"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

The wrong kind of pay rise causes inflation. By that of cause we mean pay rises for the poor who don't deserve it, and would only spend the money. Payrises for those who already have too much money doesn't cause inflation because they just put the money in tax havens.

Just catching up and saw this. It's scary how correct it is.

Some people think I post in jest...

itsgettingweird · 12/07/2023 20:40

Not jest.

Just a scarily accurate very dry satire.

Those who don't "know" you will probably think you're flippant. I just think you're mystic Meg reincarnated because you're accurate weeks in advance of the truth being revealed in most cases Grin

BBC article on Johnson's phone - Adam Warner's response -
"I read this whole, long article and still am non the wiser as to what the problem is. Possibly a passcode? Changed his number? WhatsApp not available? I assume that might of the British security services can figure out how to do this"

twitter.com/adamwagner1/status/1679202954417434625?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

Busy deleting stuff I expect.

The BBC then finally got round to reporting it, 2 days later

In fairness they first needed to report that Mrs Johnson had had a baby last week. Priorities 😉

Jeremy Hunt: Chancellor tells me “we won’t fund any public sector pay awards through additional borrowing” and that “I don’t want to pretend to people watching at home that this isn’t a very difficult time”. See full interview on #peston 10.45 ITV

So there we have it - cuts to (shoestring) services or just escalating the recruitment & retention crisis in teaching & health.

Thank fuck for that. Unless Jeremy told us it was a difficult time how would people at home know?

‘I don’t want to pretend to people watching at home that this isn’t a difficult time’ FML.

HoL still slogging away. Kudos Jenny Jones.

"Now at 10pm, soon ... 5 back to back votes to make the Bill less nasty, 2 on arrangements for removal, 2 on detention, 1 on modern slavery. The Opposition is still here in force. Tories seem disheartened."

@IClaudine please don't go, we need you to be part of the Choir of Rationality when the Tory Brigade comes on shift.

Love that. Can we get some t shirts made for the Choir of Rationality? Do we need to learn some moves or do we just sway gently?

Zonder · 12/07/2023 23:04

Tories seem disheartened

Thank the Lord!

EXC: IPSA announce investigation into the Tory Northern Research Group after Sky News Westminster Accounts investigation into public money payments

twitter.com/samcoatessky/status/1679381866900606983?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

If I'm reading this correctly it looks like individual MPs funnelled pre agreed amounts of public money to fund the Northern Research Group - in return they received the same amount back from a private donor IX Wireless.

"In 2021 and 2022, 24 MPs received money from IX Wireless; 22 of those MPs have previously diverted public money to the NRG.
In the case of Matt Vickers, Tory MP for Stockton South, he authorised £2,500 from his office allowance to go to the NRG in mid-June 2021. Three weeks later, he was the recipient of a £2,500 campaign donation from IX Wireless. Mr Vickers did not respond to a request for comment"
So public money intended for staff etc was funding the NRG.

Kiwano · 13/07/2023 08:03

It would be nice to think that all 22 would fall on their swords and resign, given that that is blatant corruption. Something tells me, however, that if Sunak is asked about it we will just get another barrage of Stop the Boats.

Could someone explain what this means for the acutely dumb (ie me)?

I can't imagine many of them will survive the next GE, but not really the point.

Notonthestairs · 13/07/2023 08:22

😬 Tiddles I've read it 4 times and am not convinced I grasp it.

I think - and will be happy to be corrected- that 20 plus MPs used public money (business cost budgets) to fund the NRG - in return received the same or similar amounts from a private donor.

But business costs budgets aren't intended to be used for subscriptions to research groups. They are for staff and office costs.

And obviously it was coincidental that they received the same sums back from donor.

PerkingFaintly · 13/07/2023 08:27

Is it the case that IX Wireless wanted to fund the Northern Research Group, but didn't want to be seen to fund it?

So they laundered the donations through the 22 MPs' offices?

Sky seems to be saying that political donations can be used for a wider range of purposes - not just staff/offices but to fund re-election campaigns.

So maybe the donor wanted the NRG to be funded but the individual MPs needed to top up election fighting funds and this was a way to achieve both.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 13/07/2023 08:46

Nope, still don't understand.

PerkingFaintly · 13/07/2023 08:56

Not very sure I do either, but I'll have a go.

Presumably the MPs didn't realise they weren't allowed to spend their business costs budgets on the NRG. They believed this bit was permitted by the regs.

However they knew they weren't allowed to spend their business costs budgets on political campaigning (IIUC).

IX Wireless wanted to fund the NRG covertly.

So they came up with a scheme where they all benefitted.

The MPs' offices paid money from their business costs budgets to the NRG, so the NRG benefitted and IX Wireless benefitted by not appear as a donor to the NRG.

IX Wireless then gave the same amount of money to the MPs' offices, which may have been described in the accounts as political donations. So the MPs benefit because they now have the same amount of money to play with as before, but can now use this money for election campaigning instead of just for office costs.

Jenny Jones HoL immigration bill

The final two votes last night were both Govt losses, 157/114 and 154/107, so nine losses overall in this ping-pong round. The House then adjourned at 00.28am, when 261 peers had to get home, many over 70(!), some with a journey of an hour or more

Yes 👏 Perking - but I think they must have known staff/office £££ were not intended to be used to fund internal research groups.
