I always think oranges (big ones not satsumas) aren't worth the effort so rarely buy them, but when I do have one I wonder why I don't buy them more often.

charabang · 11/07/2023 08:16

Seafood. Smells great but way too labour intensive. All that cracking, shelling, picking. Not for me!

BarrelOfOtters · 11/07/2023 08:20

I have a friend who grew up in a seafood eating nation. She can methodically work her way through a lobster and fruit de mer and it’s an education. We had a waiter congratulating her more than once on her skill and dexterity….nothing left at all apart from shells. And she doesn’t have bits flying everywhere.

Yes, oranges, had some sliced oranges in a restaurant on holiday as an afters, free on the house sort of thing. Just delicious and easy….

look at them in the supermarket and think I can’t be arsed.

Spaghetti. Chicken wings. King prawns you have to peel
Yourself. Ribs.

EversoDetermined · 11/07/2023 10:56

I made croissants once. Never again, they were fine but no better than bakery ones and such a lot of effort.

Davros · 11/07/2023 10:56

Fruit in general. I can't be doing with skin, pips, cores, pith

whatsmynameaga1n · 11/07/2023 10:57

Making your own pastry over buying jus-rol or whatever it’s called.

Very little is too much effort for me to eat however!

AuntieJune · 11/07/2023 11:03

Filo pastry. 'Brush 10 sheets with melted butter' no thanks.

BarrelOfOtters · 11/07/2023 11:21

yeah, I thought about making cinnamon rolls once - I'm sure they'd have been lovely but the ones from the bakery round the corner, while criminally expensive, are so nice anyway.

Making your own lasagne. So labour intensive.

Coronationstation · 11/07/2023 11:26

To make yourself - fish pie and lasagne. Too many different pans and dishes to wash up and there's decent ready made versions.
Ditto millionaires shortbread.

Fingerlimes · 11/07/2023 11:27

Globe artichokes! Get them in my organic veg box delivery sometimes. Just CBA for such a small amount of food. I put them in the compost bin and hope they help something sensible to grow next year. 😯

For me those are food that ARE worth the effort.

Not worth the effort are stuff like
Canned spaghetti hoops. They taste awful and sugary can make much nicer myself. Yes takes more time but worth the effort.

keepmovingon · 11/07/2023 11:29

Artichokes I buy in a jar from Costco. I made cinnamon buns once delicious but never again. I bought half a lobster and got nothing from it will stick with the tails only from now on.

TheresBoozeInTheBlender · 11/07/2023 11:34

Who makes their own spaghetti hoops?! 🤣 that's definitely too much faff!

I don't find lasagne an effort at all.

MrsHsGirl · 11/07/2023 11:38

Homemade custard or puff pastry.

My MIL was an absolutely wonderful home cook but was mortified when she realised I had gone to the effort of making my own custard 'when the shop bought stuff is just so good'

CornishGem1975 · 11/07/2023 11:38

I made hot cross buns once, they were delicious but not really much better than shop bought and took a good 12 hours of faffing and proving.

Hiphopopotamus · 11/07/2023 11:40

Risotto! All that careful ladling of stock bit by bit for hours just to end up with some ok flavoured rice

Beamur · 11/07/2023 11:41

Roast dinner. Better in the pub. Unless the potatoes are disappointing.

Do you mean custard made with raw eggs and slowly stirred on top of a pan of boiling water, adding milking a tiny bit at a time? Yes, a right old faff and I've only done it once in my life.

If you mean using Birds custard powder, then its 2 mins in the microwave.

Tinned custard is bloody awful. Far too sweet.

Westfacing · 11/07/2023 11:45

Lasagne - such a faff! I haven't made it for years since the children grew up, and only once for the grandchildren.

I now make myself a low-carb one with roasted veg instead of the pasta, and the sauce is a tub of full fat yoghurt, mixed with grated cheddar, 2 eggs, and parmesan spread on top, no pesky layers!

Enko · 11/07/2023 11:46

That's the point I'm making, isn't it? What's faff for one is for another for another is making it better nicer and very much worth the effort.

I will say I don't make my own spaghetti hoops I make spaghetti dishes instead. I do not get the obsession with spaghetti hoops I think they are vile and even using a tin opener and heating them up for me is WAY to much effort for something vile. I still accept that other people like them.

MrsHsGirl · 11/07/2023 11:46

@thenightsky yes the first one - I spent hours perfecting it trying to impress lovely MIL 😂

I didn't even know custard powder was a thing!

Maddy70 · 11/07/2023 11:46

Lasagne
Lobster
