I knew a woman through work who called 3 of her children just letters - NJ, NK and AJ. She also had 3 other children with actual names. And they absolutely were not initials - I had cause to see their birth certificates.

stephaniezanoni · 03/07/2023 20:56

Girl called Pebbles (and the parents were most insistent they weren't inspired by the Flintstones)

Man called Faulkland (born during the war), which is a great sounding name.

A male immigrant who said his real name was unpronounceable for Brits, so had chosen to use the name Bunny.

I met a toddler Gaylord 30 years ago.

Girl called Bay.

I know a Stalin too. Not Russian!

Ketzele · 03/07/2023 21:07

But the worst/most ridiculous name I ever heard - which I won't say for obvious reasons - was a child in the care system. I asked their social worker if it was a cultural name and she said no, just part of the abuse.

PaperLanterns · 03/07/2023 21:08

yeah, I’ve know George-eenas but never George-eye-na’s until my grandpa was boring us with his family tree research and pulled out that gem. 😂

Mind, there are some bloody awful names in my own family. Even allowing for the fact that we're foreign. Think Candida, Bruno, Hedwig...

mrsDracoMalfoy · 03/07/2023 21:11

Blodwyn. A little girl. I love it.

Bairnsmum05 · 03/07/2023 21:11

@ConsuelaHammock Coisty 😨poor soul! A few Lennons and Henriks around my way!

MrsCLogan · 03/07/2023 21:12

I used to know an Antigone (AN-tig-O-nee). It may not be rare to some but I’ve only ever met one person with that name and thought it was utterly beautiful. Curiously, her siblings, both younger and older, had very typical English names.

Otherwise, I have met a Bracken (female) and a Star (male)

NoRegretsss · 03/07/2023 21:14

Sechiel. Have only heard it once a few years back.

Work in education so heard some crackers:-

nevaeh.

T-J.
D-J
Teddy (actual name on birth certificate)
indiana (girl)
Tuppence
Lily-Roo.
Felix
Junior Junior.

There are others but they are current pupils.

I take it you haven't worked in education long? Felix and Indiana are perfectly common names.

UrsulaBelle · 03/07/2023 21:21

Gaive to rhyme with Dave, his brother Heathcliff and sister Nada. Nice family actually.
Latrell and Pharell, brothers, Rob-eye, Thor, Honey, Chyna, Jimihendrix, Troy, Julie-nne and Thadra, spelt like that rather than Phaedra. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Thor

Been in education a long time.

Some older names are making a comeback. I’m the last 5 years I’ve had a Tracy, Dean, Gary, and a Brian.
