I know at first glance it looks like Lucy M Lloyd

But the capital L of Lloyd is completely different to the capital letter of the first name - and I'm sure Incan see an o! Making it not Lucy

Any thoughts please?

Can anyone decipher this name from 1877?

Sorry if someone has said this already but the L in love matches the L of the first name.

TheOwlChronicles · 23/07/2023 21:57

@Nomoreheroics it really is! I've learned all sorts and it's very cheap to get started

I mean, it's pointless in one way but history and learning about it doesn't have to be all about the famous events.

I quite like the mundane and small mysteries

I've got too invested in this now 😀 and looked up copperplate capital L and F. They're not really formed the same way. I don't think it's an F.

It's definitely Lloyd because the L matches the one on the reverse. I wondered if there were any marriages with those initials so had a look on ancestry. The closest, and it's not very close, match I can find is a Lois Lloyd marrying a William Verrall in 1880, Tonbridge, Kent.

Well, this note seems to have been sent by "W.W.V." Do we have a winner?

Urghpox · 23/07/2023 21:58

Loney M Lloyd 🤔

alexdgr8 · 23/07/2023 21:59

Louey M Floyd

MoralOrLegal · 23/07/2023 21:59

(And I'm sure you all know this, but the "£" symbol is from the copperplate L, for Libra, the Latin for pound weight.)

ladyvivienne · 23/07/2023 21:59

I had an Uncle Lovett who was called Lovey for short. That was my initial thought tbh.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 23/07/2023 22:00

The first 'L' looks rather like a £-sign. Did people use rapper/gangster names 140 years ago - was £ouey her day's equivalent of Ke$ha? Grin

I think Lucy m Lloyd. I am certain that's not a n 'F' the second time. I don't think that anyone who was signing their name formally like this with the 'm' middle name would use an abbreviation or pet name like 'Louey'. I think what looks like the 'o' is just a swirl as the writer gets from the bottom of the L to the top of the 'u' in Lucy. I also think they've started the L at a slightly odd angle and had some trouble with the pen so it's just a slightly awkward 'L'.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 23/07/2023 22:01

@MoralOrLegal Does the record give their middle names or initials?!

MoralOrLegal · 23/07/2023 22:03

Not me that looked it up, that was @Theydontknowanything!

Hmm

But can it be Louey if the capital letter L is so different to the surname L?

I use two different "E's" in my name - go figure, I have no idea why. So it is entirely possible.

martinisforeveryone · 23/07/2023 22:05

I see Lorney M Lloyd with the lower case cursive r and a truncated n through familiarity of writing a name.

TheOwlChronicles · 23/07/2023 22:05

@Theydontknowanything now that is interesting!

It's not though. It just looks like the writer stalled a bit on the first letter.

TheOwlChronicles · 23/07/2023 22:07

@Mommasgotabrandnewbag yes, I think you - and others who've pointed it out - are correct.

It's not an F

I've found a 1881 census entry for William and Lois Verrall and his middle name is Henry.

swimminginthesun · 23/07/2023 22:10

Lorey M Lloyd

The L at the beginning of love looks like a cross between the two in the name. I think it’s a cursive r in the middle of the name, not a u. Compare with the u in August. And it’s definitely not Floyd.

AmyandPhilipfan · 23/07/2023 22:11

Could it not be a female sending a ring back to an ex fiancé? Maybe something happened, one of them had to move away or whatever and they decided they wouldn't be able to marry, but parted on amicable terms which is why it's sent back 'with love?'

FrenchieF · 23/07/2023 22:14

Lorey m Lloyd

lorey short for Laurel
as it’s a ring sent to a female

FrenchieF · 23/07/2023 22:15

Or even Lauren
