So I’m English and I’m on holiday in Scotland. How much is everyone secretly hating me?

I’m in a small town in Scotland on holiday. I’m from the north of England. Everyone has been very polite and welcoming.

But, tell me the truth, how much secret hostility is there?

I'm from Yorkshire and did some work in Scotland a few weeks ago. Everyone was lovely and we had some banter about different words for things. Eg I was offered a 'fancy piece' which I didn't know what it was so joked about how it sounded like someone's mistress or something you shouldn't Google.

TBF @Doidontimmm any time the football is on, we hear a lot about how Scottish people support whichever team England is playing and it doesn't always sound that friendly.

CalistoNoSolo · 15/07/2023 21:21

You're far more likely to get hostility from locals when you go to Cornwall or Norfolk. I've been to lots of places in Scotland and I have a v middle class accent, and only ever felt very welcome. Tbh, for most places in the world, if you act like an arse that's how you'll be treated.

Thunderisntnicebythebeach · 15/07/2023 21:21

Geordie lass here... We go to Mull 4 times a year.. At Easter I met a shopkeeper who lived 2 streets from my birth place! Well accepted up there ime!

kittycatsmum · 15/07/2023 21:26

Hopefully none.

Are you that way so expecting others to be like it?

As far as I'm concerned if you're a nice person that's what matters regardless of what you may sound like/ look like etc.

Hiddenvoice · 15/07/2023 21:27

Scottish here with Welsh and English family. One of my parents is welsh and always been very welcomed, as have my family when they’ve visited. I’d be embarrassed for them if they felt any hostility.
I think I’d feel like most other Scottish people saying we have no problem with any tourists, especially English people, as long as they weren’t being rude.

I have found myself at the blunt end of some very rude people in England who still like to joke and ask questions about Scotland having electricity and refusing to take my cash. Wouldn’t hold it against England though and would just blame ignorant individuals.

I worked in a hotel in Fort William when I was 18 on my gap year. I lasted 6 weeks. Awful racism. It still upsets me when I think about it.

I have a Home Counties accent and spent almost every holiday in Cornwall or Norfolk and in fifty -seven years of visiting have never experienced any hostility at all in either county. Nor in North Yorkshire, but we stay with family there.

Some Scots have access to the telly and international news and everything .

So maybe they've moved past the hatred of the English just cos they're English .

Unless they're English tossers of course.

Shortcutsgalore · 15/07/2023 21:28

It's interesting that you're worrying about this. I doubt people are thinking much about where you're from 🤔

AreWeHated · 15/07/2023 21:32

@Shortcutsgalore it hadn’t crossed my mind till someone mentioned it to me. Hence why I asked the question. The anger in the answers has been interesting.

This thread is really fucking offensive, as if we're all parochial imbeciles who have never met an outsider.

SpeccyDoodler · 15/07/2023 21:34

None. HTH.

NannyGythaOgg · 15/07/2023 21:36

Two things

  1. Living there is different from visiting. If local people have had issues with other 'English' people living there, they may have issues with others. I have never, on numerous visits, been treated anything but courteously by Scottish people and I wouldn't expect to be. If I bought a property in Scotland and let it be known my reasons for buy was anything other than the friendliness and welcome by local people I would expect to be treated with distaste.
  2. I don't like the French in general and have, on occasion, had poor treatment whilst there BUT I don't have an issue with individuals who happen to be French, I have an issue with the few French people who have treated me poorly

I tried to make this point a few posts earlier but you said it better.

Chipsahoy · 15/07/2023 21:39

Huh? In English and live in Scotland. As do plenty of other English, American, Irish, Aussie etc that I’ve met. Never had any hostility.

Torven · 15/07/2023 21:39

Anti-englishness is real, just as secrarianism is (and indeed racism in general). Some people will find your voice annoying and probably your volume/perceived confidence.

But tbh that's life. Get over it and live your life.

TenOhSeven · 15/07/2023 21:39

If you're from the north of England, no-one hates you. It's the posh, arrogant southern English folk that we all think are wankers.

Torven · 15/07/2023 21:40

You know how some Brits hate Americans? It's a bit like that.

CallMeDiaz · 15/07/2023 21:40

The snarky follow up about 'angry' replies doesn't do you any favours either. If you goad people, expect people to feel goaded 🤷🏻‍♀️

SpikyHatePotato · 15/07/2023 21:41

I'm English and working in Scotland for 6 months. I've encountered plenty of banter, but no more than goes on between Scots.

Of course, if you're a tourist driving at 25 on a 60mph country road and don't pull in to let me past so I can get to work, I will be hating on you!

Of course they don't hate you I'm assuming it's a tourist town and folk are genuinely welcoming.

Diversion · 15/07/2023 21:41

None, We holiday in Scotland several times a year and everyone is lovely. they do sometimes comment on my (very broad) Lancashire accent and I get loads of complimentary comments about my purple hair, it matches the Scottish thistles

midsomermurderess · 15/07/2023 21:42

I think the question is, how pissed are you.

Nope. I'm a Scouser and was still called some pretty horrible names. Put me off ever going back and it was my first time away from home. Shame as its a beautiful country.

AreWeHated · 15/07/2023 20:59

I absolutely 100% do not align myself with any of that Westminster shit @albapunk I’m an unapologetic leftie from the English “provinces” that have been shafted by the tories as much as Scotland. I hope I come across just like that 🤷‍♀️

Have you been on the drink you are not Making much sense what are you on about wummin 😀
