Camwy. - it's a river in Patagonia. Really suited him though (Welsh ..... extremely Welsh man in his 50's).

A woman called Raven Shakespeare. I have no idea if it was her real name, but my teenaged self fell in love and vowed to name my future daughter after her (I didn’t)

strawberryblue · 03/07/2023 20:23

Anal. Indian name meant to be pronounced Ay-naaal but spelt unfortunately.

Also Tennessee (who they called ten ten and had never been to America)

And Merlin

Microwaveexpert · 03/07/2023 20:29

A guy called Blaith, pronounced Blade. He was cool.

Strange it wasn't the other way round - Blaidd is pronounced Blyth I believe in Welsh, it means wolf.

Miracle-Star is the oddest name I've seen. Pre-covid I did work with a young child named Gary, so if anyone tells you no child has been named Gary in the last 5 years, know that they're wrong - there is at least one.

What a great name.

I knew of someone named Calypso, which I think absolutely beautiful.

A friend once told me about a woman who gave birth to twins and called them Male (pronounced Marley) and Female (pronounced Fermarly) because she read it on their wrist bands in the hospital.
No idea if he was winding me up, but it still makes me smile!

One of my favourite unusual names is Loveday.

He was winding you up or being a shithead - similar to La-a, this is a racist urban legend intended to mock immigrants and/or people who speak little English.

enemaofthestate · 03/07/2023 20:37

Fox
2 girls called Honey
Bliss
Pebbles

Annalouisa · 03/07/2023 20:38

An English girl called Atalanta. Apparently it's an Italian football club.

doingthehokeykokey · 03/07/2023 20:42

I know a Mona Lisa. She’s 14

Workawayxx · 03/07/2023 20:43

Mystique is the least common I know I think. I used to raise an eyebrow at uncommon names but now I love hearing that someone has named their baby something unusual! My ds doesn’t raise an eyebrow at “mystique” but suggested that dd who has a traditional although not super common name might be teased at school!

I know this particular story wasn't true, and not really referring to this thread... but I do think English speaking people take too much pleasure in mocking names from other cultures.

I can understand having an "oh that's unfortunate spelling/pronunciation in English" reaction but it's almost an Anglo tradition to tell jokes about black, East Asian, etc names with glee. Maybe they don't realise lots of common and beautiful English names mean things like Blowjob and Diarrhoea (yes, really) in other languages!

FcukTheDay · 03/07/2023 20:43

Shyella

doingthehokeykokey · 03/07/2023 20:43

Tuppence, but it was her nickname

loislovesstewie · 03/07/2023 20:44

I've heard of quite a few Atalantas and it is an Italian football team.

Gardenerboo · 03/07/2023 20:46

@Gatekeeper I think I’d like to meet Bratton…

PaperLanterns · 03/07/2023 20:46

My great grandmother was called Georgina which isn’t unusual except the ina rhymed with China. We found this hilarious when we found out as teenagers.

EsmeShelby · 03/07/2023 20:48

My daughter is an Élodie. It’s a name I heard through studying French and living in France. Hadn’t met any in the UK before naming her, but have now heard of others so think it’s growing in popularity.

Thats one of my favourite names ever and I'm always disappointed I've never met anyone called it!

ohwhatadustyanswer · 03/07/2023 20:52

I came across a baby Maverick. Going enjoy it if he turns out to be a square like Saffy from Ab Fab

Lwrenagain · 03/07/2023 20:53

Years ago when I worked with babies almost every little girl was named lily mae but those who weren't had names such as tillie rae or millie jay.

The most unusual name I heard there was honey-blossom, but there were a few Disney names such as Ariel or Jasmine.

Elderflower14 · 03/07/2023 20:55

There was a couple in Escape To The Country the other day and their daughter is called Bambi!! 😏

MissingMoominMamma · 03/07/2023 20:56

I remember a woman once telling me that she’d named her daughter Chatellamy because she loved both Chantelle and Amy.

That child will be in her late 30s now, and I’ve occasionally wondered what name she goes by as an adult.
