I met a little 2 year old Moonriver in the sandpit a few weeks ago. Her mum is heavy pregnant so I’m awaiting to see the sibling set of names 🙂

@Angelil yep really, Baby Hades. They didn't think anyone would make the connection. They told us before he was born what they planned to call him and they were told by many people it was a bad idea, but they went ahead!
@IamnotHWhittier we hoped it would get rejected here too!

God, that is terrible. Are they…a bit thick?

Pixiepop14 · 04/07/2023 06:37

Beachbreak2411 · 04/07/2023 06:37

SiobhanSharpe · 04/07/2023 06:40

A lady called ILDIKO (wrote in caps as it looks like two I‘s - Ildiko - otherwise) She must ge quite elderly now. it may be a Norwegian name although she was definitely English, cut-glass accent and all.
My paternal grandmother was called Pretoria but sadly she later changed it to Geraldine.

LoveNames2 · 04/07/2023 06:41

I'm a supply teacher, so have come across a lot!

Butterfly

Rocket

Marvellous

Phuc (Vietnamese name - was a bit worried about pronouncing this one)

Jesus Christ - felt very strange calling out to him!

There's more that I've forgotten, but these are some of the most memorable!

loislovesstewie · 04/07/2023 06:44

Being pedantic Avon is actually Brittonic, the ancient Celtic language; the modern languages derive from that. It's the language spoken before Welsh etc and before the Saxons arrived.

ememem84 · 04/07/2023 06:49

A friend has a loveday which is just such a lovely name.

I also used to work with a lady called precious and another called sleepy. Precious was originally from Nigeria and sleepy from the Philippines.

a other lady I worked with, also from the Philippines was known as Peaches. But it wasn’t her given name.

i also used to have a great aunt bunny. Real name Elizabeth.

I used to know an Ildiko - she was Hungarian.

@Goneistheday not Royston Vasey, live in Essex. (That was probably your second guess, right?)

I wish Jesus Christ would have been happy with that! He was only 5 and when I asked him if I should just call him Jesus, he said 'no, it's Jesus Christ'!

continentallentil · 04/07/2023 07:18

Bonhomie (female, she was jolly enough)

Cordoba (as in the city)

Genista (as in the plant. She was Scottish, not sure if it is)

Diggory (I do think this should be used more)

Phaedra

Also a Seraphina but that’s obviously not so unusual these days, but was when I was a kid

Correct! And they speak Welsh.

And (as a Welsh speaker) when you meet them it's really interesting because they speak it with a Spanish accent (or at least that's what it sounds like to me)!

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 04/07/2023 07:20

My Nan was called hepzibah, she went by Pat 😂

A woman called Velocity. Her Dad was in the RAF. Yes, everyone did mishear as Felicity.

Worked with a Turkish man called Ufuk Uras. Unfortunate but true.

Velocity belongs on that recent 'words that should be names' thread. Integer and Vector would be other nice science names. For the statisticians - girl twins Anova and Ancova.

What makes the Caesar/Kaiser thing odder is that they're the same name.

Dorcas is lovely - what a shame people are silly.

I think Destiny was quite common in the 90s/early 2000s?

ZickZack · 04/07/2023 07:23

Tempest

Seddon · 04/07/2023 07:23

Xzyrous (I think it's said as Cyrus)

They weren’t GOT fans?

Siriusmuggle · 04/07/2023 07:26

A friend met Frodo Jesus.
A different friend taught a family Mercedes, Porsche and Cosworth.
