BBC Presenter and yet more allegations

1000 replies

friendlycat · 11/07/2023 23:28

It would appear that the front page of tomorrow’s The Sun has further allegations about messages with a new 17 year old. Creepy hearts etc

Scrolling through Sky news and seeing front pages of the papers. This appears bottom right on The Sun front page.

And who are those writing and investigating the news? No one knows.
Because they are faceless.

Some presenters are the ‘face’ of BBC - such as the one caught up in this scandal. They naturally carry power, influence and authority and it’s the abuse of this power that is most disturbing.

It would also be impossible for the presenter to report on any other scandal without looking a bit hypocritical.

I find the assumption that some privileged man can go philandering as he pleases regardless of the fact that he has a wife, children and high profile career, while posturing as a churchgoer/Christian, quite disturbing and depressing. The people defending this individual would be more at home in a previous era. They're really not the progressives they think they are. Their attitudes just enable disgusting male sexual entitlement.

The people salivating and speculating would also be at home in a previous era - the one where people took knitting to executions by guillotine.

Translucentwaters · 12/07/2023 08:39

LemonTT · 12/07/2023 08:31

yes but who is driving the bus and who is doing the throwing.

The bus is driven by The Sun who deliberately stirred up a media feeding frenzy. The ones doing the throwing are those mindlessly speculating with nothing but hate and bigotry to back it up.

What on earth are you talking about?

At the centre of this storm are CHILDREN.

In the case of the first alleged victim a very vulnerable minor. How this gets exposed is totally irrelevant. The exposure started with two very worried parents, who were not listened to by the bbc.

You seem unable to grasp the gravity of the situation. This is not about the press or the Sun at the centre of this is a very vulnerable teenager, and now many more that have potentially been harmed and damaged by a very powerful man that is paid by you and I.

I am just appalled that my license fee money has been spent on the abuse of minors seemingly. I am sickened actually.

TheReverendBeeb · 12/07/2023 08:39

@Meadowfly - do you have a 17 yr old DC? Because I do, and as much as they like to think of themselves as grown up they are really not. And it is absolutely disgusting to think of my DC being approached by a man in late middle age for anything vaguely sexual.

Flippertyfeckerty · 12/07/2023 08:08

Meh, they “claim” - we’ve yet to see actual evidence of anything!!!! Journalism at its most rotten… but it is the Scum🤷🏼‍♀️.

BBC news reported that they (BBC news) have seen "threatening" messages to one of the youths, from the presenter's known phone number. That allegation and mention of evidence is from BBC news, not The Sun.

It funny that ideas of identity and expressing your real true self are held up as brilliant (see Schofield's coming out)

But the lives of the family, friends and colleagues that are trashed in the process are fair game in this progressive idea.

It really is depressing. If you want to do things that hurt people around you, own them, take responsibility.

The being sainted for shitty behaviour whilst building a career on a different squeaky clean perfect reputation is just not cool anymore. It's 2023 - be honest about it without the sneaky bit in the middle.

Zonder · 12/07/2023 08:42

Absolutely agree @RedToothBrush

Meadowfly · 12/07/2023 08:44

Thereverend - yes it’s completely repellent. If my dc was addicted to drugs and using the sex industry to fund it I’d be worried out of my mind, and I’d loathe the people exploiting them. I wouldn’t go to the sun though!!

Catstaps · 12/07/2023 08:46

He should make a statement apologising to the bbc , viewers and his family. He’s in a very privileged position, earning a lot of money and one of the main faces of the bbc. He’s acted appallingly and should resign immediately. Shame on him, a lot of viewers feel very let down by this, I know I do.

ItsMyAeroplane · 12/07/2023 01:56

I don’t care who it is, but it’s not fucking ok to groom/approach/ pay young people to take and send explicit photos to another person.

I don’t care if it’s not illegal, it is immoral.

I don’t care if he’s famous, or not. MEN need to be called out on their shit and the world needs to know who they really are.

The more men publicly humiliated, and losing their jobs over exploiting young people, the better. Hopefully others will check themselves.

If it is who we think it is, the job requires a certain level of trust and decorum. The person is there to get the nation through tough times. You need integrity.
I don’t want to listen to a person in that role knowing they’ve broken marriage vows and are having online affairs with people 40+ younger. Some of which may have occurred under the age of consent to do so.
I’d judge a male friend of my if he did it at my age, let alone 60+ and in that job.

