Who do you think is the BBC presenter who has been suspended?

I don't have twitter and haven't seen any theories as to who it is, I'm presuming a man due to the figure outline being used in the press:

This is the full timeline as given by the BBC's Director General in the press conference today. (See attached)

Confirms that the family had visited in person and phoned to make a complaint, but essentially they did nothing until it went to the press. One unanswered email and one mobile call that "didn't connect" and then they ignored it totally.

Also confirms that they have sent evidence to the BBC.

You know, lots of things can be true all at once:

  • the Sun does awful things (e.g. Hillsborough) and wants to bring down the BBC
  • rich powerful men often sexually exploit vulnerable younger people (e.g. bloody loads of them)
  • senior people within organisations try to protect and cover up for each other (e.g. Savile, Oxfam)
  • people with drug addictions selling sex mostly don't want to be exposed publicly
  • politicians can be hugely corrupt, immoral, disgusting people who try to cover up their horrendous behaviour (e.g. Osborne, Johnson)

None of these truths are mutually exclusive. You don't have to pick one. They don't cancel each other out.

I have no experience of handling a complaint like this, but surely the BBC must get a lot of vexatious and utterly nonsensical allegations through all the time. In this case, they emailed asking for more information and got no response. They called the mobile number they'd been given and it didn't connect. That must surely have given them the impression that the complainants had perhaps had a change of heart or were not serious.

I feel for the BBC senior management in all this. They seem to have got caught up in a family drama, at one level anyway.

Also, it's a bit rich for politicians to be expressing serious concern about this when there are so many ongoing sex scandals involving allegations of sexual assault and rape involving current and former members of Parliament. All a bit convenient, frankly, especially given the email making serious allegations about George Osborne last week.

This is what I think.

So there was no basis to suspend the person accused before last week.

I think the parents have whipped this up, and the Sun has made an almighty blunder going with it.

Who knows what the truth is.

JulieHoney · 11/07/2023 13:46

Whatever the truth of the case, I can’t image the relationship between the 20yo and the mother is recoverable.

What an absolute shitstorm.

According to BBC News they were already estranged and had been for a number of years. And that, if correct, should have set off the alarm bells to the Sun.

Plus, generally, if the presenter paid £35,000 over three years that's only just above £10k a year, so the young person was bound to have loads of other clients.

All this could affect their business, so I doubt they're going to feel any warmth towards their mum and stepdad.

BishopRock · 11/07/2023 13:55

Sorry, it was ITV who said they had been estranged for a number of years.

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2023 13:57

It is weird that the parents went to the offices to complain ( this was reported on the news) then wasn't easily contactable afterwards
The parents probably assumed the bbc had put it on the 'back burner' , but clearly they had tried to get in touch ( so they claim )
They said they get lots of complaints so probably just thought this was another one that might not be true or something.
If this is the case I can see how this might happen , but this story has so many sides to it it's hard to know what to think now and everyday brings new things to light
The papers getting involved made them sit up a bit. I doubt many that have complained go that far!

Twonewcats · 11/07/2023 14:41

I feel like when anything that happens in the BBC, people slate them and instantly jump to the conclusion that they're all covering up a paedo ring.
They employ 20K+ people - there are bound to be some wrong 'uns among them, just like with any other company. And potentially higher than some, as people with that vile mindset are attracted to jobs in positions of authority. But it really doesn't mean management are actively hiding them.

Director General Tim Davie said in his press conference today that they established that the allegations were serious on the first phone call.

They are not like any other company. They have a government charter and a public service remit established in law. They are the state broadcaster and the face and voice of the UK.

Yes, rich men in positions of power frequently abuse that power. Perhaps the majority of them. This is true both of those at the state broadcaster and those in government.

I'm well aware, but that fact doesn't change what I said in the post!

The BBC is effectively part of the state apparatus, it has a charter and it has the right to put people in prison for not paying their TV licence. I was referring to the bit in your post which said "just like any other company it will have some wrong uns". It really can't be compared to any other company in any respect.

In addition, it has a very problematic history, we know now that many senior people within the BBC were aware of Savile and others. There absolutely was institutional cover up.

For all of these reasons, they have to be whiter than white. They have to take complaints very seriously indeed, not just dismiss them with "oh well they didn't answer our email" and carry on as normal until a newspaper breaks the story.

This is not ok.

I disagree re the point about having some wrong uns, they ARE like any other company. I haven't suggested that they're otherwise like any other company.

And re the complaint that was made, afaik we don't know what info they were given! Yes, they were serious allegations but let's imagine that the allegation was "one of your presenters has been paying for sleazy photos on OnlyFans", but with no name given as to who they were accusing, then the follow-up being ignored and an incorrect phone nbr.
Anyway, apologies if there's some info re the complaint that I've missed, but from what I personally know, this complaint wouldn't necessarily stand out any more than many others.

Game over now, surely. What on earth possessed him?

MermaidEyes · 11/07/2023 16:11

I think @Superfood has it right. Several things can all be true at once. And in light of the latest lot of allegations....

Imnotswallowingthat · 11/07/2023 16:12

Breaking news that a second young person has come forward making similar allegations against the same man. The BBC say they have verified that “threatening messages” sent to the young person were from a mobile phone associated with the presenter.
