Stupid miserable British weather.

We used to take children in wellies and raincoats for our usual walks even in this sort of weather. The beach might not follow the usual pattern of picnic on the beach, sandcastles, ice cream outdoors, but the walk is pleasant and there's still things to see and do; rock pooling for instance.

We have all bloody year to do that though. Should get a break from it in July. June had a sunny couple of weeks but the biting wind still made the beach pretty unpleasant. I e no idea where all these cosy lovers find all the time to sit around under blankets. Most people have things to do that are a whole not nicer not fighting wind and horizontal rain

I remember rainy summer holidays as a young girl. It was a shame but down to the luck of the British weather and we made the best of it. We were only ever disappointed, on occasion, if some fairground rides closed as consequence.

It's better than record hot temperatures and worrying about climate change. Still worried about climate change, to add.

It is lovely. I think you’re exaggerating about the rain. It’s hardly never ending.

Agreed - it rained yesterday but has been pretty dry and sunny where I am today - we have some nice weather by the looks of things this week, a couple of rainy days but that's good for the garden :)

I'm actually envious of places with not much rain how sad is taut in July. We've had probably 6 Hours total without rain in the past 48 hours including overnight and to be honest I'm probably being generous with those estimates!

I wouldn't mind drizzle but it's been torrential here and it's looking like next week will be exactly the same.

emmylousings · 23/07/2023 19:17

Rain relentless here. I feel so sorry for the kids who've just broken up from school and want to play out.

feellikeanalien · 23/07/2023 20:17

I've just had a Facebook memory from 2 years ago come up. We were at the beach on the west cost of Scotland and it was glorious. I remember we were swimming and eating outside in the evening.

Now I'm contemplating whether to get new wellies and waterproofs for our Scottish island break.

Desperatenow1 · 23/07/2023 20:18

I am pretty sure an awful lot of this whinging about rain is perspective. I have to do something on a daily basis that is determined by rain/weather and I have a "buddy" who is in it with me so to speak. Every day I get "god the weather is so bad today, we can't possibly do this today" and I look out and think eh? What is she talking about....we live 6 minutes apart.

Yesterday for example i got a message saying weather was absolutely hideous and we couldn't possibly do the thing today. I was outside walking my dogs and it was fine....bit of drizzle but nothing stopping us doing the thing.

I get a lot of messages on a daily basis telling me how bad the weather is and I look out and it's dry, might be drizzling a bit and a bit windy but nothing that should stop us.....all about perspective I guess.

I'm really not sure that it's about perspective. If it's pissing it down it's pissing it down. I doubt very much most of us who are moaning about the crap weather are making it up and it's actually not wet and miserable, maybe your friends do because they can't be arsed to do the thing you do daily together but in this instance it's hard to argue with the weather forecasts and pictures posted on this thread.

I also feel like it come from a place of privlidge to be able to enjoy this weather. It's not particularly nice if you have to use public transport, live in a small house, gave little kids, can't afford indoor activities for the kids and have to work out of the house. But maybe a bit more pleasant if you drive from a to b, wfh and have teens who will entertain themselves for hours in their rooms.

See, I would loathe this too. I go insane if I'm indoors. So I go outdoors to get my 20k steps in. But it's fucking miserable, and I would rather be doing it in the sunshine. So would my student children, who are also fucked off with the weather - still going out and doing stuff outdoors, but getting wet, cold and miserable in the process. They ought at least to be able to sit and have a sunny pint outside with their friends after a long walk/run/bike ride.

It’s flooding now in the next village so I’m guessing those people aren’t feeling ‘cosy’ 🙄.

They'll be fine, snuggled up in their blankets with a nice cuppa.

Hotflushesinthesunfun · 23/07/2023 20:45

I’ve just seen pictures of Skipton food festival with tents now in the middle of their new lake feature. I don’t think that’s just their perspective.
I set off to walk my dogs in drizzle today, less than 6 minutes to my walk and it was hammering it down, back home it was back to drizzle. Until it started hammering it down here and hasn’t stopped for the last 10 hours.
Somebody please reassure me I’ll arrive in the Lakes to a heatwave tomorrow?

Nonsense - nothing to do with perspective. I’m perfectly well aware of when it’s cold, grey and raining and when the sun is shining and it’s warm, and I much prefer walking the dog three times a day in the latter.

Chatillon · 23/07/2023 21:10

@Hotflushesinthesunfun
The greater the temperature rises above 14 degrees the greater the chance of rain next week in the Lakes.

I find windy.com more accurate than other sites. It can also debunk much of the nonsense clickbait that appears online.

Even from my dog’s perspective it’s too wet today. I gave up waiting for the rain to clear and took him out for a walk so he could go to the toilet. He turned round and came home 😂.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 23/07/2023 21:27

Also pretty sure the fact that every road out of my village is flooded suggests that it’s not just a bit of drizzle!

Yesterday in Kent at 4pm it was throwing it down, windy and 15 degrees. I just kept saying imagine camping in this weather. I use to camp. I can’t be bothered now unless it’s guaranteed to be dry

It’s just your perspective! Camping in the pissing rain - confined to your tent with wet clothes that won’t dry - is a perfectly enjoyable holiday.

I thought you were going to say it’s cosy.

which it is for 10 mins. But not days of rain when all of the bedding is damp.

Ha, a few twinkling lights and who cares about the rain. 🙄

No camping is only good in warm dry weather. I’d refuse to go otherwise. Nothing worse than camping in the rain

The only thing I can think of that's worse than camping in the rain is camping in the rain with kids and a wet dog. 😂 There's not enough perspective in the world to make that enjoyable.

In other news I've just took one last look at the forecast before bed and guess what... Tomorrow for a change it's meant to rain. 🌧️

Chatillon · 23/07/2023 22:25

The rain we have had the last few weeks isn’t enough to close the ground cracks and movement that have gradually shifted the topography over the last few years in some areas and specific locations. We do need more rain than we have been used to, particularly for those householders subject to ground subsidence. This is going to be a new and growing phenomenon in the UK.

morelippy · 23/07/2023 22:27

It's a normal British summer. Global warming is a load of shite imo.

Or the North West. It hasn’t let up for a single second 🙈.

Cheshire here. Peed it down all day. Hasn't let up for one single second. Around 17 ° all day.
