Would you go to Paris on Monday?

Just canceled a work trip to Paris due to concerns about the volatile situation there. I realize that central Paris is mostly unaffected (so far) but it seems like a bad time to visit. My boss (Paris based) has implied that I am being overly dramatic.

Would you go?

Here

Why would the response to an attack on Neuilly, Auteuil etc. result in a bigger response than elsewhere? @AuxArmesCitoyens Although I think I know the answer. That would be quite inflammatory in its own right surely.

I'm generally pretty risk averse but spreading false information to convince people to cancel trips isn't reasonable. And calling it out isn't "downplaying".

What? People are not spreading false information and generally have the good sense to make their own mind up re risk factors!

What is your issue? Would you like to enjoy a summer break with people rioting and looting??

I am beginning to see why there are issues. Surely the much bigger question needs to be addressing the needs of these young and disenfranchised young people no? Not telling people off for cancelling their plans ffs.

kitsuneghost · 02/07/2023 11:49

It will be fine. Just avoid the usual tourism trip to the slums

She's 19. Interrailing with a friend.

My DD is in exactly the same situation (same age, interrailing with a friend, in Paris atm). They're very sensible and are not planning on going out in the evenings, so I'm not too worried.

GCalltheway · 02/07/2023 12:58

Well let’s hope the worst is now over and your kids can enjoy their trips safely. I still think we can’t forget about the kids protesting that will never get the chance to inter rail and see the world. Yes it might be inconvenient and dangerous but they shouldn’t be forgotten. A child died at the hands of the police.

SoSoSoSo · 02/07/2023 13:10

Protestors perhaps. Rioters no. I can't say that I'm inclined to care about people who are rioting, burning down buildings, looting and trying to murder a woman and her two small children though perhaps you'll find an excuse for that too.

@GCalltheway well I am enjoying my summer break in France. What was I supposed to do - lose the money I spent on trains and hotels and sit at home wringing my hands?

I lived through rioting and looting in London - I still had to go to work and do the shopping etc..

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/07/2023 13:17

@summersdayin68 good, do not be worried. I am in France atm and it is fine. I wouldn't recommend a trip to Marseille right now but if they ztick to central areas ans do not get involved in any demos there really isn't a cause for concern.

It’s not my idea of fun. I would have taken the train to Bordeaux or somewhere safer but that’s me. I also have dc, so there is no way we would go.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/07/2023 13:24

I'm in Perpignan. It is perfectly calm.

You are starting to sound a bit strange tbh.

GCalltheway · 02/07/2023 13:32

I was thinking the same about you! To be fair.

notimagain · 02/07/2023 13:39

Just been into "our" city centre this AM and it's fine, sadly couldn't stop for lunch given the restaurants were all open.

Just for for avoidance of doubt I do think there are some aspects of French policing that needs root and branch reform (that is putting it politely) and there are serious social problems in France, but that doesn't mean I'm prepared to turn a blind eye to exaggeration about events on the ground.

I am also of the opinion there are elements of the UK media that are distinctly Francophobe, or cater for a Francophobe audience.

GCalltheway · 02/07/2023 13:41

I am going to Provence via Marseille on Friday - how bad is it there? We will have dc with us.

You do know most people love France and choose to holiday there in the millions? If you are picking up sensationalist headlines that is nothing new! Just selling papers because they know how invested we are. To be fair it makes a nice change, the shit hits the fan fairly consistently here too!

summersdayin68 · 02/07/2023 13:48

@Ginmonkeyagain That's reassuring to know, thanks; they're staying in the centre and don't have any plans to venture further out (and will be staying in and reading in the evenings, much to DS's derision 🙄). No plans to visit Marseille, either - they're going on to Rennes and Bordeaux, and then back to Paris again for a few days at the end of their trip.
