BBC Presenter and yet more allegations

1000 replies

friendlycat · 11/07/2023 23:28

It would appear that the front page of tomorrow’s The Sun has further allegations about messages with a new 17 year old. Creepy hearts etc

Scrolling through Sky news and seeing front pages of the papers. This appears bottom right on The Sun front page.

@SerafinasGoose - are you saying that depression never plays a part in people seeking out meaningless sexual encounters or engaging in risky and self destructive behaviours?

It may do, but there's still such a thing as personal responsibility.

Northernsouloldies · 12/07/2023 19:23

Going to the sun was a bad idea, of course they were going to run the story, the one that said he got a nasty txt I'm sorry but that just screams I smell money, what teenager hasn't received or sent a nasty txt and maybe underage want to stay off 18+dating sites if they don't want creepy fuckers contacting them and then they can swipe till they get an age appropriate match n not grandad.

I feel for his wife and kids this must have been horrific. I also feel for the victim too, there are no winners here and they’ve since come out and said the reports are “rubbish”. It’s a mess and everyone is suffering. Don’t think it was wise to go to the Sun by the parents that the last thing I’d think to do and they’ve a history of lies that paper.

I disagree with your last sentence.

Neither the police nor the BBC took the parent's complaint seriously. I cannot imagine how devastating that would be. It was a good idea to go to the Sun because it was then taken seriously and other people have come forward as well.

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2023 19:23

Lacucuracha · 12/07/2023 19:18

But they wanted their parents to know.

And you know this how? They asked The Sun not to publish this story and opined that the allegations are rubbish. They’ve done their utmost to distance themselves from it.

It looks like the Edwards are being very well advised if the reaction on here is anything to
go by. Suddenly we are all supposed to be worried about Huw. If he is in a shit state quite frankly he only has himself to blame. Let this be a lesson to other privileged men.

It's a bigger issue than this. It's a bigger issue than the media, or the BBC.

Part of it's the age-old dynamic of the establishment closing ranks to protect the sexual proclivities of privileged, powerful men. And that includes powerful entertainment industries and the curse of celebrity.

part of it's the fact that victims cannot trust the police - and with good reason - as they are the establishment. They are part of the whole clandestine, rugsweeping dynamic and also preserve a system primarily set up to benefit men.

And the only ones who can be relied on not to rugsweep, are the salacious gutter-press. What sort of a society are we that the free press - and all the evils they come with - are the only ones calling predatory males to account?

Huw Edwards is almost incidental to this shitshow - he's just the latest in a long line of similar males. And in the wake of #MeToo, and all the shocking stories emerging in its wake, nothing has changed.

Something's definitely rotten in the state.

bitnervousaboutthis · 12/07/2023 19:25

I don't get the amount of people saying the parents shouldn't have gone to the Sun, what else should they have done? They reported it to the police and the BBC and nothing happened. The only thing that matters to big organisations is reputation, it's not surprising things only stated happening with this matter when the parents when to the Sun

toomuchlaundry · 12/07/2023 19:26

@bitnervousaboutthis the police have looked again and said there is no evidence of criminal activity. What do you expect them to do. You can’t be charged for being sleazy

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2023 19:26

And how has going to The Sun benefited these amazing estranged parents? They’re worse off than they were before. It’s the end of any hope of a relationship with their child.

Translucentwaters · 12/07/2023 19:28

If the parents can prove the age of the child when Edwards payments were allegedly made for images, I hope they will go very public with all of their evidence.

At the moment this looks like a hatchet job on the parents/victims. The whole thing being buried as fast as possible whilst Edwards is out of the picture and ‘recovering’.

Well I doubt Huw will be sending their son drug money now 🤷🏻‍♀️

DaisyQuakeJohnson · 12/07/2023 19:29

The usual posters are still pretending this was all about the Sun and ignoring that the BBC, Sky, The Guardian, etc, all ran with the story. The BBC confirmed the incident with the abusive text messages - not the Sun. But why let facts get in the way of trying to defend a wealthy man.

