Since when did this become a thing?

I’ve recently joined a local gym having spent a lot of my adult life trying to avoid the place. Don’t have much social media so didn’t realise the new “trend” is to wear scrunch bum shorts and sports bras

Honestly so many females wearing this in my gym. I felt like the odd one out wearing a black tshirt and some old black leggings.

Ive always done running so in okay shape but I felt out of place in what I was wearing having just started. Maybe I just need to pay less attention to others 😂

If it helps, some of us don't give a shit. I mean that in a nice way. I'm there to exercise too.

Cycling shorts and sports bra are comfortable and practical.

My shorts need enough length so they stay put and I can keep my skin protected.

It's different to something that has less fabric than my Runderwear!

Hopefully scrunch bum can eventually be filled away with other defunct fashions like shell suits. I was only saved from following that particular fashion because they were found to be major fire hazards before my mum got round to buying me one 😂

ScandiNoirNuit · 21/07/2023 08:43

This is definitely the look in my local cheapy gym too. I was surprised when I first joined but expect it now, guess it is just the current gym fashion.

I looked in sweaty Betty to upgrade my kit and even they seem to just sell leggings / shorts with matching sports bra ie rather than t shirt / vest combo so it is everywhere. I don’t fancy that but good luck to women who want to wear it!

EatYourVegetables · 21/07/2023 08:45

I absolutely hate them. Especially in tan - urm, do you realise you look like you forgot your trousers and knickers today??

But I wear what I like, and internally feel superior because I don’t look that ridiculous.

I just go to the gym, focus on my workout then go home. I rarely notice what other people are wearing, if I do it’s fleeting. Wear what you want to the gym to be comfy - it’s much more important to exercise well and get the best out of it than worry about what you are wearing. Most people I suspect are not paying attention to what anyone else is wearing either. So don’t feel self-conscious.

Gymmum82 · 21/07/2023 08:50

They’ve been a thing for a while now. I don’t like the scrunch bum thing so I don’t wear them. But I do wear sports bra and leggings. They are comfortable and look good.
I don’t really pay much attention to what others are wearing unless I see something I really like. No one really cares what you wear

NetZeroZealot · 21/07/2023 08:52

I'm a runner. I'm relatively fit but you wouldn't know to look at me.

ActDottie · 21/07/2023 08:53

I don’t really notice others at the gym. The only ones I sometimes notice are those in full make up and very little clothing who barely sweat and seem to just be there to try attract men! But I wouldn’t say everyone at my gym wears what you’ve just said.

Wineandrun · 21/07/2023 08:57

If they’re not just in a sports bra their t shirt is tucked into their bra at the back so we can marvel at their bottoms! I admire their confidence and keep sweating away in my running shorts and old vest, fat armpits on show. Seriously, the day I turned 40 I developed fat armpits. The rest of me is slim (minus a bit of a mum tum). But the armpits? Weird.

DrMorbius · 21/07/2023 08:59

Thank you for this post. I have been going to gym's for 40 years and this modern female gym wear drives me mad. Tiny shorts and bra's, ooh look at me. What narcissists.
I have long complained about this to my DW and DD's and they trot out the lines "women should wear what they want", but I bet there would be more than a few raised eyes if I turned up in a Borat outfit and strutted about the gym.
Also people sat on the equipment looking at their mobile phones.....now don't get me started on that.

blobby10 · 21/07/2023 09:00

Get them at my gym too as well as the leggings/shorts which have contouring to highlight the bum 🤦‍♀️None of the females wearing this sort of kit appears to sweat either unlike me in my black capri leggings and t shirt who looks like she has just come in from the rain after half an hour! The worst are the skin tone/pale pink leggings which show every lump and bump including cellulite!

VictoriaVenkman · 21/07/2023 09:00

Depends on what type of gym you go to. Mine is cheap and cheerful and you just see lots of standard black leggings / track suit bottoms and black tops.

