Camwy. - it's a river in Patagonia. Really suited him though (Welsh ..... extremely Welsh man in his 50's).

Young brothers called Godswill & Marvellous.

I think they are considered virtue names in certain cultures.

Yes, like Blessing or Precious.

I love Marvellous. With a name like that, the child would have to strive to be marvellous..? Plus it would be very hard to tell them off:) Marvellous, clean up your room...

I personally know:

Cornelius (goes by Cornel)
Phoenix
Virgil
Torquail (a rather posh Scottish name, more unusual these days)
Desdemona (we met travelling, she was Californian).

An ex-bf was Kit Baggins McPhee
His brother Tom Bombadil McPhee - parents were Tolkien fans!

Have taught many unusual names. Two that stand out are Ceejay and DRon- both white, Scottish and quite a few years ago too.

I wish I'd called my DS1 Murdo. I nearly did and was talked out of it. I know one, very lovely older man. Great name.

I know a Swastika. I think she's Thai. It means Peace.

Someone probably already got there before me, but a swastika is a Hindu symbol iirc, so this doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Yes. Aryan is also a common Hindu name. It doesn't mean what it means here.

This thread, though Grin

Cracking up at Matthew, Mark, Luke & Norman!!

I know of a Jzero.

Sounds like a brand of orange juice made with sweeteners instead of sugar.

Long time ago I worked briefly with a Mr Glasscock.

Can't remember his first name, though as everyone would call him loudly across the site, "MR GLASSCOOOOCK" (strong emphasis on cock) 😅

Fuckwit, ahahahaha

Imagine screaming that at the top of your lungs across a park

I almost called them in the waiting room! I used their surname instead 😂

SabrinaThwaite · 04/07/2023 10:46

I had a great aunt Tryphena.

A woman called Io was a year or two above me at uni.

MrsMarkRonson · 04/07/2023 10:50

Egavas. The Family's surname was 'Savage' and Egavas is Savage spelt backwards, thats how they got the name. Oldest son is Michael.

They weren’t GOT fans?

Think the young lady in question May predate GOT. And the family is Welsh, so…

When I was in hospital with my first one of the mother's decided her baby name was going to be Claudia Skye, only Claudia was pronounced Cloudier , I don't know if she did name her baby this as we all burst out laughing.

Lucretia sounds like something you'd need a prescription to clear up.

What? It’s a beautiful and very old Italian name…

It might be old and Italian, but it definitely sounds.... medical.

I know a 12yo Story. Same one?

My son was at school with a Tuna!

My son also went to school with someone whose name was pronounced tuna, but was actually Tune. They were German, so it wasn't said like tuna when they said it, but it was when a bunch of 6 year olds said the name. None of the kids seemed to care it sounded like the fish. Most kids just accept names at that age I think.

My kids also went to school with an Arses. Turkish, I think?

DaisyWaldron · 04/07/2023 11:30

Thus thread is strange, because I know multiple people with some of the names which have been mentioned here. I know more people called Athene, Merlin, and Ajay than I do Flora or David, but David and Flora seem unremarkable.

Walking past a supermarket carpark about 10 years ago and heard a very chav mother screeching at her Daughter "You get yourself here now Jazzledine!". Was too stunned to laugh. Jazzledine. Utterly horric name.

In fairness, anything overheard in a carpark, supermarket etc could just be a family nickname rather than the actual name - Jazzledine could actually have been Jasmine or Geraldine. I'm sure I'm not alone in using all manner of names for my DC, who have perfectly normal names on their birth certs.
