Homemade pies /Cornish pasties.

The fraff with the making own pastry etc is a lot.

viques · 11/07/2023 12:42

Pomegranates. Delicious, and I have tried all the you tube hacks known to woman, but still end up with my kitchen looking like a badly run abattoir. I buy them in nice little plastic boxes now.

Making your own lasagne. So labour intensive.

First time I made a small lasagna from scratch and I was astonished at the amount of time it took. Never again.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 11/07/2023 12:49

I made soup at the weekend for the first time in a while. And was reminded why I don’t bother. Straight forward, but sooooo time consuming. Grating, slicing, sautéing, sweating, simmering, blending, yada, yada.

Especially when you can get a zillion and one lovely flavours at the shop, and it takes mins to heat up.

Risotto is definitely worth the effort. I find them super easy and not much effort anyway.

Me too, risotto is really not much effort at all. And I love varying the flavors as it suits me.

Spanielsarepainless · 11/07/2023 12:51

I make risotto in the microwave. Think it's a BBC recipe. Takes 30 minutes with minimal stirring. I wouldn't make it for my Italian SIL!

rabbithousesandplants · 11/07/2023 12:52

roast dinners. Love them but they take way too long and use too many cooking pots/pans etc. And a restaurant roast is no where near as nice as a home cooked roast

Ohitsajollyholiday · 11/07/2023 12:53

Most of those mentioned already, though I quite enjoy making and eating risotto.

I can’t stand making pancakes and waffles - such a faff, takes forever to serve everyone and really unsociable cooking one or two at a time 😓

ColonelPuffPuffPuff · 11/07/2023 13:00

Made a pork pie from scratch once…will never get that time back!

Ditto…Scotch Eggs

Ditto….Oxtail stew

always buy lasagne, too much faff to make my own

Hocuspocusnonsense · 11/07/2023 13:00

Pretty much everything at the moment.

ive decided that homemade pancakes, a nice tub of soup, cheese and crackers and boiled egg and toast counts as homemade dinner.

My children eat all of the above so why bother to spend an hour making a ‘proper dinner’ that they push around the plate and leave.

AbsolutelyNebulous · 11/07/2023 13:00

Hummus, pesto, mayo. Pretty much any condiment type type food.

People claim Ooh, it only takes minutes and costs pennies but the individual ingredients are often expensive and you only get the economies of scale if you’re eating tonnes of the stuff for days in a row! Not to mention faffing about with a food processor and having to clean the bloody thing. Nope, can’t be arsed.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 11/07/2023 13:04

puff pastry, globe artichokes

I do make croissants, crumpets, bread, lasagne, risotto, fish pie. They are worth the effort to me compared to what I can buy locally but that says more about my local shops then anything else.

Carpediem15 · 11/07/2023 13:07

Instant Pot electric pressure cooker makes and easy "dump and go" Risotto. Made a salmon one at weekend and guests were impressed and thought I had spent ages making it - probably about 20 mins from start to finish,
Dean Edwards made a microwave one on TV last week and it looked so easy to make and other people on there could not believe he had made it in there.
Fish pie is something I wouldn't buy again, not found one with enough fish in it.

ThreadExterminator · 11/07/2023 13:07

Whole full-size sardines. Ordered in France with frites once and it was a trial trying to work around the bones.

WRT risotto, I know it's not the proper way but I pour all the stock in at once and only stir every five minutes ish.

Made pesto once. A Jamie Oliver recipe but was overpowering in the amount of Parmesan he said to use. That was a waste of time and effort.

Do you mean custard made with raw eggs and slowly stirred on top of a pan of boiling water, adding milking a tiny bit at a time? Yes, a right old faff and I've only done it once in my life.

If you mean using Birds custard powder, then its 2 mins in the microwave.

Tinned custard is bloody awful. Far too sweet.

The BBC recipe for custard is so easy and pretty much the same time as heating up milk for birds custard, and so much better! Just all in one pan and stir. I use all milk rather than cream and it's still good. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/homemade-custard

Moonlightdust · 11/07/2023 13:11

100% butternut squash. It will sit for weeks and weeks in my fruit bowl untouched because I just can’t be bothered to peel it.

BumWhisperers · 11/07/2023 13:12

Most things for me, I really dislike cooking and take as many shortcuts as possible. I do however love doing a roast and a risotto

Britinme · 11/07/2023 13:12

I'm with @ThreadExterminator on the way to make risotto. Also works if you bung it in the oven.

Most of the time I can't be arsed to make curry sauce. Pataks is fine, thanks.

OTOH I think roast dinner is a really easy meal so I don't mind that at all.

Lasagne - such a faff! I haven't made it for years since the children grew up, and only once for the grandchildren.

I now make myself a low-carb one with roasted veg instead of the pasta, and the sauce is a tub of full fat yoghurt, mixed with grated cheddar, 2 eggs, and parmesan spread on top, no pesky layers!

I like the sound of your dish, but without lasagne sheets, mince and tomato sauce and white/cheese sauce it is missing a few vital parts of an actual lasagne!

UseOfWeapons · 11/07/2023 13:13

Agree with croissants and hot cross buns, giant faff. Ditto crab apple or quince jelly. Mad them once, never again.

BarrelOfOtters · 11/07/2023 13:14

Now soup is easy and worth the effort and uses up stuff in the fridge.

100% butternut squash. It will sit for weeks and weeks in my fruit bowl untouched because I just can’t be bothered to peel it.

That's why I only buy the frozen kind, peeled and cut into squares.

One thing you CAN do is just pop the whole thing in the oven and slow roast.

@ pp

To clean a food processor just pour in some warm water, a drop of washing up liquid, then turn it on. Then it's less hard work to clean.

Keykat · 11/07/2023 13:15

Proper lasagne is a day long exercise. Then it's best to leave the cooked and cooled thing in the fridge to eat next day. Far too much faff, and too many dishes to clean, and the kitchen is like a bomb site too.

But I have a quick version that does the job. Round dish. Tortilla rounds instead of lasagne sheets, sauce (can be made and frozen in batches), Ricotta cheese + seasoning for white sauce. Layer up, cook. Gorgeous.

TheresBoozeInTheBlender · 11/07/2023 11:34

Who makes their own spaghetti hoops?! 🤣 that's definitely too much faff!

I don't find lasagne an effort at all.

Of you use jars it's easy but if you make your sauces it's a complete pain
