Moussaka.
M and S one worth every penny

Anyotherdude · 11/07/2023 13:18

Anything by Ottolenghi - just too many ingredients!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/07/2023 13:19

Ottolenghi recipes. I can’t believe we’re four pages in and I’m the first one mentioning them.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/07/2023 13:20

Ha! Grin

Riapia · 11/07/2023 13:20

Italy gave the world spaghetti.
The rest of the world still can’t get the joke.
😉😁😁😁

Risotto! All that careful ladling of stock bit by bit for hours just to end up with some ok flavoured rice

Yes. I agree. A load of mush at the end.

Iloveanicegarden · 11/07/2023 13:22

@ThreadExterminator DH did that in Spain - ordered fish and chips. He got two complete sardines (eyes, gills the lot) He was famished so he ploughed his way through - but only the once!

Teateaandmoretea · 11/07/2023 13:23

Cottage pie.

Risotto I just shove in the water, it comes out fine.

FernsInTheFire · 11/07/2023 13:24

Anything that involves great effort but where the homemade factor doesn’t add anything. So not pasta, risotto, bread, curry, etc., because I prefer homemade.

I made Thai green curry paste once. It was really good, much better than the UK brands you can get in the supermarket. So good in fact that it was on a par with the very good Thai brand readymade paste I normally buy. It was fun to prove I can make it myself, but I haven’t bothered since!

WillyLows · 11/07/2023 13:26

Lasagne is definitely worth the time. Washing up is fine because you can do it in stages, unlike a roast where every pot you own needs washed at the same time.

Ice cream is definitely not worth the hassle when do many good options available.

BlowDryRat · 11/07/2023 13:28

Crayfish. I went to a crayfish party in Sweden once. Definitely not worth the effort.

I always think oranges (big ones not satsumas) aren't worth the effort so rarely buy them, but when I do have one I wonder why I don't buy them more often.

Same. Love huge oranges but really cba with the mess.

Mumtothreegirlies · 11/07/2023 13:31

Risotto. I’ve never made it myself but I’ve seen people cook it and I really don’t see the point.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 11/07/2023 13:32

Slicing, salting & frying aubergines to put in a home-made moussaka. Too much faff. These days I just cube an aubergine & chuck it in a pan with the other veggies (no potatoes, UK supermarkets!) & it actually comes out much better than doing it in fiddly layers.

Also, have discovered Polli tomatoes & they're bloody brilliant in all sorts of things, including moussaka. I can't stand fresh tomatoes & the sundried ones usually come in oil which gets everywhere during preparation. The Polli ones come in exactly the right sized pack for a meal for two, & there's no mess.

I made croissants once. Never again, they were fine but no better than bakery ones and such a lot of effort.

Frozen from Lidl etc. into the air fryer, marvellous! I've never actually made them though I do recall Pillsbury Doughboy did them in a tube many many years ago!

SparklyLogic · 11/07/2023 13:33

Homemade pasta
Macarons

Roast is a massive effort but always so much better at home.
Risotto - with a glass of wine and an audiobook or some good tunes on is better than meditation.

What’s the problem with lasagne? Make twice as much ragu the day before, béchamel is easy enough. Layer up, cheese in top. Bake.

WimbyAce · 11/07/2023 13:34

Beamur · 11/07/2023 11:41

Roast dinner. Better in the pub. Unless the potatoes are disappointing.

Disagree hugely with this. I love cooking a roast and always is better at home.

Risotto. I’ve never made it myself but I’ve seen people cook it and I really don’t see the point.

No, no, no. A properly cooked risotto is heavenly.

Lemonyyy · 11/07/2023 13:35

I think lasagna, risotto, fish pie, cottage pie are definitely all worth the effort to make yourself.

Baking in general I often don’t think is worth it - sourdough, puff pastry, fiddly puddings….can’t be arsed! I don’t have a very sweet tooth though.

When I used to eat lobster I didn’t mind shelling it but I remember going to a restaurant once and getting seafood pasta which had half an unshelled lobster bunged on top…so not only did I have to shell the bloody thing but it was covered in sauce! No thank you!

Lasagne - such a faff! I haven't made it for years since the children grew up, and only once for the grandchildren.

I now make myself a low-carb one with roasted veg instead of the pasta, and the sauce is a tub of full fat yoghurt, mixed with grated cheddar, 2 eggs, and parmesan spread on top, no pesky layers!

Do you roast the veg first then pour the sauce on top? Doesn't the yogurt 'break' in the heat?

BeverForget · 11/07/2023 13:35

I once made my own pesto, was such a complete faff, all to impress a friend who was a chef.
Who pointed out that it cost about 50p a jar (was a while ago).

100% butternut squash. It will sit for weeks and weeks in my fruit bowl untouched because I just can’t be bothered to peel it.

No need to peel.

Cut into chunks, take out the seeds and bake. The skin comes off easily when it's cooked or you can eat it skin and all.

BeverForget · 11/07/2023 13:36

And hummus...
