Would you go to Paris on Monday?

Just canceled a work trip to Paris due to concerns about the volatile situation there. I realize that central Paris is mostly unaffected (so far) but it seems like a bad time to visit. My boss (Paris based) has implied that I am being overly dramatic.

Would you go?

The telegraph love reporting how shit France is and they hate Macron.

LynetteScavo · 01/07/2023 10:44

I certainly wouldn't cancel a work trip to the 15th.

I might not suggest Paris next week for a teen travelling independently for the first time.

toomuchlaundry · 01/07/2023 10:49

I wouldn’t be going if I didn’t need to. Going to Paris just to meet someone seems a waste of time and resources in normal times, never mind in unsettled times.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 01/07/2023 10:50

Hey, don't feel like a flake. It looks really scary and I would question the necessity of travel in this situation too.

However rolley-eyed your boss gets your personal safety is and should be your first priority. Don't be pressured into doing something your not comfortable with.

Safest thing would be never to leave the house OP.

Keepitonthelow · 01/07/2023 10:56

If there were any knock-on effects to travel eg getting from the airport I would definitely not go.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 10:57

No I would not go,

dopdop25 · 01/07/2023 10:58

Having been caught up in the first day of the gilet jaune protests back in 2017 I wouldn't. Our car was attacked by protesters despite the kids being in it- windscreen smashed and they tried to let the tyres down to stop us from trying to escape

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 11:00

FO issued a warning that disruption is very likely, trams, buses being suspended. Curfews in place.
Macron is trying to avoid calling a state of emergency but that is precisely what will happen. Not helped by the minsters calling the protesters ‘vermin’ what an explosive, racist and incendiary statement to make. unbelievable. I would not fly to France - anywhere in France for at least a week.

cobicat · 01/07/2023 11:00

@dopdop25
That sounds absolutely terrifying! Whereabouts in France was that?

We were in Paris with yellow vest riot and we saw tanks in the streets and it truly felt like a war zone.

Piscesmumma1978 · 01/07/2023 11:01

They've been looting in Paris. That really makes me angry. That's good nothing to do with the teen who was shot, it's just an excuse to steal 😡

It's the funeral today apparently.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 11:02

Offer to host the meeting on zoom. I am the person you are meeting would rather not mee you atm. It’s not safe.

Travel insurance always has a clause that says something about terrorism/ war /civil insurrection/ travel against foreign office advice etc.
If your claim has nothing to do with any of that you’re fine.

Of course you should go. It’s youths on the street against the police.
They aren’t taking hostages or planting bombs.

They are extremely hostile and angry. So much so even bbc and other media crews have not been able to go there. Jeez I love the way some people are so cavalier with other peoples safety!

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/07/2023 11:09

We're in Paris right now. We just walked from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon.

Central Paris is quiet, safe and not noticably on fire.

We are headed down to the South now, we will see what tonight will bring.

whirlygirly · 01/07/2023 11:10

I'm not a nervous traveller but if the work trip could be postponed or done virtually, I would probably choose to do so.

toomuchlaundry · 01/07/2023 11:10

@Ginmonkeyagain have you been impacted by public transport restrictions?

I hope you are staying somewhere safe and all is well later.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/07/2023 11:13

No. There are currently no restrictions. Those were over night and applied to buses and suburban services. We walked because we had the time and we like walking.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 11:14

There is an 11pm curfew for everyone wherever you are in France. I am not sure if you are aware of that?

Augend23 · 01/07/2023 11:14

WaitingfortheTardis · 01/07/2023 08:55

I'm not debating it, my reading of that is to avoid it unless essential. Riots are occurring in different places around the area and it is clearly not possible to easily avoid them. It clearly isn't a safe place to travel to right now.

I can absolutely see why you wouldn't want to travel there given what's going on. But probably better to be clear that this is what the pages of the .gov.uk website look like when it's advising against travel - so in this instance that's not what they're doing for France.

(This example is for parts of Turkey.)

Not helped by the minsters calling the protesters ‘vermin’ what an explosive, racist and incendiary statement to make.

I agree - absolutely appalling. And a great way to calm things down. 🙄

I don't know exactly what he said but that's an accurate transaction then I agree it's only going to make things worse.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 11:19

It’s accurate, unfortunately.
