So I’m English and I’m on holiday in Scotland. How much is everyone secretly hating me?

I’m in a small town in Scotland on holiday. I’m from the north of England. Everyone has been very polite and welcoming.

But, tell me the truth, how much secret hostility is there?

Don’t be ridiculous. I’ve been to different parts of Scotland and everyone has always been lovely. I think they hate dickheads rather than the British in general. If youre a respectful visitor the Scottish are excellent hosts!

FionnulaTheCooler · 15/07/2023 20:54

Unless you're acting like an arsehole the whole time I think you're fine. Scotland is used to tourists.

albapunk · 15/07/2023 20:54

Scottish with an English partner!

Most of us are exactly as you describe, usually some friendly banter can be exchanged and all is good. There's the usual arsehole or drunken lout that takes it too far, but par for the course with every area in the UK.

The issue most Scottish people have is really with Westminster, not the actual English themselves really. Unless you are one of the folk who deem Scotland a waste of space money draining extension of England.

Seriously though, we are all generally friendly and my partner in all his years here has never had any trouble, and we orginally lived in my pretty rough home town!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2023 20:56

On the whole, I've always found the Sots to have bloody beautiful manners. I grew up in Helensburgh and, despite being English never felt out of things. That part of Scotland truly has my heart for always ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I’ve absolutely encountered nothing but friendliness. Then I got chatting to an English girl who lives here and she’s encountered a few problems and it’s made me think. I am friendly and polite of course, as I would be anywhere.

What a weird question.
I'm also Scottish and married to an English guy and we live in Scotland.

Bideshi · 15/07/2023 20:56

None. Especially in small towns. Absolute zero. Honestly.

What a goady post. Why would they hate you ffs

Honestly I despair of some people

You're not the first tourist you know

GoFaster83 · 15/07/2023 20:57

We hate wankers. We like everyone else. Bonus points if you have a dog with you.

Redglitter · 15/07/2023 20:57

I’ve absolutely encountered nothing but friendliness

So why would you question it

What a weird thread

AreWeHated · 15/07/2023 20:59

I absolutely 100% do not align myself with any of that Westminster shit @albapunk I’m an unapologetic leftie from the English “provinces” that have been shafted by the tories as much as Scotland. I hope I come across just like that 🤷‍♀️

I’m English married to a Scottish guy

They won’t be supporting England in a football match but other than that no hostility

AreWeHated · 15/07/2023 21:01

Ive just said why @Redglitter i got chatting to an English woman who said she’d encountered hostility and it made me think. I hope that’s ok! 🙄

Fuck me, I grew up in very rural Scotland and have my mum’s English accent (rather than my dad’s Scottish one), half my school had at least one English parent (and had English accents themselves). I occasionally got called “posh”. Did everyone actually hate me? Trauma.

ginghamstarfish · 15/07/2023 21:03

We've lived in Scotland twice, me from the north of England, husband half Scottish but sounds like posh English (boarding school!). We have never had any problems or anything like that, but have always been aware of a sense of not quite belonging. We have separately and together lived in many places here and abroad, and never felt that anywhere else as in Scotland. Now back in north of England and feeling like I belong (DH likes it too)!

Hardly any for tourists who bring in money to the economy. A lot of residents of Scotland (including me) are also from other parts of the UK.

So she's perceived hostility. You haven't. Maybe she's an arse. Thats no reason to assume you're 'secretly hated' 🙄 You're making a sweeping assumption that she's had 'hostility' for being English when it might be totally unrelated

AreWeHated · 15/07/2023 21:07

I’m not being goady. Just a few drinks in and wondering. I’m delighted if it’s not the case that people are secretly hating on us. I actually have really strong (75%) Scottish roots as it happens, despite sounding very English.

I am very happy to be told it’s all in this woman’s imagination

I'm Scottish and live in Scotland with my English DH.

If you're visiting Scotland, just don't be a dick and you'll be grand. Nobody cares about your accent.

Hostile anti-English wankers are few and far between in Scotland. If you encounter any, just ignore them.

AreWeHated · 15/07/2023 21:12

She didn’t seem like an arse @Redglitter but who knows from a friendly encounter in a pub. She’s lived here a while and has a strong se England accent (I don’t!) and was telling me her experience, unprompted. I had no reason to disbelieve her, or you.

Scottish with an English husband. Hate that people actually think this about us 😥

thaegumathteth · 15/07/2023 21:17

I'm from NE England and I've lived in Scotland for 23 years since I was 19. Never had any problem. My kids do take the piss out of my accent though!

SorryIAintGotNoMoney · 15/07/2023 21:18

A very good friend is married to an English man and I've witnessed first hand him getting hassle/abuse on multiple occasions purely based on his accent. Their very lovely children have both had bother at school because they sound English. Can't remember the last time I went to a comedy night where there wasn't at least one cheap shot about 'the English'.

It might only be a few arseholes but I think it's quite disingenuous or faux naive to claim anti-English sentiment is unusual.

countvoncount · 15/07/2023 21:20

Think you've been watching too much braveheart 😂
The Scots are the friendliest, most genuine welcoming people, I love Scotland and have never felt anything but welcome!

YouAndMeAndThem · 15/07/2023 21:20

My English parents have lived in Scotland for 35 years and have never looked back. There is the odd joke in the pub but it's always a joke.