The more flash the gym, the more flash the gear.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/07/2023 09:04

What a horrible thread.

If I ran MN I’d take it down as not in the spirit.

ThreeRingCircus · 21/07/2023 09:05

I don't think it's a good look, the croissant arse aesthetic is not for me.

However, I wore my thong on show with low slug jeans as a young 'un in the early 00s and thought I looked fabulous so what do I know? 🤣

People wear all sorts at my gym so I don't really recognise what you're describing.

I used to be an avid runner and was in a running club and no runner ever looked 'in shape', though. Either scrawny or normal. Running doesn't change anyone's shape IME.

Maybe the gym folk you are seeing are proud of their bodies and want to show them off. That's ok.

I think you have a very specific opinion on what in shape means 😆 Probably linked to
Current fashions in body shape. Of course runners are often in shape. Maybe they don't fit your body ideal, but to imply they and by association the OP are not in shape is mean, but that was deliberate wasn't it? Because she said something that made you feel defensive

Kdubs1981 · 21/07/2023 09:09

Radiodread · 20/07/2023 23:14

They are hideous! Yuck. I’m not for modesty but these look like you’re hiding a Cornish pasty in your arse crack.

🤣 such poetic imagery! 🤣

meatbaseddessert · 21/07/2023 09:09

Mate. Im a 50 yr old size 18 half marathon runner.

What my fellow gym goers are wearing are if no interest to me.

I wear what makes me comfy. At present LuLuLemon leggings and a racer back fitted running vest with a fucking great sports bra. I don't care what others think and I've never felt they give a jot about me. I also don't judge others

Focus on yourself. I promise you are of no interest to others in the gym.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 21/07/2023 09:13

I haven't seen the crunch bums yet. At my gym the over 40 crowd tend to wear LuluLemon or Sweaty Betty leggings and yoga pants with crop tops/racer back running vests. The younger ones wear nude leggings and crop tops. God knows why they want to appear naked from the waist down in clothes that highlight every spot of cellulite but fashion has never made sense.

I'm extra old (over 60) and mix it up a bit. I respect the Sweaty Betty leggings protocol but on my top half it's old band t-shirts or Primark t-shirts.

gonetogreece · 21/07/2023 09:13

My SD wears these to the gym.. you are right its definitely all on show but if I'm being honest she looks amazing and I'm a a bit jealous, and I also used to flaunt my toned teenage bod all those years ago. I'd look ridiculous now but each to their own.

Gingerboy22 · 21/07/2023 09:14

I think the basic problem with them is that they all are highlighting your a**e hole - they are literally pointing to it. It's all trend isn't it? I remember in the 1980s we used to stride about in unitards . How we managed it without camel toe or any damp spots I have no idea but yeah we were young and pre children bladders all intact 😂

FrangipaniBlue · 21/07/2023 09:15

If you have the time to a) notice and then b) care what other women are wearing in your gym then you aren't working hard enough.

Concentrate on you.

FFS no wonder there is thread after thread on here from women who are scared or nervous about going to the gym for the first time!

Absolutely vile thread, probably one of the worst I've seen in all my years on MN.

ScarletWitchM · 21/07/2023 09:17

Imagine if this was a thread by someone who wears those shorts and crop tops to the gym slagging off people that wear leggings and baggy t-shirts. I don’t see why it’s ok to shame others for wearing something you don’t like that causes you no harm?

megletthesecond · 21/07/2023 09:19

Lots of us can still work hard and notice what people are wearing and doing. I don't wear blinkers while working out.

Groutyonehereagain · 21/07/2023 09:20

GCSister · 21/07/2023 07:14

What a nasty thread.

I don’t actually think it’s nasty at all. We’re just discussing a fashion some of us don’t get.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/07/2023 09:26

Terven · 21/07/2023 05:49

They’re not decent and you’re making other people uncomfortable.

That is other people's problem, not the wearer. Women can wear what they like without being told off for it. Wind your neck in.
