If you were a Mrs....

I've been Mrs for 30 odd years. It didn't occur to me not to be when I married, although I don't know if I'd do it again now.

I'm now a widow, still Mrs married name. Starting to think about dating. I'm not really a Mrs anymore, I'm not a Miss and maybe I shouldn't but I really don't like Ms. What am I supposed to call myself?

Tbf the title isn't used often, mostly on forms. I was just having a little wonder about what I'd do when checking into a hotel with a new man 😆

What is it that you don’t like about Ms?

I think there used to be a view that it was only used by divorced women, but that’s not really the case nowadays. I was Ms Nagado before I got married and I’m still Ms Nagado now.

I was a Mrs and now a Ms. You will just get used to it and start to see it for the liberation it is. You are yourself and not defined by a relationship status.

Tiqtaq · 14/07/2023 14:53

I just use Miss from birth til death

Beenhereforever1978 · 14/07/2023 14:55

I have always favoured "Baroness". 😊

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2023 14:55

If you were checking into a hotel with a new man they’d probably call you Mrs Hisname. I’ve been Ms Mybirthname all my life so I’m no help but I can’t see the issue with Ms.

Windercar · 14/07/2023 14:56

Ms as that’s what I am. What’s wrong with it?

Pootles34 · 14/07/2023 14:57

Retrain as a Dr - problem solved.

CJat10 · 14/07/2023 14:59

Unless you're a surgeon @Pootles34 !

prettybird · 14/07/2023 15:00

I've been a Ms since I was 18, shortly after arriving at Uni - over 40 years ago. Got married 25 years ago and neither changed my name which I like and is very distinctive Wink nor my title Grin

OneForTheRoadThen · 14/07/2023 15:04

I've always been a Ms. I'm married now but I'm sticking with Ms.

RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 14/07/2023 15:06

Ms - solves all the issues

Brefugee · 14/07/2023 15:08

just always introduce yourself as first name (and lastname if you want to be formal)

i have never, in 40 years of being married ever said "hi I'm Mrs Mylastname"

BitOutOfPractice · 14/07/2023 15:09

Was a Mrs. Got divorced and am now Ms. Kept married name as I’m known professionally as that. I too was sceptical about Ms at first but I rather like it now.

Hazelnuttella · 14/07/2023 15:10

I think if you have your husband’s surname, then Mrs makes sense.

I’m married but use Ms. I didn’t take my husband’s name, so “Mrs maiden name” wouldn’t make sense.

I like Ms personally.

Screamingabdabz · 14/07/2023 15:10

I always use Ms for when I’m uncertain about marital status when I’m dealing with parents of children in my job. I don’t assume divorced - it’s because I can’t assume married. Are you allowed to make titles up? If so I definitely would!

RachelNoire · 14/07/2023 15:11

Ms is a perfect equivalent to Mr

I don’t understand why many women seem to hate it

Miss seems insulting and I hate Mrs!

Twizbe · 14/07/2023 15:15

I’d keep Mrs. I don’t like the sound of Ms.

FeigningConcern · 14/07/2023 15:16

Just stay as Mrs if you prefer it. My DM stayed as Mrs ex-husband's name after they divorced as she wanted the same name as me, preferred Mrs (still a lot of single mum stigma back then), and didn't like her maiden name! Do whatever you like!

CountFoscoHasMiceInHisPocket · 14/07/2023 15:16

I love the neutrality of Ms although tbh I only very rarely say it aloud, just select it when filling in a form.

Retrain as a Dr - problem solved.

Or a vicar

JaninaDuszejko · 14/07/2023 15:17

Widowed is not the same as divorced. All the widows I know have continued to be called 'Mrs X', that is their name. If you want to change to Ms though that's fine, it's up to you.

I have a PhD so I've always been Dr Duszejko.

I don't like Ms. It's a weird word/non-word that's more like a sound, that I find hard to say with my surname.

I am a widow,still Mrs.I don’t like Ms.

I’m rather tempted by “Countess”

I might opt for colonel in future 😬
