Thread 5 - a continuation.

My heart aches for those poor men and their families. 💔😔

I've learnt a lot - thanks for bearing with my questions. I am bowing out the thread now. I'm so thankful we have the technology to go that deep and find them. May their families find peace.

Challenger was certainly pricey, much much more expensive and that sure as hell didn’t last very long, did it? And this wasn’t the first trip the sun had made by any means.

But the funding for that isn't there it seems. That's what the CEO said. But by offering these passenger trips, it meant they funded the research. Clearly this was his pet project but in some of the interviews, it's clear that he had a real passion for the ocean and in his own misguided way, was trying to do something good. Obviously that went very wrong but as a human, he was obviously flawed (aren't we all?!) but it isn't as simple as he was a bad man trying to make money out of people in his makeshift sub.

He said he wasn’t making any money out of it so this was for the love of exploration and possibly experimentation. Sadly this need clouded his view of the risk involved with taking a vessel, which had already been damaged down to such pressure repeatedly.

EbonyRaven · 22/06/2023 22:33

Of FFS ANOTHER thread about this?! Hmm

We know these men have (sadly) died. Let it be now.

It's just GHOULISH now to keep starting new threads. And don't say 'don't click on them then!' It's on bloody TRENDING. No choice but to see the title!

SheilaFentiman · 22/06/2023 22:34

If you post, you will add to that “trending” 🤷‍♀️

Goggin57 · 22/06/2023 22:34

Some shocking comments on here about the victims and their families. These are real people. May they RIP and may their families be left to grieve in peace.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 22:34

People are still trying to come to terms with the shock, anger and grief. To some, it helps being able to write down the way they feel and discuss with others. There's no malice intended.

Why are people trotting out the line rich white men time and time again... racism is alive and well 🙄

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 22:35

DumboLives · 22/06/2023 22:30

The sub itself was the wrong shape to be strong enough. The strongest 3-d shape is a sphere, stress or pressure is distributed equally along the arc instead of concentrating at any one point (think balls, planets etc).

But it cannot fit as many people in. Hopefully this industry will get to be regulated now and not just become a cowboy enterprise.

This makes sense. Do you know the logic behind the shape of Limiting Factor? The part the people sit in seems to be spherical but the rest is rectangular.

HotTeaPlease · 22/06/2023 22:37

People are still trying to come to terms with the shock, anger and grief.

oh ffs. You will carry on your life as normal, work, shopping, meals out, whatever you normally do. You have nothing to ‘come to terms with’. It’s just attention seeking.

I have learned a lot on these threads too. I've learned SOS in Morse Code, that the internationally recognised distress signal is to bang for 3 minutes every 30 minutes, a lot about physics etc. There have been a lot of sensitive, thoughtful and informative posts on these threads.

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 22/06/2023 22:39

On thread 4 someone suggested that the CEO should be sued.
How can he be sued when he was on the sub and died along with the other 4 passengers?

You can sue the estate of a person especially if they have money but apart from that there is a company here that was running $250,000 a ticket trips so it probably has some cash.

I don't know which jurisdiction it would be under but a wife of billionaire supported by her husband is likely to have a fairly chunky dependency claim

I wonder if the Titan was insured - I doubt it given the issues with regulation and safety. If not, I think they have a cash flow problem - no sub and no customers.
.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 22:39

I definitely wouldn't say this is attention seeking. The world has been on edge awaiting the news of these poor men's fate. No matter who they are, what they do, where they are from, they are people. Like you and I. They deserve respect, and to be remembered. Many of us have been so very worried for them and the desperate situation they found themselves in, and so it makes sense that there are questions and people wanting to share their thoughts.

OP posts:
Imissingrid · 22/06/2023 22:40

why did this one implode? Other have been down & got back up safely - somewhat! Is it because this one was damaged & repaired creating a weakness?

