Yes a simple statement apologising to the youngsters affected without all the 'poor us he has well documented mh problems' would have been better.

To be fair, they didn't say MH made him do it. He is in hospital after a severe episode due to the publicity this has created and his wife released a statement naming him.
Sounds very much like he's been sectioned, but I'm hopeful that there will be a more thoughtful statement re the victims at a later time.

He has suffered with MH problems in the past apparently, so it's not surprising this has tipped him over the edge.
It also sounded as if he tried to do something to himself too ( but only going by the wording on his wife's statement)
I feel for his wife and children. Sad for them and the victims too.
He could have avoided all this so easily as well

And they probably have been advised not to admit/apologise for anything while legal action is being taken

They've said nothing illegal has happened and the Met aren't investigating, so maybe keeping things in proportion would be fairer than driving him to suicide

Given his well documented 2 decade long history with severe mental health issues that have hospitalised him before I genuinely hope he is being well cared for.

Reading the BBC site there is no criminal element to this story.

Severe depression can make a person act out through reckless behaviours.
