The joy of a new notebook

I'm surely not the only one? I was telling dh that I've almost finished my current notebook and that it's exciting because it means I get to start my new one. It's a beautiful notebook - it has a gold, shiny cover - and I've got the nice gold shimmer ink to use in it.

When I said all this, Dh looked at me like I've got two heads, as did one of my dc (the other has a better understanding of all things stationery).

Light-hearted question obviously, but do you get excited by new notebooks?

I have asked for one for Christmas. I will use my very favourite purple Papermate Inkjoy gel pens to write in it. I plan to write my thoughts about my cancer journey....

That sounds like a fab use of a fancy book and I hope it brings you hope and comfort. Good luck on your journey.

Is anyone expecting anything nice for Christmas ? My husband is giving me a fountain pen (after much hinting) . Does anyone have any pointers for a first timer ?

I was thinking about this thread earlier because we're off to London a week on Monday, all being well, and I'm hoping to visit some lovely stationery shops whilst there.

Ds managed to lose his pencil case at school and it has apparently disappeared into an alternative universe, never to be seen again; this of course means more stationery shopping over the Xmas holidays 🥳🎉

I would suggest go into a shop and try them if possible.
Make sure, if you do get a fountain pen, not too hold it closer to or touching the nib because that's when you end up with inky fingers.
Pens I like are my Hong Dian https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B09PFR1MHS?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title and my Scriveiner https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B08BZQ3M1R?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title but my children like their Lamy Safaris https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01BPBNZ2W?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&th=1

I think it's a Watermans one he has bought . I'm pretty excited at all the stuff I shall be writing after dinner is done . I have had a sneaky look at the shimmery inks 😊, but lets not run before I can walk 😁.

I bought some lovely shimmery inks but I just can't get on with them in any of my fountain pens which makes me quite sad.

LaChatte · 08/12/2023 21:45

My favourite pen is my Waterman Expert fine point, I've had it for ages and it's taken quite a beating (including being dropped twice on a tiled floor WITHOUT THE CAP ON 😱) but it still writes beautifully (with Waterman ink). I'm tempted to add a new one onto my permanent wishlist.

I found that they do clog up the nib on a couple of my pens but they work fine with the scriveiner and the Hong Dian if I wash them between fills and occasionally carefully twist the twisty thing in the converter to push the ink towards the nib.

It's interesting to see what other people use notebooks for. My current one is an A4 Black 'n Red in which I write down anything interesting - science stuff, feminism stuff, a couple of book reviews I've written, politics, history, etc.

I recently discovered the term "commonplace book", which is for collecting knowledge in an organised fashion. Well, I've failed on that last bit. And anyway, I don't want to organise things. I often just flip through the pages and I think the randomness of things makes it more interesting.

I've got a Parker fountain pen which I enjoy using, but the nib seems to get clogged up more easily these days. The stationery shop in town is open tomorrow. I might just brave the weather and see what they've got.

RumNotRun · 28/12/2023 14:31

Did anyone get a stationery advent calendar? I think Papier and possibly Cult pens both did one but they were sold out by the time I looked.

There's a thread in site stuff where people are asking for the stationery cupboard back so I've directed them over here. Hopefully we'll get some more participants who may have fancy stationery to tempt us!

MyMachineAndMe · 28/12/2023 17:16

I looked at them but settled for a chocolate one instead!

Both of my dc got money for Christmas and want to spend it on stationery so I said, when the car is fixed, I'll take them to Meadowhell to do so.

Have you tried taking the pen apart and cleaning the whole nib section? Or even tried new/different inks?

So I did get a Waterman fountain pen for Christmas , it is lovely and everybody in the house has had a go at using it and it is my new favourite thing 🖋.

Ooh lovely, which model did you get?

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 31/12/2023 09:17

As a first fountain pen it was the Allure and I love it . I have been looking at the shimmery inks but not so sure with a fine nib .

The pen in currently using has a fine nib - a Hong Dian https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B09PFR1MHS?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title extra fine - and the shimmery ink gives my writing a bit of a sheen and an occasional sparkle, if that makes sense.
