Double vs king size bed

We have a double. It’s fine in winter but feels a bit close in summer. I think it is workable as DH is a shift worker which means there’s usually only 4 nights a week maximum where we are sharing a bed all night. We live in a new build and there wouldn’t be room for a bigger bed in our room, but equally I hope we’re not compromising on sleep quality - my friend recoiled in horror when I told her we haven’t got a king size as she has a super king and wouldn’t go back. If space was abundant we’d probably get a bigger bed but we live in a small two bed and it just is what it is unfortunately. Does anyone else find a double fine?

I hate doubles. I have a super king size. Miles between us.

GreenIsTheMagicColour · 23/06/2023 23:00

A double is far too small for us. I need my space in bed.

NeedleFeltedFox · 23/06/2023 23:02

I took all the bedroom furniture out of my new build bedroom so I could get my super king in. All our stuff lived in bedroom 2. Sacrifices had to be made but it was worth it!

Perfect unless you need bedroom 2 for a bedroom!

King size all the way, feel too cramped in a double with DH and DDog!!

mynameiscalypso · 23/06/2023 23:05

I think a double is fine if it's all you've known - we had one for years. The problem is when you've got a bigger bed, it's impossible to imagine sleeping in a double with another person. We had to do it at the weekend and we drove each other mad.

morelippy · 23/06/2023 23:06

I'd have a super king next to a super king if I could. Never too much room.

I'd say go as big as you can

LittleMonks11 · 23/06/2023 23:06

There isn't a bed in the world big enough for my space needs these days!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 23/06/2023 23:06

I find a double just fine for myself. With DH? Not a snowball's hope in hell.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/06/2023 23:07

I have a Super King and DH is in another room.

I still cling to the edge because of BastardSpaniel

Tipintorecession · 23/06/2023 23:07

Agree, double is unbelievably small for 2 people. Cram in a king size !

Jennywren2000 · 23/06/2023 23:08

I find a double is waaaay to cosy

ILoveCookie · 23/06/2023 23:09

King sized.

The last double we slept in was in a self catering cottage in the Cotswolds. I made us leave a night early because, after several sleepless nights with DH up against me, breathing in my ear, I couldn’t take it any longer. It was either leave early or I was going to beat him to death the with bedside light at 3am.

vinoandbrie · 23/06/2023 23:10

Super King here.

WhatILoved · 23/06/2023 23:11

I share a double with husband. Seems fine for me. I'm sure if I had a king I'd find it hard to go back.

thebloodycatwontstopmeowing · 23/06/2023 23:11

I'm not sure how two people manage to sleep in a double, especially in the summer

If stuck with a double, surely DH would have to go Grin

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/06/2023 23:12

Too small for us.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/06/2023 23:14

We've got a king, a double is far too small. Hate staying elsewhere when we have to share a double.

PickAChew · 23/06/2023 23:15

Sounds like you're doing fine with a double but a king is so much better. I could do with a double to myself. These days.

LadyEloise1 · 23/06/2023 23:17

Apparently two adults sharing a standard double bed - 4ft 6 inches across - is like them having the width of a cot ( almost ) each. 😱

USaYwHatNow · 23/06/2023 23:21

We have a super king and have done for about 5 years. For the 2 years previous we had a standard divan double. I have literally no idea how we managed to fit in it when I see it in the spare room now 😂. For reference my husband is 6'3, I'm 5'7 and we used to have to take it in turns to roll over. Nightmare 😂

I've been thinking the same OP.

We are hopefully moving in October and will have room for a king size. The thing putting me off is the expense of the mattress. We paid £2k 8 years ago for an orthopaedic super comfy mattress as we both get sciatica and it's still so comfy/in perfect condition.

It would cost a fortune to get a mattress as decent in king size.

My DH is a fidget and I often wake up to his arm across my face/a knee in the back/him over my side of the bed and drives me insane.

Mattresses are so expensive, aren’t they?! We have a hybrid one too and it’s a couple thousand, so it is a big cost to replace but worth the investment. We’ve not had a baby yet (hopefully will try soon) but just not sure how comfortable a double would be for sharing through pregnancy. And if we got a dog - also on our list of future things to do - I couldn’t possibly say no to them sleeping on the bed so like a PP says maybe would need a bigger one if dog was sharing too haha

Get the biggest bed you can get for your bedroom, you will not regret it!
