What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

Those thin loops of ribbon on clothes are meant for hanging the garment up right when it’s on sale, and once you’ve bought it you’re meant to cut them off.

If you see a sheep lying on its back, tip it over or it will die.

Extra fun fact - a sheep on its back is called a riggwelter.
'Rigg' is a Northumbrian word for a hillside field.

As a child I was taught

The cookoo comes in April,
Songs a song in May,
In June it changes tune,
And then it flies away.

Love these rhymes - miss hearing Cuckoos.

Talking to my colleagues the other day, I discovered I knew something they didn't.

Your petrol gauge in your car tells you what side your fuel cap is on.

I knew this, they didn't. They returned to the office the next day shocked by this revelation, because they checked their cars on the drive home, and yes the gauge did indicate the side the cap is on 🤣

I remember my dad telling me this while we were sitting in his car, that has the pointer pointing in the opposite direction to where the fuel cap is!

shut the front door. This can’t be real, that’s gross

No, flushing it is gross. Where in blazes do you think it ends up? At a water treatment plant, blocking the filter, which then has to be unblocked. Or clogging up a sewage line so some person ends up with it in their basement or bathroom.

They don't just dissolve! FFS

But flushing a used tampon to end up in the sea isn’t gross? Or letting it clog the drains so sewage water backs up over everyone’s gardens isn’t gross?

If it's difficult to turn a door key, padlock key a squirt of WD40 in the lock works like magic, also for stiff hinges etc.

All 5 of the cars in our household do.

Both cars in my household don’t.

I have a 2013 Ford focus and the gauge is on diff side than fuel tank

You can use lighter fluid (like you use to start the grill) to get gummy residue left by price stickera. Just put a little on a rag and rub it right off.

Those little stickers on fruit & some veg are edible.

Hardbackwriter · 29/06/2023 06:53

On the petrol cap ones - the thing that so many people don't seem to know is that you really can fill up from both sides in most cars! I see so many people queuing for ages to make sure they're on the 'right' side of the pump when they have cars that could so easily be filled from the other side. I don't get it!

So, on your fuel gauge, the little gas pump icon has an arrow pointing the opposite way of your gas cap? Or, if it has no arrow, the hose is on the opposite side of your gas cap?

That is really unusual.

I keep a corned beef tin key on my keyring to use on supermarket trolleys. I was shown this one day when I did not have a pound coin and a member of staff used one she kept on her just for that purpose.

Or you could have a trolley coin on a keyring 😂

I keep a corned beef tin on my key ring in case I need a snack.

The whole w thing isn't true (despite the confusion it's caused) is it?

There are others that (when spelt) don't start with themselves:

Ay bee cee dee,
Ee eff gee,
Haitch I jay kay,
Ell em en o pee.
Cue ar ess,
Tee u vee,
Double-u ex,
Wy and zed (or zee).

You know what hasn't cropped up yet that tends to on these threads? The toaster dial being minutes. (Despite it not being a general thing, as it varies from toaster to toaster.)

May I suggest @AndTheSurveySays that you read the leaflet first, and then again about evey six months before recycling it, as recommendations/ingredients can change, even with something as basic (but lethal if the directions aren't followed precisely) as over the counter Paracetamol seems to be.

That mood changed quickly.

I've not driven a car for years that doesn't! What type don't?

it's "aitch" (not haitch)

It's supposedly an arrow printed next to the icon of a fuel pump that tells you, not the location of the gauge itself.

Not for spelling, as my post points out if you read it very carefully.

Nor in pronunciation in Hiberno-English. Though don't worry but, it's a common ignorance posters frequently get snobby about.

I remember reading on here that there are dinosaurs that lived millions (like mega millions) of years apart. I thought they all knocked about together at the same time, but nope this wasn't the case. It still blows my mind

There is less time between the T-Rex and the iPad than there is between the T-Rex and the stegosaurus.

Did you know about reading appliance manuals? That's a handy one. Wink

I love those place in history facts!

Nintendo was founded when Jack the ripper was still on the loose. The last use of the guillotine was in France, in the same year Star Wars came out.

That sort of thing.
