The joy of a new notebook

I'm surely not the only one? I was telling dh that I've almost finished my current notebook and that it's exciting because it means I get to start my new one. It's a beautiful notebook - it has a gold, shiny cover - and I've got the nice gold shimmer ink to use in it.

When I said all this, Dh looked at me like I've got two heads, as did one of my dc (the other has a better understanding of all things stationery).

Light-hearted question obviously, but do you get excited by new notebooks?

Lol I've no money at the moment, luckily, or else I'd have been tempted to get something! I already have my next book ready for when my golden one is finished. A lovely red one!

I totally get it 😂 so much so that I started designing and manufacturing my own notebooks to sell haha

dontletsaskforthemoon · 08/09/2023 16:58

And there was me feeling embarrassed about my love of all things stationery!!!! My daughter and I used to buy stacks from a company called Kikki-K, it's a Swedish based company but felt very guilty about the spends ££££...so I check out WHSmith every so often for a feel and smell 🤣of their notebook ranges.

I bought this beauty on line a few years back, can't for the life if me remember what webpage but the paper is made from elephant poo! Great for biro but not for fountain pens tho.

You have all renewed my love of stationery so I've made a list of all the companies you're all recommending in my elephant poo notebook!!

They're beautiful books @Heyhoherewegoagain and @dontletsaskforthemoon.

I didn't realise so many people still like to write things down but then I suppose they must since the market for pens and inks and books is huge!

We have a local street library and I recently picked up an unused 70s vintage Italian recipe jotter with green paper edged with a cactus design. Tis an object of absolute beauty.

Excitement here! I bought a new notebook today as I am going to start evening classes in Italian soon.
Also..random but watching news the other day and they were discussing a new Ken Dodd exhibition and as you often find with memorabilia they stated that the most precious things were ....his notebooks! 😀

@MyMachineAndMe I'm always happy to bookmark yet another specialist stationary supplier but I don't think they have something utilitarian enough for what I'm looking for. I need small-ish, thin, light, bendy, soft backed (preferably with a wipe-able cover) books to squeeze into my rucksack, shoulder bag or pocket (at a squeeze). I've got some A5's and A4's for my Spanish language notes.

I think the size I'm after is roughly B6 (125 x 176mm) - the A sizes are familiar but there is also a B (and a C) series of success but they're not common. I've got some square and landscape watercolor books but they are a bit pricey due to the higher paper weight and paper quality - far too good for scribbled notes.

In the end I couldn't find what I wanted but I bought a 3-pack of some small cheap Moleskines - £7.99 (90 x 140mm) - I'm travelling for 3 weeks so needed something quick. A bit smaller than the current haiku pad.

I love these, thanks for posting this link, they look very stylish. They are similar to some notebooks I picked up a few years ago in Italy that are now full.

MyMachineAndMe · 16/09/2023 22:48

Dc 2 and I went to a Japanese stationery shop together a while ago and loved ît. 12 floors?! I'd be in there for months!

@larkstar sorry I couldn't be more helpful, and thank you for the paper size info; I sometimes have my photos printed but occasionally crop it to an awkward size so it might be useful.

I like Moleskine books but found their paper want very good for fountain pens as the ink would bleed through to the other side too much.

I can understand his notebooks being the most precious; I think mine are for me, too, along with my photo albums.

I hope your evening classes are going well and the notebook is being well used.

Thank you @MyMachineAndMe so far it's going well. Notes are being scrawled into a cheap notebook ( but a new notebook nevertheless!) which I will later on transfer neatly to my posher one which I have decorated red green and white for Italy 😀

LadyLolaRuben · 17/09/2023 16:06

I love note books. I have 21 volumes going back to 2009 for work. I have one for finance - double page spread of whats coming in and out each month, savings etc, a journal, recipes, places I'd like to visit, manifesting thoughts/ideas.

I loved reading this thread this morning. It caused me to stay in bed until 11am. Im off to research all of your recommendations!

😂 one of my siblings has started an access course and does the same!

@LadyLolaRuben I hope you manage to find some that you love. Where do you keep your used books btw? I'm running out of space on the bookshelf, in the drawer, on another bookshelf and in a box...

Off topic but I love your username - I often jokingly threaten my parents with Shady Pines!

shadypines · 17/09/2023 22:00

😀Thank you, ha ha, yes I used to say this to my mother on a regular basis. Alas, I could do with a bed in there now!

IsisoftheWalbrook · 17/09/2023 22:22

I have been quite pleased with some of the very simple notebooks from Sainsbury’s (Habitat) recently.

I’ve also seen a beautiful one with parrots on it from TK Maxx, but managed to restrain myself.

I have just cleared out a bureau that for years has been filled with my late mother’s paperwork. I now have a home for all my fabulous and beautiful things.
