So if everything implodes that deep how has the wreckage and all the debris survived the water pressure?

Literally asked and answered a few posts above yours. (Also many times on the thread/s but hey)

Emotionalsupportviper · 23/06/2023 13:05

@mrsnjw

Metal is denser than flesh. It survives, but is still affected. One of the bits of information on a link previously posted said that "even steel shrinks". However because it is a dense material it can withstand the pressure better and is less affected. If not, they wouldn't be able to go to any great depths in any sort of craft.

Our bodies are something like 70% water, and are very fragile - it takes very little to completely annihilate us.

uptoeleven · 23/06/2023 12:53

I knew that. That's where I heard about the story, this year's Chelsea Flower Show winning garden. Doesn't change the fact that they went to the polar bear's habitat on a very expensive holiday to gawk at starving polar bears.

And Marteenie you may wish to doff your cap to these billionaire 'philantrophists' but I very doubt they would care two straws about you or funding scholarships for people like you. If he was a genuine philantrophists he wouldn't still be a billionaire.

People can do both things, do you spend all of your money on helping people or do you do some things you also enjoy? Well, I spend my money on living, looking after family and some charity, you know, normal stuff, unlike insane thrill rides that get people killed.

And exploration is one thing, going on a dangerous jaunt like the Titanic one for no other benefit but look in fascination at other people's gravesite is another. Ditto Elon Musk's Mars mission or Everest tourists causing harm to the environment and local people.

Your ignorance is astounding but as with anything you're entitled to your opinion and no point trying to change it as you evidently aren't keen to listen. I don't doth my cap to them but working in the field I do I understand the valuable financial people like these make to people passionate about these things. It's a (very) deep sea dive, looking at titanic is merely a way to attract people to want to invest in it and yes there's a lot to be learnt from pushing these boundaries. I agree everest is bad because the local guides often die but they take the jobs because they need the money- that's extremely exploitative. You might not see the value in Elon investing in space research, but you benefit from things humans have done and are doing everyday in space so I'm not sure you quite grasp why these investments in otherwise largely underfunded areas are important.

She does have a strange affect, but I am reluctant to criticise anyone experiencing such shock and grief - people respond in different ways. She may be being disingenuous, but she may equally just be managing to hold things together, and still be in a state of shock.

I know that it has been reported that she and her brother weren't on good terms, but that doesn't mean that she won't be knocked sideways by his dreadful death, and of course, the death of her nephew.

Marteenie · 23/06/2023 13:09

I love the hypocrisy though that everyone is equal- except if you're rich then you're fair game for criticism.

@Emotionalsupportviper thank you

You're welcome.

It's easy to miss information in a busy, fast-moving thread like this one. never worry about asking.

Yeah I never said everyone was equal. Fuck the rich. No one gets rick through not fucking people over at some point or creating inequality.

I think people are just trying to justify their morbid fascination with this case by going on about how sad they are.

uptoeleven · 23/06/2023 13:18

if you're rich then you're fair game for criticism. Err, yeah 🙄

Aww, the poor rich people, everyone's so mean to them. 😥

toomuchlaundry · 23/06/2023 10:32

Also I find the description of the young lad in the news articles quite strange, in the BBC one they mention he likes to do the Rubik's cube. Maybe, they are just quoting what they have been told by family or friends but this gives the impression to me he is not the one for wild risk taking adventures

His aunt was just on Sky News stating that he didn’t want to go and that it was a Father’s Day present for his dad. This makes it even more heartbreaking.

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/06/2023 13:20

And right on cue, as we reach the halfway point for the thread the mudslinging between posters (most of which is unrelated to any actual facts) ignites yet again. We're at least consistent.

🙄

HotTeaPlease · 23/06/2023 11:50

Yes, I absolutely should acknowledge the genuine, intelligent and educated posts from some. I've learned a bit from reading these threads, and want to thank those posters for sharing their knowledge

Some posters spend 10 minutes googling, write it on here and you think they actually know what they’re talking about.

And other posters have actually spent time in submarines doing research. Think those were the types off post referred to.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/06/2023 13:25

Ditto Elon Musk's Mars mission or Everest tourists causing harm to the environment and local people

There have been tons letters to Martian Daily by local people disgruntled by Elon Musk. The issues the local community face were even acknowledged by Breakfast on Mars the other day, Extraterrestrial Channel 2.