I think it’s like using a riding hat or crash helmet that’s previously been in an accident. It’s caused stress damage so the sub ( or riding hat or crash helmet) isn’t as strong as it was.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 22/06/2023 22:41

I‘m quite upset but not shocked by this.

Hopefully others thinking of taking risky trips like this ensure that it’s 100% safe and not some Mickey Mouse outfit like this company was and also other families who have people “obsessed” by certain things and want to coerce others into going along think about their silly obsession and try to get them to think rationally. That poor boy. His mother must be furious yet sad about/with her husband.

Exactly. I have found the scientific and maritime information shared to be fascinating, not ghoulish at all.

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 22/06/2023 22:42

@ThreeRingCircus

that the internationally recognised distress signal is to bang for 3 minutes every 30 minutes,

I'm sure we will all find this useful when we are bolted in to failing sub at the bottom of the ocean.

I saw a post on Twitter that said something like is there a single woman on earth who would have voluntarily got into a sub that you couldn't open from the inside and was bolted shut with 17 bolts to go to the bottom of the ocen, put your hands up.

I'm sure there are one or two but it would be a tiny number compared to men, it's a very male bragging rights chest thumping idiotic activity.

notimagain · 22/06/2023 22:42

Mademetoxic · 22/06/2023 22:24

One minute the media say that they're still alive potentially and oxygen running out. Next we hear 'bangs' now they say they died instantly and debris has been found.

We will never know the full story.

RIP to them all.

"the media say" ..there's the problem...most of the media haven't had a clue when it comes to this operation and have been thrashing around filling air time speculating....worse still the level of technical knowledge they have displayed has been at times utterly dire - not understanding the difference between radar and sonar for example.

If you step back from the noise and crap the media have been generating and instead only consider what the actual coastguard and other experts involved directly in the search have said there was zero speculation, and for example no mention of regular banging and distress signals (they just mentioned noise).

As for the speed of the discovery today...not really surprising...if you were running the search then as soon as you had an ROV on task and without compelling evidence to do otherwise you would send to down to the intended destination of the missing vessel...so no real mystery about why the wreckage was found so swiftly once an ROV arrived...

Lifeomars · 22/06/2023 22:42

Trixiefirecracker · 22/06/2023 21:41

On the titanic? That would make him very old indeed.

"worked on the Titanic", would that be pre or post disaster?

DumboLives · 22/06/2023 22:43

I believe they all had to sign a disclaimer which mentioned death three times on the first page so not sure if any claim will hold. I hope the American authorities crack down on these ventures and stop this freakish and unregulated tourism.

The Titanic was built with zero safety in mind which is why so many died. She should be left in peace, with respect to the victims of that night.

Not sure I can offer them much respect for them apart from the French man and the son.

The father and the CEO I really cannot think of them in terms of respect but I’m sorry they’ve died and I’m sad too and my condolences go out to their families.

I couldn't ever imagine putting my life at the hands of a PlayStation controlled. That's absolutely terrifying.

The military use gaming controllers to control subs, tanks, drones etc. I'm not saying it's a good idea to have used them for this but they're used in dangerous situations to protect lives more than I ever realised.

Dh told me this long before this incident, when our nephew joined the army, he made a joke about his years of gaming and using the controller being a useful skill and I didn't believe him until I read up a bit myself. Here's a few links to articles that have published since the recent events.

Yep was at the hairdressers today and the stylist plus a client were saying the same re it being men who tend to go on these trips. The CEO in his video came across as one of the worst types of male braggart I’ve seen for a long time.

New threads always seem to start this way. We usually get rich white men, followed by what about the migrants, the 19 year old, conspiracy theories and then a couple of posters who seem to have clicked on the thread by accident and have been asleep for the past 5 days and post ridiculous comments about fiber glass or something equally inane.

But there are always some great posters who share insights and most of us somehow find some comfort in sharing our shock and feelings about this awful event.

@HundredMilesAnHour LOL! made me laugh- thank you. What a perfect summary, especially about the posters who have been asleep for the past 5 days making an appearance.