Ironically, just a few pages back I said the best thing he could do was admit it was him, say he'd co-operate with the investigations, apologies all round and then go to the priory, etc, for support. And here we are.

I hope the BBC do investigate thoroughly. I'm not even convinced that HE won't come back from this. Look at all the 'famous', wealthy men who get caught in scandals, bring their companies into disrepute - they say they're sorry; disappear for a few months and then slowly reintegrate back into their careers. I doubt he'll be as high profile again but I wouldn't bet on his career being finished.

I have every sympathy for his wife and children; and the young people involved in this, and even his colleagues who were dragged into it too.

SerafinasGoose · 12/07/2023 19:30

QueefQueen80s · 12/07/2023 19:11

@Lacucuracha Yep still shocked at the apologists for him here.. maybe we have a few older men with similar abhorrent behaviour posting.

This is why victims are too afraid to speak.

If #MeToo was revealing of anything, it wasn't the horrific scale of the epidemic of sexual assaults against women. That was depressingly predictable.

It was the immediate cries of

'shut up, it makes us uncomfortable' (so we are to blame for talking about it), 'why are you speaking so many years after the event?' (you don't understand the effects of trauma),
'stop jumping on the bandwagon!' (safety in numbers gives victims an opportunity to speak),
'they're only after money!' (incomprehensible),
'men won't dare even to speak to women they meet in public soon!' (fucking good show).

Southeastdweller · 12/07/2023 19:32

Try again. It’s very likely that the images were bought on Only Fans, and you have to provide photo ID that verifies you’re 18 or above to join as a creator.

Calliecaterpillar · 12/07/2023 19:33

I don't like the manipulation into feel sorry and support Huw.

When you have a career like that, it's pure arrogance to think it won't be a shitstorm - even if it turned out to be gay dating sites and he wasn't aware of the 17yr olds age. He has reported on stories similar to what he found himself in - he has had years and years to know exactly how the media and public perception operates plus all the training that goes with it. He absolutely knows had he been messaging men in their 30s/40s it would have been less of a headline

The BBC knows had they taken the complaint more seriously at the first time they were contacted they could've released a statement on Friday saying we've investigated, found no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing and therefore the investigation is over and we fully back Huw and he's back on screens on Monday

I don't wish mental health crisis on anybody but I do wish accountability on them.

pintery · 12/07/2023 19:33

So - man cheats on wife (I guess), makes decisions incompatible with his employer's values (I guess), does nothing illegal and is hounded to the point of admission to a psychiatric hospital by the Sun and the moronic public. Several other lives ruined. Well done all those on here comparing this to Savile, or posting about abuse of minors, grooming, illegal underage photos, "nonce", apologists, "depraved behaviour" etc. Rupert Murdoch will be really pleased with you. What a glorious day.

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2023 19:33

The parents went to The Sun. The Sun broke the story. They knew perfectly well that it f they’d taken it to any other news outlet they’d have been shown the door.

CaramelMac · 12/07/2023 19:34

I think the first young person was blackmailing him, the selling images was a story they told their mum to explain the money.

I don’t agree. But if true that shows how bad things are when the parents last resort is a trashy tabloid newspaper.

I very much disagree with his choices personally. But if he hasn't done anything illegal then he should be allowed to deal with his personal relationships however he chooses to. He should not have been forced to expose all of this to the entire public, just like every other cheat.

I also think he should be allowed to continue his work, I know people will say technically he can. But we all know he's never going to be allowed to move on. Like Angus Deayton, he's never going to be allowed by the tabloids and society to just get on with what he's good at. Huw read the news, that's what he should be judged on. Not who he legally showed his bum to, legally bought porn from or argued with on WhatsApp.

Unless we treat all cheaters and johns like this then he shouldn't be treated like this.

Unless we treat all cheaters and johns like this then he shouldn't be treated like this.

The flip side of that is that condoning/turning a blind eye to that behaviour in favour people role models that it's acceptable for all men.

It's very sad for his family that he is in hospital. But a 60 year old trawling dating sites for 18 year olds is really not and shouldn't be acceptable.
