So I’m English and I’m on holiday in Scotland. How much is everyone secretly hating me?

I’m in a small town in Scotland on holiday. I’m from the north of England. Everyone has been very polite and welcoming.

But, tell me the truth, how much secret hostility is there?

We've our fair share of idiots, like everywhere else does.
Our fair share of folk with a view at either extreme of a spectrum.
Our fair share of folk who can't see past their own opinion, and deem everyone else in some way "wrong".
Our fair share of folk who (perhaps reasonably) have an issue with the political establishment, but more unreasonably tar everyone with the same brush.

But most of us are decent judges of character and can see past stereoptypes.

Honestly I despair sometimes.

Tempting as it is to get a jibe in about the Scots Nats and their anti English sentiment, why are you even thinking about this whilst you are on holiday?

the majority of Scottish people voted to stay in the UK, tourism from England is big and welcome business, most Scots are friendly and welcoming to visitors so why the goady and insulting post?

Honestly I don't think English people realise that they are not liked by Scots (I am English btw)

Then enjoy our world-reknownworld friendliness, grab a dram and a pizza crunch and enjoy!

We go to Scotland every year and it's not even occurred to me whether there was any sort of hostility towards us because we're on the other side of the border.

I'd say none, unless you were behaving obnoxiously.

We don't dislike random English punters. It's the democracy gap and that fact that the English electorate obliterates our vote so that we've been stuck with a Tory government for 13 years that grates.

I am Scottish and I can honestly say I hate all people equally.

In all seriousness though, no Scottish people don’t hate the English. Stop drinking booze and get yourself some ginger. Definitely a proper morning roll and square sausage in the morning to sort your hangover. Then get over yourself and enjoy your holiday!

@AreWeHated Borderline offensive that you think we might all secretly hate everyone! We’re a really friendly bunch. We even accept your bank notes 😉😁 not like us visiting your lot 😂 If you ever experienced more than friendly banter here then I’d be quite shocked tbh!

Scottish here. If you weren’t liked believe me you’d know. We would make it clear regardless if you’re English or not.

I thought it was just Cornwall where we aren't welcome after all the threads during covid 🤣

Of course we support anyone playing England at football- it’s the law in Scotland 😂but zero it’s just banter!

I can honestly say I've never randomly hated an English person,and definitely not a tourist.

I once have I encountered unfriendliness and that was from drunk locals in aviemore in a pub (we had unwittingly sat at their usual table an hour before they came in, were half way through eating and they sat at our table ( there were empty tables) grabbed extra seats to crowd us more then took chips off my plate, asking them to (Politely) go away didn't work, I called over to the bar staff to help who refused. We left without finishing our food and didn't pay our food bill - left a stinking review on Tripadvisor too which the owner tried to have removed and failed. Intimidating or what! But every other person we met was lovely

Refusing to take your cash isn't personal. It is just that in some areas of England people don't often come across Scottish notes very often, so they don't know how to spot dodgy ones. In our small (rural, home counties) town a couple of years ago there was a spate of forged Scottish notes doing the rounds and several local businesses only found out when they tried to bank them. Because of that, they decided not to accept them any more.
