 10 year before with the same people

In searching for that census there is a newspaper announcement of a marriage in 1883 for a Louey M Lloyd to a Rev Vawdry in Exeter

ivykaty44 · 24/07/2023 21:13

and it appear that Louey M Lloyd had her birthday on 21 August 1856 and died 29 October 1931

MoralOrLegal · 24/07/2023 21:16

@ivykaty44 Amazing detective work! Wonder if anyone can find Rev. Vawdry's initials...?

TheOwlChronicles · 24/07/2023 21:23

Good god @ivykaty44 I don't know what to say! That's incredible, you're so clever

I have Ancestry - can I find this myself?

And the ring COULD be a red herring! I can only assume they come together because that is what I have been told - they came together. But what if they didn't always come together? Impossible to say

Lewelleyn Brookes was his first name

sorry I got distracted with the census from 1891 that a previous poster had put up and was looking at that, but don't think thats the correct family.

Of course the marriage was in 1883 in Honiton Devon and the ring and letter was in 1877 so it might have been her future husband that gave her the ring? If she was born in 1856 then it would have been her 21st birthday so coming of age

It appears her full name was Louisa Maria Lloyd

having married clergy they moved to Cheshire, they hd 3 children by the looks of it and he died in 1916 and on her probate her daughter Margaret is mentioned

ivykaty44 · 24/07/2023 21:33

Check out the Exeter and Plymouth Gazete for the announcement of the marriage on 24th August 1883 after the wedding on 15th August - its on the British Library newspaper archive online

I think Louey father was also clergy, a Rev George Lloyd

SabrinaThwaite · 24/07/2023 21:38

He was Llewellyn Brooks Vawdrey (marriage Q3 1883 in Honiton District).

Here's a slightly clearer pic of the initials - the last one certainly looks like a V

The first two I'm not totally sure

Or am I confused? Would this have made LML's husband a distant relative, and was that common?

MoralOrLegal · 24/07/2023 21:45

But if I'm right, WWV could be grandpa sending a 21st birthday present!

SabrinaThwaite · 24/07/2023 21:46

I’m pretty sure it’s W W - the W matches the capital letter for With.

The last letter could be V or Y but most likely V?

TheOwlChronicles · 24/07/2023 21:49

@MoralOrLegal well, that could explain the note! It's loving but it's perhaps not something a husband would send a wife? It's more fond sounding isn't it?

Didn't a pp suggest it could be W West rather than W W V?

ivykaty44 · 24/07/2023 22:00

it wasn't uncommon for cousins to marry, it did happen and wasn't illegal

MoralOrLegal · 24/07/2023 22:05

Can someone with Ancestry peek at
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/8767/?name=William_Vaudrey
and see if the "Nawdrey" (1854, Cheshire) is a plausible candidate for WWV, MLM's possible grandfather? I'm really curious now!

SabrinaThwaite · 24/07/2023 22:05

Vawdrey family tree is here:

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~rnewfie/Family_History/Benjamin%20VAWDREY%20and%20Theodosia%20BROOKES.pdf

Grandpa was William Seaman Vawdrey, but Llewellyn Brookes Vawdrey had a brother William Wyatt Vawdrey.

TheOwlChronicles · 24/07/2023 22:09

This is so thrilling. Honestly. Makes my heart beat faster 😀

Because this is next to nothing to go on, I truly just wanted to know if people thought it was Louey or Lucy!

God knows what you guys would turn up with some of my letters

SabrinaThwaite · 24/07/2023 22:10

Actually WS Vawdrey was uncle, not grandpa according to that tree.

MoralOrLegal · 24/07/2023 22:14

I'm suggesting that LML's grandfather might have been a WWV, not her husband's grandfather, if that makes sense? No idea really how to check though.

ivykaty44 · 24/07/2023 22:22

Grandpa was William Seaman Vawdrey, but Llewellyn Brookes Vawdrey had a brother William Wyatt Vawdrey.

oooh I wonder if the broth William Wyatt he wooowed Louey first and gave her the ring for her 21st birthday
