So I’m English and I’m on holiday in Scotland. How much is everyone secretly hating me?

I’m in a small town in Scotland on holiday. I’m from the north of England. Everyone has been very polite and welcoming.

But, tell me the truth, how much secret hostility is there?

I holiday in Scotland all the time and scottish people have always been lovely to me and my family. I love Scotland ❤️

I'm English, living in Scotland. The only places I've encountered any problems like this are Glasgow & Dundee. And even then, it's only a few people who are that petty.

This.

Honestly I despair sometimes.

I agree. The

I find the notion of "secret hostility" being common in Scotland quite amusing. In general, if we don't like someone, we will rarely be shy about letting them know. The fact that you are even contemplating this indicates you see us as somehow alien and very different from you. That tends to be the sort of attitude that causes friction.

AreWeHated · 16/07/2023 06:45

I was contemplating it purely because an English person living here mentioned it to me when I asked where she was from as she was clearly from England. She told me she’d met with some hostility over the years of living here. I was surprised as I assumed it was all just banter as described on this thread. She said it had often been more than that which is why I thought I’d consult the people of MN where I knew I’d get robust opinions.

Scottish people would not openly admit to antipathy towards the English but the dislike is there, and it is explicit.

I'm afraid I just don't think this is true @JodyMitchell . I'm a Scottish person and I don't think that, I am married to an Englishman. We lived together in Scotland for 15 years before moving to England 10 years ago to be near his mum. I'm very happy living here but he would be the first to admit that I have had far more negative comments since living here than he had whilst living in Scotland because some people are just wankers. However, I still would not place the blame for that on an entire nation of people, as you have. I think that's a horrible thing to do.

This whole thread is pretty unpleasant actually which I suspect was the OPs intention.

I have been verbally abused a number of times in England for being Scottish. I do believe this was isolated incidents as you get arseholes everywhere....

Yeah so have I, it happens but as you said arseholes everywhere. I've had a bit of abuse on mumsnet for being Scottish !

Nobody hates you. Honestly nobody. I live in Edinburgh though so there are as many English accents in DC's school as there are Scottish but wherever I've been to eye have been tourists and never seen anyone bat an eyelid. Apologies about the weather though, it's normally nicer in July 😖

AnorLondo · 17/07/2023 15:24

I don't understand why you would assume everyone secretly hates you. It's not like English accents are particularly rare in Scotland anyway

Dibbydoos · 20/08/2023 08:20

I've met Scottish, Welsh and Irish people who hate the English, but that's on them imo.
Nothing any of us can do about what our ancestors did or didn't do is there?!

Pretend they're all as lovely etc as they seem and don't worry about it @AreWeHated

Scotland is a beautiful country. Enjoy!

I love the Scots. Raised in England, and have been to some remote areas in the Highlands, and people showed nothing but warmth and kindness.
