Since when did this become a thing?

I’ve recently joined a local gym having spent a lot of my adult life trying to avoid the place. Don’t have much social media so didn’t realise the new “trend” is to wear scrunch bum shorts and sports bras

Honestly so many females wearing this in my gym. I felt like the odd one out wearing a black tshirt and some old black leggings.

Ive always done running so in okay shape but I felt out of place in what I was wearing having just started. Maybe I just need to pay less attention to others 😂

In the gym fair enough but the local school had issues with 6th formers wearing flesh coloured ones to school, also those (incredibly short tight) Nike shorts not to mention short skirts. The kids are on a final warning, where more suitable own clothes or a uniform will be introduced. Yesterday I was behind a group and i could see far more than I wanted including a not very substantial thong on one teen, do they really want strangers to see that?

I taught aerobics in the 90's - micro shorts and bra tops, seriously cut away leotards 😳but I can honestly say, I would never, ever, ever, of been seen in those 🤮

Vomit emoji?
Struggling to see much of a distinction really between the super high cut away stuff etc you mention and these.
Are you sure if you were that age again and this was the seriously in thing you'd have spurned it, why would you do that? It's ticking the same boxes as those 90's fashions after all.
Showing off your figure is what the fashions you mentioned and these scrunch bum things are all about, what's the difference?
I say that as someone who thinks they look really uncomfortable but people on this thread have said they're super comfy so I'm probably wrong about that anyway.

WilkinsonM · 21/07/2023 08:01

Wearing a sports bra by itself without a top is much cooler and if I wasn't self conscious about my belly I'd do the same. The leggings are just a style. Sports leggings are much better to work out in than 'old black leggings' and at the moment it's just a trend. Nothing to criticise really.

It’s like some fashion designer went
‘well we’ve don’t boobs, legs, bums …. Oh what about arseholes?
Let’s make them the focus this season?

Pinkneonballoon · 21/07/2023 08:04

The judgment on here is horrible. Just let women do what they want. Ffs

MentholLoad · 21/07/2023 08:05

I think those leggings/shorts look great on the young uns. I don't think I have seen even one person filming for social media in any of the gyms I have used. I barely notice what people are wearing/doing though...aren't you just there to work out and mind your business?

blackbeardsballsack · 21/07/2023 08:07

I wear cycling shorts and a sports bra in the gym. That's what I am comfy exercising in. I honestly believed that nobody cared about what anyone else wore and convinced myself that nobody was looking or judging, but cheers Mumsnet for making me aware that plenty of women are ready to dig me out and snigger at how terrible I look, how I'm only there for photos and not to exercise, and how attention seeking I am.

it is horrible isn't it. who even notices or cares what other people are wearing in the gym

WilkinsonM · 21/07/2023 08:08

All the posters saying how they wear baggy trackies and old holey t shirts has a whiff of 'not like other girls' about it
Maybe let's not?

I think these people are in the minority honestly

Anyotherdude · 21/07/2023 08:09

I am guessing that the scrunch bum shorts are for those aspiring to a Kim Kardashian’s booty (implants?) - they’ll be coming in, not cup, but bowl sizes next😂😂😂

As long as people don’t block machines without using them or leave sweat stains around, I don’t care.

and I’m usually too occupied to really look around anyway…

LunaNorth · 21/07/2023 08:16

Scrunch bum leggings look like the anus has gone rogue and has started to take over the whole arse.

If it helps, some of us don't give a shit. I mean that in a nice way. I'm there to exercise too.

CrapBucket · 21/07/2023 08:16

I’ve never tried them but I imagine they are very comfortable. There is nothing wrong with following fashion, and wearing whatever you want to.

Hibiscrubbed · 21/07/2023 08:21

The younger women who do ineffective workouts they’ve seen on Tiktok and Insta wear these. Gym Shark is rife.

I mean, they all look awesome and are in great shape, but I cringe when I see their form doing some of their ‘exercises’.

Plus the younger ones tend to hog the mirrors because “if you didn’t post it socials, why even bother?”

I just think this reflects you tbh....I don't see any of this on social media, because.... algorithm..and I follow loads of health and fitness/food people

and just go to a different gym 🤷🏼‍♀️ I've been to loads and in none of them are these people rife..I've never seen them

itsmyp4rty · 21/07/2023 08:30

Is there some point to them or are they literally to emphasis how big your arse is? I guess at one time a lot of women wanted their tits hanging out and now they want their arses hanging out. It's all a bit grim IMO, but you don't know better when you're young.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/07/2023 08:30

I wouldn't wear that cut of shorts because of my self-flaying thighs nor wanting to look like a lost prop from James and the Giant Peach.

Not that the leggings appeal either; I wasn't fond of wedgies when they were all the rage in my youth (thongs poking out of hipster jeans era)
They remind me of my merino wool long johns.

I do wear cropped tops because they are comfortable for releasing heat when working out. I don't have a model/ instagram body, but I'm not going to hide it away either.

Clothes that look like they're disappearing up one's bum crack are not a comfortable look and fails the test on is it attractive in either sex. It makes me want to clench my own buttocks to check that they're not sneaking any fabric up there as they are wont to do!

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 21/07/2023 08:33

Gosh. This is such a revolutionary concept. Ruching that frames a body part on women’s clothing. Pointless, media led trends followed by some women. Judgement from other women who don’t like this.

that said, flesh coloured clothing makes me wtf - skin tight chinos mostly.

Iateallthechocolate · 21/07/2023 08:34

Side eyes the photo of myself in a thong leotard over cycling shorts sometime in the 90s

orangeyeahthatsright · 21/07/2023 08:35

Radiodread · 20/07/2023 23:14

They are hideous! Yuck. I’m not for modesty but these look like you’re hiding a Cornish pasty in your arse crack.

splutter 😂😂😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/07/2023 08:37

Maybe they find them more comfortable. Much more important than worrying about what other people think.

My gnarly old legs probably look a bit grim from behind in cycling shorts but I don’t care, rather that than sweat all the way round my walk.

Cumberlover76 · 21/07/2023 08:37

Ha ha, I noticed someone at the gym yesterday wearing these walking to her car and wondered why she was walking around with a wedgie 😂They look very uncomfortable!

orangeyeahthatsright · 21/07/2023 08:37

I love the fact that nowadays so many women want their arses to look big. I'm in my 50s now but all my contemporaries used to worry in case their arses looked big. The whims of fashion.
