Oh and mangoes.. how does anyone get them out of their skins and away from their stones without making a phenomenal mess

LunaNorth · 11/07/2023 12:14

Fresh mango. You have to strip naked and stand in the bath for the sake of about four lumps of mango.

AblationQ · 11/07/2023 12:14

Sushi

LunaNorth · 11/07/2023 12:14

X-post Grin

Catspyjamas17 · 11/07/2023 12:14

Yeah I think lasagne and moussaka are pretty easy (though a little time consuming) but the Aldi special selection lasagne has rendered making home made pointless.

Rogue1001MNer · 11/07/2023 12:17

I was also going to say pomegranate.

And wet walnuts

And unfiletted fish

changeforthebetternottheworse · 11/07/2023 12:21

Lasagne if it's a bog standard beef one, but I do make a seafood one from time to time.
Samosas. Nice, but there's a shop near me that sells amazing home made ones so I rarely make my own.

Wexone · 11/07/2023 12:21

@MrsHsGirl you can buy large cartons of custard in Aldi (tastes great) for like 50 cents why go to all the hassle of making it from scratch or even the powder one

I made croissants once. Never again, they were fine but no better than bakery ones and such a lot of effort.

I made crumpets once. Huge effort and mess involved and crumpets in the supermarket are cheap enough not to bother again.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/07/2023 12:25

Risotto
Lobster
Crab
Artichokes
Pastry
Breaded chicken

All the ones people mentioned. I'm going to confess too that I really like Idaho packet mash!!

Catspyjamas17 · 11/07/2023 12:27

Risotto is definitely worth the effort. I find them super easy and not much effort anyway.

Catspyjamas17 · 11/07/2023 12:27

Shortcrust pastry is also extremely easy to make from scratch.

hexsnidgett · 11/07/2023 11:49

Lasagne is totally worth it, I have never had a bought one that was as good as mine.
I made crumpets once, really not worth it.

Snap! on the crumpets! Definitely not worth it no matter how easy Paul Hollywood made it look!

Irequireausername · 11/07/2023 12:29

Pasta and custard is easy. Risotto in a pressure cooker is very easy. Mayo is easy with a blender.

Croissants, spring roll wrappers, artichokes aren't easy.

finewelshcheese · 11/07/2023 12:30

pictoosh · 11/07/2023 11:26

Making your own lasagne. So labour intensive.

Disagree wholeheartedly.

It's only a bit of layering up once you've cooked the ragu (for which you can chop all the stuff in a food processor and Chuck it in a low oven for a couple of hours).

Have never had a decent shop bought lasagne, they're always sloppy.

JamSandle · 11/07/2023 12:31

Making sushi from scratch.

ifonlyicouldthinkstraight · 11/07/2023 12:31

I don't mind making risotto though it does take it good while.

Puff pastry - no way. Even pro chefs 'cheat'.

Sunday roast just seems like a lot of prep and time management for an OK, predictable meal. It's the multi tasking that kills me.

MaryJean87 · 11/07/2023 12:32

Rice that doesn't go in the microwave.
Bought a lobster from Aldi. It was so difficult to prepare, bits of shell everywhere and hardly any of it to eat and what there was didn't taste very nice.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/07/2023 12:34

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 11/07/2023 12:02

Mayonnaise. But it is worth making hollandaise.
Fresh pasta.

I never made my own mayonnaise until I bought a Bamix stick blender.

It's now the simplest thing ever. It takes less than 5 minutes, and that includes getting the ingredients out of the cupboard!

I can't agree with lasagna either. It takes time, but is so much better than a ready made one.

BarrelOfOtters · 11/07/2023 12:36

@CC4712 hitting a half pomegranate with a spoon makes most of the seeds pop out.

DH fillets my fish for me - he's got the knack.

Kippers are easy though and lovely.

Risotto - easy but not worth the stirring.

Lasagna, a pot for the ragu, a pot for the white sauce, grater for the cheese, etc etc. I haven't made one in years. My friend makes a delicious one - so I just go round there.

Ah now that always used to be the case with crumpets for me but I started making sourdough bread in lockdown and can use the starter to make a batch of crumpets in no time at all now. Just add salt, sugar and bicarb to some starter and cook them.

I love making cinnamon buns too, they are far tastier than any shop bought.

I'll never buy Hellman's again since starting to make my own mayo last year either.

BarrelOfOtters · 11/07/2023 12:37

I live near the sea so can buy dressed crab that's really fresh where someone has done all the work, and scallops....

I always think oranges (big ones not satsumas) aren't worth the effort so rarely buy them, but when I do have one I wonder why I don't buy them more often.

This, the exception being blood oranges, I feast on them , it’s a short season and I look forward to it every year.

Crustyjuggler92 · 11/07/2023 12:41

I made gyoza because I have to eat gluten free and couldn't find any gf ones. Delicious but dinner took so bloody long for these tiny little mouthfuls, I feel fine resigning myself to a gyoza-free life. See also gluten free doughnuts - not worth it even if the alternative is no doughnuts!

ThatFraggle · 11/07/2023 12:42

> non microwave rice

I only cook rice in the rice cooker. Add water, salt, mix, then forget about it. It stays warm until ready to serve.

> Roast dinners

That's my easiest meal. If you buy one of the chickens already seasoned and in the tray thing. Pop in oven for 40 mins. When the alarm goes, pop in some veg & potatoes. Done. Shop bought gravy.
