I hate gnomes, what's your pet hate?

Just a thread for fun. I have been reading the funeral ones in classics and it reminded me of my late mother. We bought a beautiful cottage in a posh village and I returned home from a holiday to find gnomes in my flower beds.
I got my own back by burying her in a sparkly Bet Lynch top (I had asked her what she wanted to wear at her demise she said 'suprise me, but I'll be dead'.My mother enjoyed black humour as her best friend was a Vicar and she had been a police officer. I still hate gnomes and spotted them in our new village this week. AIBU?

My grandmother swore gnomes were evil and let in burglars. She may have had a point.

Bubblyb00b · 23/06/2023 22:06
  • dungarees - unbelievable ugly shit. especially when worn with nothing underneath.
  • mimes - no idea why they exist, everyhting about them is so bad it makes my eyes water, they are bad taste, cringey and unpleasant.
  • vocal fry - WTF, what even is that and why?????
Bubblyb00b · 23/06/2023 22:07

IMHO gnomes are ok. Unless there are too many of them.

Good grief!

https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_gnome

The travelling gnome or roaming gnome is a garden gnome lawn ornament brought on a trip and photographed in front of famous landmarks. The practice is called gnoming. Some instances have become national and international news stories, where people have stolen a garden gnome from a garden, and then sent the owner photos of the gnome for a period of time as a practical joke, before returning it.

The Garden Gnome Liberation Front in France is a community that considers gnoming to be stealing garden gnomes from other people's property, without the intention of returning them, as part of their purported mission to "free" gnomes and "return them to the wild", which has sometimes led to criminal charges, jail timecitation neededd^], or fines.

In 2016, an ASDA Gnome named Gnorman was stolen from its owner in Luton, England. The perpetrator sent him a letter stating "Goodbyes are not forever, Goodbyes are not the end, They simply mean I‘ll miss you, Until we meet again.", and then continued to taunt him by making a Facebook profile in the Gnome's name then followed by posting pictures of it in many locations, such as the cinema, pubs, a trampoline park, a bowling alley, and an arcade.

People going out wearing pyjamas..takes the same amount of time to put proper clothes on.

maslinpan · 24/06/2023 10:32

Poinsettias. They just seem to draw light in to them and they have a horrible texture.

FancyFran · 24/06/2023 12:56

@Ihateboris agreed. I also hate the pony tail on a Sunday because they are too lazy to wash their hair. What else haven't they washed?

Bubblyb00b · 24/06/2023 20:13

@FancyFran OMG that!!! hate it too. "I can't see it so no one else can" )))

RelativePitch · 24/06/2023 20:23

Nail files- I swear people wait for me to turn up to start using them.
People who whistle
Dummies- my poor DS1 really needed one as a newborn, I just couldn't cope with them- it looked claustrophobic and chafing. He found his thumb in the end.
Clearly lots of sensory things going on with me!

cassiatwenty · 24/06/2023 20:25

Can't believe nobody mentioned ASMR youtube videos

Sorry I meant some of the comments! The ones not about gnomes, that people use to have a gig at others tastes I appreciate you just started it in a jokey way!

FancyFran · 25/06/2023 09:27

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER we have lots in our semi rural location. We still have a biggish one to get off our farm (which we don't live on anymore) and I bought a mini. I bloody love it. First small car I have owned since an MG midget at 17. I bomb along and everyone is courteous . No chance in a Chelsea Tractor! Also a doddle to parallel park. I am not going back. And I am getting like my mother!

Not keen on gnomes here either. My late parents had a few when I was little - I think they bought them assuming I'd like them but they always freaked me out.

Garden-wise I'm also in the 'hate artificial grass and plants' camp, particularly plastic topiary and those hanging balls of 'plants' you see flanking front doors. We know people who have 50+ acres and are multimillionaires yet they put those awful fake topiary trees by their front entrance. Recently drove past a house with rows of plastic flowers stuck into the flowerbeds...awful!

Ditto plastic garden furniture although this doesn't include our lovely Gloster faux rattan which I defy anyone to tell from the real thing, especially when it's white plastic chairs in front gardens.

AlexTfan · 23/06/2023 11:10

On the garden theme:

hanging baskets

too much colour

clumps of colourful plants arranged at regular intervals

rattan or plastic rattan garden furniture

borders

decking

water features

too much of everything

How do you have the time or energy to have so much opinion on this

SouthCountryGirl · 25/06/2023 12:06

People who get on public transport and stand in front of seats instead of the standing area.

Net curtains.

whenever I visit England I’m astounded by the love of net curtains

FancyFran · 25/06/2023 12:45

@BlueThursday we British tell a lot about people by the state of their nets!

I hate them but I did once have Laura Ashley lace panels.

I am not really keen on nets but I dislike the feeling of living in a goldfish bowl without them.

I only have them in the living room and bedroom
