Could we PLEASE have a thread that stays up?

Meaning don't name anyone, or any programme or ask for initials or hint.

I just would like to discuss how this is likely to unfold.

OP posts:

agree - person sending pics an adult.
personally am amazed anyone would pay anyone anything for such pics.
am sure many on mumsnet have sent certain pics, albeit for free.

It is illegal. The law maybe doesn't make much sense when the age of consent is 16yo, but sending or eliciting explict images is illegal if the young person is under 18.

AuntieJoyce · 09/07/2023 06:57

I can’t believe posters are blaming the mother in the situation. She went to the BBC on the 19th of May and nothing was done.

If my child was developing a crack cocaine habit, I would be beside myself. And no it’s not the fucking parents fault fgs

Goldfoot · 09/07/2023 06:57

MayThe4th · 09/07/2023 02:40

Personally I think it’s all made up.

so shoot me, but the mum of what is now an adult speaking to the sun? Nope. I question her motives.

Even the Sun wouldn't print it without any evidence at all. They've seen the images and payment.

VisionsOfSplendour · 09/07/2023 06:57

Dita73 · 09/07/2023 06:43

The mother would also have got a massive lump some from selling the story. The kid has been through so much yet you’re prepared to go The Sun to get some kind of justice for the other person’s wrongdoing even if it means exposing your child to the tabloid press?!

Frmn everything I've seen she hasn't been paid by the sum, if she was lying about that you'd think that would have been said by other media

It's a big money industry and people want a piece of the pie. Many see it as an easy way to earn a living and in their naivety get taken advantage of by scumbags.

Seduced by the glamour maybe, but if they’re after an easy way to make a living they’d last about a week! There’s a reason the job title is “runner”… poorly paid, too…

Zonder · 09/07/2023 07:02

Museya15 · 09/07/2023 06:30

The child in question is a female and it's a news reader.

How would you know?

I worked years ago with one of the men who have been suggested. He had his demons but could also be very kind and generous. Didn’t have the easiest of childhoods. What a mess if it is him.

Depressing that the excuses have started before he is even named.

You seem concerned about the mess for him rather than the vulnerable young person being exploited.

thanks - someone in another thread said 17.
It is bonkers in my view - sex legal during which act you would see everything you could photo but illegal to send photos.
always possible receiver of pics didn't realise legal position?
I stress I myself have no interest in sex with or pics of folks of that age.

And yet more excuses.

Truly disgusting.

Could equally be tv or radio though @BillyNoM8s

Gross individual whoever it is. Why do these perverts always act as though they can get away with it? With complete impunity. Where does the cockiness come from?

It comes from constantly being told how wonderful they are, by their own management, producers, fans who post or email ( letters years ago)
They live in a bubble of other people in the same industry all being told how brilliant they are.
Their demands requests are met, from chauffeured cars to bowls of smarties on tap. They believe money buys them power. They come to believe they’re invincible— not all, I’m sure some are well rooted.
And very stupid. In a world of SM, litigation, newspapers that actively want to bring down a wrong ‘un its just a matter of time before they’re caught. And where they’re in the wrong so they should be and held to account I hope.

When you see the excuses on this thread you can see why it keeps happening. Lots of people don’t care about abuse of power when sex is involved and society continues to let men sexually abuse women - just look at the rape conviction rates.

celebrities have too much power - too many people are mesmerised by them and those working around them will lose their jobs if they say anything.

It is illegal. The law maybe doesn't make much sense when the age of consent is 16yo, but sending or eliciting explict images is illegal if the young person is under 18.

Criminalising young people aged 16 for consensually engaging in sex would (IMO) lead to a tsunami of tangled, destroyed lives.
There is (also IMO) something exploitative about asking for sexualised photos, though, possessing one, or sending one.
I’m trying to work out why I feel this way. The law does seem odd, but sexualised photos on phones seem creepier (IMO) and more threatening than a fumbly sexual encounter between consenting 16 year olds.
Can someone make sense of this for me?!

I think you're right and that's why the law is as it is, but it's also not surprising that many people didn't know it, assuming 16 is the age me of consent for everything.

rwalker · 09/07/2023 06:49

Ironic that the sun report this when they were more than had to pay the likes of Sam fox and Kerry Latonia at 16 to get there tits out

it’s completely unsavoury but there’s very limited one sided info from a mother desperate to find someone to blame for there child’s drug problem

If I was the mother, I’d be looking for someone to blame, too.

I'm not excusing the behaviour, it's abhorrent and should be career ending, illegal or not. I'm excusing posters who didn't know the law.

I see, sorry Goldfoot

Wheresthebeach · 09/07/2023 07:31

I wouldn’t trust the police to take action. They complained to the bbc and it was brushed under the carpet. Her child’s life has been ruined and they don’t care. She has not been paid for the story. I don’t blame her - her option was to leak to the press or let the man who destroyed her child’s life walk off as if nothing had happened. Someone has to hold these men accountable

Kinsters · 09/07/2023 07:33

Tbh so many names have been bandied around someone could come on the thread and say "it's definitely X" and I wouldn't believe them! Honestly some of the names people have come out with...

JFDIYOLO · 09/07/2023 07:34

Nothing on here yet, but if previous threads have been taken down for naming it's possible this might go that way too.

Ten years ago this happened - people were successfully sued for falsely naming in a high profile story:

The child is 20. Not necessarily easy to get a 20 year old into rehab if they don't want to go.

What kind of mother who’s child is being exploited goes to The Sun rather than the police?

I agree but it does say now the police are involved .
