I've come across a Merlin and a Sherlock.

A girl in the year above me at school was called Merlin 😍

When I was pregnant with my son I had customers regularly ask about the name I'd chosen so when I told one couple I'd chosen Heathcliff, they told me about their friend called Dartanian/D'Artagnan. Never heard of either name since!

I met some twins named Caesar and Kaiser...Caeser I have heard before and think it's quite a nice name. I can only assume Kaiser will go by Kai when he's older!!

But that’s literally two spellings of the same name! Kaiser is how Caesar is pronounced in Latin

Though ‘Freek’ is pronounced ‘frake’ and doesn’t actually mean anything. Ditto Loes (pronounced ‘loose’ in English but doesn’t actually mean that). Equally when you whack most of these into Google translate they don’t actually mean anything in English. They just ‘look’ funny at best. ‘Fokke’ though is unfortunate, I agree! A lot of Dutch surnames are pretty silly, but that at least is deliberate: rumour has it that they made them up to annoy the French at the time of the census, knowing that they wouldn’t know what they meant. See here:

14 Dutch surnames which you are glad are not yours

In 1811 during the French occupation of the Netherlands, the Dutch were forced to register their names for taxation purposes.  To annoy the French and give their friends a laugh, many locals regist…

I know a child whose middle name is Danger. It was his dad's idea, he wanted him to be able to say Danger is my middle name.
He's about 20 now. I wonder if he ever has actually said it.

That is horrific! At least with something like Dick, it is also an accepted, traditional abbreviation of a common name (albeit unfortunate); but 'Knob' is unequivocal!

I remember on an old 'funny names of people you've met' thread, somebody met an American man with the surname 'Wank'! How could you go through life with a name like that?!

JanesBlond · 05/07/2023 10:25

I used to work with someone whose surname was Butt. He was lovely but I felt sorry for his kids with a name like that!