I agree with this. Have been hoping it wasn't him as he's someone I have always admired.

Panama2 · 12/07/2023 08:51

Why is there such an outcry over this when the grooming gangs which is still going on hardly covered.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/07/2023 08:52

Ger1atricMillennial · 12/07/2023 01:02

Two things can be true at once

  1. Another older wealthy influential public figure who is allegedly choosing to use that influence and wealth to satisfy whatever particular itch they are trying to scratch. Seedy and untrustworthy? Sure. Harmful? Possibly. Illegal? Looking less and less likely to be true.
  1. The Sun newspaper (as part of News UK) choosing to cast a hopeful fishing line, into the pond of wealthy older public figures by publishing a half-researched incomplete story; with many moving parts as a way of a) damaging the reputation of its rival and b) deflecting the behaviour of employees of the same media organisation ... i.e. Boris Johnson

The BBC is a mess but as a news organisation that have far superior standards to that of the News Corp (Rupert Murdochs group that owns News UK).

Superior standards that cultivated a culture of looking the other way whilst staggeringly entitled male star talent abused young girls and boys for decades in the era when the Sun was publishing its leery pictures of topless 16 year olds.

The BBC lost all moral highground in that era and even if the young people in this story were the "right" side of legal at 18, its wholly inappropriate behaviour and if its not against BBC codes of conduct it certainly should be (not least due to reputational damage).

The Sun will be chasing examples because the story sells. Johnson writes for the Mail which is not part of News Corp.

Unicorn34 · 12/07/2023 08:52

I obviously don't agree with older adults contacting younger people for anything to do with sex, BUT .... surely the websites that the boys were originally on had an 18+ rule and the people who visit the sites don't ask to see a birth certificate, so must believe that the person is over 18? If someone lies about their age on a site, surely that's the issue? Not saying that the BBC presenter is right doing what he/she did, but there also must be a case for the young person lying about their age to be on the site in the first place? Nothing like the alleged grooming by a recent adult presenter by taking a child out to restaurants etc knowing full well how old they were?

TheReverendBeeb · 12/07/2023 08:52

No I probably wouldn't either @Meadowfly but if I had tried their employers and the police and had no response them maybe out of desperation I would go to a newspaper.

I appreciate what the presenter has been accused of may not be technically illegal but my god it's morally abhorrent and if they are a high profile BBC employee then it does matter in my eyes. These people are paid extremely well from the public purse and this is not simply an extra marital affair. Anyone who thinks that it's fine for middle aged men to be approaching very young adults and retaining the privileges of their public position is condoning such behaviour.

Yes agree he needs to face up to it and make a statement now. He tried his best to make it all go away, it looked like it might on Monday but that ship has sailed.

KingJamesTheTurd · 12/07/2023 08:15

Whoever this presenter is, it's bloody weird to hero-worship someone just because you've seen them on telly, and to have your faith in humanity destroyed because someone you don't know and will never meet might have done something unpleasant.

My mum has a long standing crush on said presenter. She’s talking about writing to him to tell him how sorry she feels for him and how upset she is 🤷‍♀️🙄

Southeastdweller · 12/07/2023 08:55

We don’t even know he knew one of the people was 17, do we? The first allegation? I’m referring to. Something that’s been forgotten about in the MN hysteria about this in the last few days.

LaffTaff · 12/07/2023 08:57

The BBC says it has evidence of threatening messages, and there is evidence of a pattern of behaviour.

I've not been following this story particularly closely, but I'm surprised to see (skimming this thread) people defending the presenter's position.

You might if no one else was listening.
I hate the Sun but I’d sell my soul to help my dc.

It’s surely not an either/or situation.

All men should be held accountable for these actions. If some are being ignored, for whatever reason, it doesn’t mean others should get away with vile behaviour.

Catstaps · 12/07/2023 09:00

I think a lot of people have watched him over the years and felt warmth towards him. He’s reported on such major events and been the face we’ve seen and heard for so many years. You felt he was respectable and trustworthy, that was his persona. To now be told otherwise is upsetting, I feel very let down by him.

Unclecornelius · 12/07/2023 09:01

Just imagine the BBC when picking presenters for important events.
Oh we don’t want the likes of Ricky Gervais, far too risqué.
We’ll have someone with gravitas, a serious journalist!

lapisamethyst · 12/07/2023 09:01

It's distasteful but private imo.
If it's 'who' I think it is then that's really disappointing.
