BBC Presenter and yet more allegations

1000 replies

friendlycat · 11/07/2023 23:28

It would appear that the front page of tomorrow’s The Sun has further allegations about messages with a new 17 year old. Creepy hearts etc

Scrolling through Sky news and seeing front pages of the papers. This appears bottom right on The Sun front page.

you do feel for those reading on bbc news, Lucy Manning, having to speak carefully

Comment on Twitter:

”As you try to make sense of the current media obsession do not forget that most of the papers covering it want to destroy the BBC because they either see it as a media rival or as an obstacle to the Foxisation of TV news”.

This is exactly right, hence the drip feed of vague insinuations, none of which appear to be criminal, and not naming the presenter to maximise public interest and suspicion. I don’t think the BBC is helping itself either, by making this the lead story on every news broadcast (as it does every time it’s reporting on itself). A man acted like a creep- hardly the first time. It’s right that it’s being investigated but it’s not the most important story in the world.

That said, I don’t believe for a moment that any of this is connected to the GO story.

This thread is absolutely amazing - it beggars belief that there could be so many legitimate mumsnet users so vehemently on the side of the unnamed presenter. Something very strange is going on here - I suspect people are being paid to defend him, denigrate the Sun and obfuscate the story in online forums like this one.

I agree.

Saying that the threatening messages which were seen and verified by BBC news are 'mean' is trivialising to say the least. And the more young people that come forward with allegations the more they dismiss the presenters behaviour it's baffling. Are they being paid to defend him or are they friends and family members, or are they men who share his hobby 🤔

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/07/2023 02:29

the second has said the presenter sent mean messages when he had hinted he would name the presenter online

If I connected with someone on a dating app and they pestered me after I decided not to meet up, I'd just block them so they couldn't bother me. I wouldn't threaten to out them. It seems odd to me.

If he's committed an illegal act then action should be taken, no question. Meanwhile one allegation in the e mail about GO is incredibly serious and being totally ignored.

Exactly. I assume we are talking of a dating site that is more for hock-ups rather than long term relationships? They are both on it and know why they are on it. To threaten to out someone because you realise they are well known is not on.

Meadowfly · 12/07/2023 06:48

Soothing - a creepy man sending another adult an unpleasant message isn’t the most important thing going on in the world!!

Beefcurtains79 · 12/07/2023 06:49

Plenty of crisis PR firms now offer to ‘present a different narrative on social media’ if you are taking a battering.
I assume they’ve been in overdrive, particularly at night so they can flood whole threads with little opposition.

Either that’s happened, or many posters on Mumsnet would simply see a sleazy old (posh) man excused and his victims demonised, rather than admit the Sun newspaper were correct.
I really hope it’s the former.

Juanmartinez · 12/07/2023 06:50

The story about Boris Johnson should be getting more publicity but I don't understand why people don't believe the BBC presenter story, the BBC themselves have seen the threatening messages. It's also not surprising that more people are coming forward , it's a bit of a stretch to think that the presenter has only done this to one person.

True, you’d hope it’s the former but many invested in the latter, any deflection goes. So many apologists on a thread

Soothingaftersun · 12/07/2023 06:55

Exactly. People can discuss GO, Boris and how much they hate Tories and the Sun on a number of different threads. This thread is about the BBC Presenter

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 11/07/2023 23:43

I was believing this for a moment until I re-read that the SUN has spoken to a fourth girl

Here's me thinking it was the POLICE!!

So it's all 100%true? 🤔

Does it actually say a girl this time?

pinklama · 12/07/2023 06:58

Unless anything illegal has happened this needs to be dropped and handled internally by the BBC. Whilst it is probably selling loads of newspapers it is the gutter journalism which encourages the tabloid press to hack phones and intrude on (innocent) people's lives.

Don't understand how a man who can afford £35grand on this cannot find a more discrete way to fund his fetish.

Meadowfly · 12/07/2023 06:59

I’m not a bot, I do believe the story, and just don’t think it’s bad enough to warrant a frenzied, obsessive witch-hunt.

khw666 · 12/07/2023 06:59

I'm just a normal mum and not paid by anyone.

Old man sent/received pictures and sent money to a younger man. Investigation says younger man was over the legal age to send/receive these images.

Yep it is sleazy due to the age gap but what is the crime here?

Meadowfly · 12/07/2023 07:00

Quite khw.

Meadowfly · 12/07/2023 07:01

Those of you in a righteous frenzy are the ones being manipulated imo.

I am finding it extremely worrying.

While I hate the Sun the apologists are really bizarre. It's not just an emoji. The allegation is texting an unknown 17 year old hearts which if anyones partner did. I hope they would find creepy not normal. It's not normal in my world.

User10486743 · 12/07/2023 07:01

It will probably end up that the only crime was breaking lockdown

Beefcurtains79 · 12/07/2023 07:02

So the story should be dropped should it? The ‘crackhead’ victims shouldn’t be believed, and we should all go back to respecting a posh old man who gets his kicks from wanking off to degrading photos of young people? Then acting sanctimonious AF when doing their day job?
Gotcha.

Meadowfly · 12/07/2023 07:02

No one is saying it’s not creepy or normal. But if young people are on dating sites it’s not really surprising!

I don't think it's necessarily to do with a crime.
The BBC has an image to uphold, especially in the job he's in. If it is the person we think he announces and talks the nation through our biggest national events. They can't have someone sleazy in that role.

Soothingaftersun · 12/07/2023 07:03

Zonder · 12/07/2023 06:57

I don't think it says either gender. If it did say from a girl it would appear less likely to be genuine as it doesn't fit the profile

Willmafrockfit · 12/07/2023 07:04

he wont be going back to work that's for sure

Beefcurtains79 · 12/07/2023 07:08

I don’t care if a crimes been committed? I don’t want my license fee paying the wages of sleazy old pervs who take advantage of vulnerable young people and drug addicts.
Constantly repeating that a crime hasn’t been committed is a pretty low bar isn’t it? But I guess it’s the only defence really, - other than demonising the victims, being that they have no fame, and appear to be from less enviable demographics.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/07/2023 23:39

The sun will be seeking out and paying £££ to keep their crap story alive.

So fucking what he sent some emojis to someone. The first person doesn't want to proceed with anything, the second has said the presenter sent mean messages when he had hinted he would name the presenter online, the Third met up with him, the 4th received some emojis.

Fuck me. This is such a load of nonsense

agree from what I have seen of the evidence so far.
Meanwhile folk continue to pile on.
do they have nothing else to do?

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/07/2023 07:09

This is a witch hunt by social media. The Sun is hardly the nation's moral guardian. They've deliberately run with this story close to the Beeb's annual report being released. If they have evidence of criminality they should go to the police.

It beggars belief that now the latest 'revelation' is that the presenter tried to meet someone during a COVID lockdown. What a bunch of hypocrites at the Sun. One of the people who allegedly met the presenter on a dating app sounds like they were trying to blackmail him.

Some people won't be satisfied until the person is publicly outed and the BBC forced to sack him. The Sun is grubbing around for some, any, evidence of criminal behaviour.

Whatever you may think about any of this, there appears to be no evidence of criminal behaviour. It's allegations and a smear campaign.
