What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

off to google how to do this exact thing right now…

No worries at all!

Never put a melanine plate/bowl in the microwave, the food will stay cold and the plate will be crazy hot.

I found this out the other day. Not ideal - especially as it was the same week my tumble dryer burnt out AFTER I cleaned the bloody filter

You can relieve knat or mosquito bite itching for hours using a teaspoon heated in hot water pressed against the bite. As hot as you can stand, for a couple of minutes. The heat breaks down the proteins that cause the itching.

It an Also works if you heat it up over a candle flame or with a lighter.

Not the cheapest but these seal really well for tampons. I use them if I'm out where there isn't a bin and I need to make use of a bush! So I don't mind paying a bit more as it's not an every day thing

There's a bit at the back of your fridge your meant to drain or clean or something. Kept reading about it on TOMM last year but haven't got around to checking out yet Confused It's defo on my to do list but keeps getting bumped.

Oh yes, the coils. Another one I found out the hard way.

There are a few hairs but you can only see them in the right light.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 29/06/2023 01:08

There are two things at the back (usually) of a fridge that need cleaning: the heat exchange coils (external - usually up the back but mine are underneath) need dusting to maintain efficiency and reduce fire risk; the drain (internal) needs cleaning to avoid clogging, sludge and stink.

Based on 30 years in healthcare….men who have a full head of hair have bald chests. Men who have bald heads have hairy chests. It’s not 100% but it absolutely is true for most men.

My DH has loads of hair everywhere including on his head. He even has hair on the top of his shoulders which was a new one on me. DS showing all signs of going the same way.

I think W should be pronounced 'double V', not 'double U'

I'm sure this is how W is pronounced in French.(double vey) Correct me if I'm wrong.

That bleach is supposed to be used with cold water.

That alcohol stops most antidepressants from working properly.

Talc is great for getting sand off.

Ice packs go on top of the food in a cool bag, because cold air sinks.

Spider plants have tiny, microscopic spiders that live among the root system.

You don't hear noises in your dreams.

A cat's tail is the same length as it's two from legs (added together).

Giraffe's necks didn't evolve to be long.

Australia is wider than the moon.

A reason to always take these threads with a grain of salt: None of these are correct (note: I cannot find any sources to support cat tail length and I looked in-depth; the rest are repudiated), except Australia being wider than the moon.

Spider plants absolutely DO NOT have anything to do with spiders. As it says in this article and many others, the plant is named after the “pups” (tiny, baby plants) it produces, which look like spiders. It does not contain spiders (myth) or keep spiders away (myth).

You DO hear noise in dreams, says the British Psychological Association and many, many others.

Cats’ legs vs. tails: I could find nothing supporting this idea about cat tail length directly. If you have a source, that would be awesome! It appears that tail length may be associated with body length, but nothing specifically mentions leg length, as obviously this would be thrown by outliers like Savannah cats and Manx (tailless).

If you see a sheep lying on its back, tip it over or it will die.

Strawberrydelight78 · 29/06/2023 02:31

My sil saw me bringing the thing that catches the water in our condenser dryer into the kitchen to empty. She asked what it was. When I told her she said well I never knew that like it was some great invention. Asked her where she thought it went said never thought about it. She's 62 btw.😂😂😂

A farmer's daughter told me that if you see a sheep on it's back with its lambs wedged in by its side then pull it over as it is probably stuck and corvids will peck out its eyes yuk

squishee · 29/06/2023 03:39

Fruit flies lay their eggs on the outside of melons, and hitchhike into our kitchens. As the fruit ripens, the flies hatch out. That's why melons = fruit flies. It blew my tiny mind when I found out. Wash and dry your melons, problem solved.

Yep. Sheep struggle to turn over from that position, especially if pregnant or if they have their heavy wool coat on. Gasses build up in their stomachs which then squashes their lungs and they die. But while waiting to die, crows can come and peck their eyes out and other wildlife can savage them easily. Poor sheep.

What does it mean?

I’m sure everyone knows this but I was surprised that a friend didn’t so:

You can freeze milk. You just put it in the freezer in its carton/plastic bottle. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

(I occasionally do it if I’ve bought too much or if we’re going on holidays; put it in the fridge the night you get back and you’ll have fresh milk in the morning.)

Or, if you don't normally drink milk (lactose intolerant) put it in an ice cube tray - one with a lid so it doesn't spill and when you have guests add a cube to their tea / coffee.

Not on a kia Ceed lol 😆 I remembering reading this and being blown away only to see that it wasn't true for my car lol the fuel indicator comes on on the right but my fuel cap is on the left

Isn't there an arrow? This one shows the petrol symbol on the right but the arrow points to the left.

Oh just thought of one for left handers.

If you are trying to open a bottle of wine, don't try to move the corkscrew, it is designed for right handed people, hold the corkscrew still and use your left hand to turn the bottle.

You know those information leaflets you get inside a packet of paracetamol? You can just throw them in the bin instead of keeping it in the box and having to fight to fit the file of medicine back in every time you have a headache.

May I suggest @AndTheSurveySays that you read the leaflet first, and then again about evey six months before recycling it, as recommendations/ingredients can change, even with something as basic (but lethal if the directions aren't followed precisely) as over the counter Paracetamol seems to be.

Most big brands of dark chocolate have much more sugar than milk chocolate.

I have heard so many people say that dark chocolate is better for you, and suitable for diabetics.

Cadbury’s milk choc is approx 26% cocoa, 20% milk powder, palm oil and just less than 50% sugar.

Cadbury’s Bourneville is 36% cocoa, a bit of milk powder, palm oil and nearly 60% sugar…

It’s also not really dark chocolate as that should be over 70% cocoa solids and no milk or palm oil should be anywhere near it (dark chocolate is naturally vegan).

Please don’t eat cheap ‘dark’ chocolate if you are diabetic or avoiding sugar. I’ve no idea why people think it’s healthier.

I think you are right. The RSPCA website says that dairy cows give birth every year and are culled at about 6.