Well, that's not surprising, is it?
There's literally nothing else to say now.
The unfortunate people are dead.

Rich people or not, they're still dead.

But I do not approve of people praising the rich, I must admit. Maybe that's because I've never been rich? I don't know. I do know that there have been times in my life when there has been nothing to eat in my food cupboards. Not nowadays but when the children were younger.

So I am not keen on rich people.
But I am sorry that this particular group of rich people died because their families will be grieving.

broadbezb · 23/06/2023 13:29

Those were the sorts of posts referred to. Correct.

And the sensible general comments. Some sifting through rubbish, and repetition, as you'd expect on a general thread, though MNHQ are deleting a lot of that too it would appear.

Splishsploshsplash · 23/06/2023 13:40

GrinAndVomit · 23/06/2023 05:54

Jesus. Is that really where we are now as a society?

So you feel overwhelming grief and sadness for these men do you? How about every other person who dies needlessly every day? If so, how do you actually function?

Words like devastated, fuming, livid etc. are completely overused these days.

It’s absolutely fine to say only their loved ones should find this “devastating”.

It’s also fine to point out the ridiculous amount of resources spent searching for them.

Mistressofnone · 23/06/2023 13:47

It seems the aunt spoke out yesterday about her nephew being 'terrified' and has maybe released this video as a more measured response. I kind of appreciate her sentiment that her brother loved the Titanic and is now a part of its legend.

It's hard to believe that just yesterday, many of us believed the men could still be hunched together, hanging onto their last breaths after five days in that tiny capsule, 2½ miles under the sea. I hope the same questions will still be asked, in terms of safety, supplies and the inhumane expectations to even spend 8 hours bolted in there.

The British Schools Exploration Society is not an organisation to go and 'gawk at polar bears', it is designed to allow young people from all backgrounds to go to these extreme environments. Another boy who was badly injured on that trip, was an ordinary lad from Cornwall.

This develops them on a personal level, and also offers them the experience necessary to maybe work in these environments in future, doing important scientific and conservation work. Work opportunities which would otherwise only be available to people with rich daddies who can buy them this experience.

None of this can be compared with the billionaires' Titanic or space trips in any way shape or form.

Cucucucu · 23/06/2023 14:00

Ponderingwindow · 22/06/2023 21:42

might I ask why your heart is broken for these men? I don’t relish anyone’s death, but they chose to engage in an extremely risky activity and this was the natural consequence. Does your heart also break for the people who die on Everest or during other “extreme” high risk tourism? It is sad, but I wouldn’t rank it worse than the pain suffered by many other families today throughout the world whose loved ones died in much more ordinary ways.

our local radio station in the us had an expert on yesterday who talked about the sounds that metal makes as a vessel is imploding. A large vessel can take months to collapse. They said a smaller one might take days. The analogy used was an aluminum can being slowly crushed and breaking apart. You would hear the sound of the metal echo through the ocean with each shape change.

At least someone with common sense . I feel for the loss of life , mostly the young boy who seems to have been bullied by his dad to go . But there is so much tragedy in the world . This are 5 millionaires who probably enjoyed more than any of us here ( bar the por lad who really was young ) and who put themselves in that position . There are thousands of babies dying every day from starvation and lack of clean water , as an example , where is the OP heartbreaking for them ? Where is the outcry ?

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 23/06/2023 14:09

@Fisharejumping
there's a proverb (Japanese?) "may you live a boring life"

My old priest used to ask us to pray for those afflicted with great wealth. That always made me stop and think.

Afflicted…

I've always thought it's not true to say you can never be too thin or too rich.

Too rich is where you can't tell if people want to be your friend because of you or because of your many houses/yacht/vast wealth or at the point where your family and children are at risk of kidnap for randsom.

That's no way to live.

It's much better to be very well off - so you don't want for anything - but not super-rich so that you can afford a £250k death trip.

Locutus2000 · 23/06/2023 14:11

Comedycook · 23/06/2023 11:07

I can't remember exactly...but I'm sure I heard it somewhere...no idea if it's true or not. Have a google though

In this situation the onus is on you to 'have a google' before making baseless assertions.
