It's always the same on these general threads. There are knowledgeable, measured, posts and posters but some rubbish to sift through as well @kittensinthekitchen

Sorry I cannot find the original post to quote but

@Nesbi

Absolutely spot on 👏👏

That's the Internet for you. I expect it will get worse now the news will slow down as is always the way

While it is sad for people to lose their lives, especially young people, accidents like this don't feel like a tragedy to me. Rather like an incredibly stupid stunt by overentitled people playing God.

Billionaires doing risky deep sea missions for fun. Elon Musk in space. Everest tourists. Eton student killed by a polar bear in its own habitat. And so on.

How about fewer extreme vanity projects and investing the money and effort into helping suffering people? Just a thought. Or if a billionaire's life is boring go join the relief effort in a war zone. Go visit a refugee camp to help. Volunteer in a food bank. Or summat.

Yes, so many of these (tragic), preventable incidents are caused because people who have too much money start to believe they’re invincible, that they are somehow of a different human set than the rest of us. Elon Musk’s ridiculous endeavours to go to Mars is one of the most self indulgent vanity projects and yet there will still be people with more money than sense queuing up to get a place on the rocket. Why doesn’t he focus his time and fortune on the actual planet he’s living on! I hope this will be the end of touristy type trips to the Titanic especially in a vessel that looks like it was cobbled together by a primary school junk art project.

Yes, I absolutely should acknowledge the genuine, intelligent and educated posts from some. I've learned a bit from reading these threads, and want to thank those posters for sharing their knowledge Flowers

Agree with this 100%. Humanity needs savings from itself.

Some posters spend 10 minutes googling, write it on here and you think they actually know what they’re talking about.

Pebble21uk · 23/06/2023 11:52

Marteenie · 23/06/2023 11:32

People can do both things, do you spend all of your money on helping people or do you do some things you also enjoy?

Admittedly I don't know much about the others, but Hamish Harding and the Explorers Club have done lots of philanthropic things so you are just being ignorant and judging based on the fact they dare to be rich (which is a sin to many people for some reason). Perhaps before you make posts like this it would be worth doing a bit of research?

I am a working class black woman who has benefited from scholarships to allow me to afford to study and exploration has played a big part in a lot of developments that we all benefit from. For sure there are a lot of issues with this particular one and i hope changes are made, but sick of the judgement and assumptions made by the ignorant.

I don't want to derail but completely agree @Marteenie. My partner taught the boy who was killed by a polar bear (not when he was at Eton) and it happened on my wedding day - many guests were naturally very upset.

His father is a spinal surgeon specialist. His parents have founded a charity called 'Horatio's Garden'. In the intervening years it has built 8 gardens on NHS hospital sites all over the country for those suffering from spinal injury. Please don't post in ignorance - you never know who is reading.

AllOfThemWitches · 23/06/2023 11:56

So, when a young man is killed by a shark in the sea, the general consensus here is 'play stupid games, etc.' but when rich, older men take a massive risk in the ocean it's a tragedy...

dottyshihtzu · 23/06/2023 11:57

Rush speaks of this warning ‘cracking’ sound when hull/sub compromised, but what’s the point? You can’r surface in time.

I'm struggling to understand his 'logic'. Someone with more knowledge correct me if I'm wrong, but if something had cracked on the sub, like the window for example, then wouldn't the people on board have been wiped from existence less than a second later?

They'd be dead before their brain could even register it, so why the hell was he relying on 'cracking sounds' as warnings when you're fucked the instant that cracking happens?

Some don't even do that - they just jump in with both feet and post something inane that has already been said multiple times and more clearly and concisely.

Florissante · 23/06/2023 12:00

kittensinthekitchen · 23/06/2023 11:33

Then stop fucking posting shit that you don't know (this goes for many, many comments on these past 5 threads, which I've read in their entirety but not posted on yet)

A green pig swam past the sub, gave them the thumbs up, then activated the self destruction button on the side of the window.

Now, someone can go post that they heard/read that a green pig swam past the sub, gave them the thumbs up, then activated the self destruction button on the side of the window.

Maybe it's true. Maybe it's not.

The lack of critical thinking when it comes to posting rumours and uneducated bullshit from inauthentic sources has been astounding on these threads.

People say we need to keep our kids safe from misinformation online - I think some of you need to start learning that yourselves, or your kids are fucked.

Seriously. I remember the poster who claimed that her husband 'knew' that sleeping tablets are 'a thing' in these situations, with another poster (possibly a sock puppet) agreeing with her.

Florissante · 23/06/2023 12:02

There are many factors as to why a 19 year old could be pressured or influenced or taken advantage of due to a power differential with an older adult, especially when that adult is a parent and when there could be cultural factors as play regarding parent-adult child dynamics. Displeasing your father, saying no to your father, dishonouring your father's wishes etc can all lead to negative consequences for an adult child who is seen as being disrespectful by the culture.

This is all crass and baseless speculation. What an awful post.

Of course it's a tragedy... people died, people with loved ones and families, a woman has lost a husband and a 19 year old son

@Marteenie
“I still stand by the fact that the search was so extensive because an S&R at this depth is highly unusual and callously perhaps it's excellent training for crews.”

Exactly. This was the U.S. Coast Guard working with the U.S. Navy and they have a lot of submarines that go very deep. Would all those people complaining about the extent of the search also complain about the expense of searching for trapped sailors? Or would they rather leave a nineteen year old sailor (who probably only joined for the college subsidy) to die, or leave his parents to spend the rest of their lives never knowing what happened?

They found the remains of the sub, they’ve determined the likely cause, they can inform the relatives. And all involved now have the expertise needed if they have to do it again. Whether the people in the sub are billionaires or not, this is the Coast Guard’s job. S&R is what they do. What they learnt this week may end up saving someone in the future.

“I still stand by the fact that the search was so extensive because an S&R at this depth is highly unusual and callously perhaps it's excellent training for crews.”

I see nothing wrong in making practical training use of a necessary search.

Sky News website is still crammed full of articles about this right now, the cynic in me is thinking this tragedy has been dragged out to distract us especially considering the Us Navy knew pretty much that an implosion had happened.

The question is…distract us from what? 🧐

Oh for goodness sake.

It's crammed with articles because people are interested in this. The news channels are just giving people what they want - there's demand for content and they're providing it. That's the business model - provide content people will click on or watch, get the eyeballs on your content, reep the advertising £££.

This whole idea that reported news is manipulated to "distract" us is such overblown conspiracy nonsense.

Absolutely governments have taken advantage of busy news agendas to try to sneak out announcements they don't want a lot of publicity on (if anyone remembers the scandal around 9/11 being a "good day to bury bad news"). But media organisations are quite wise to these games...they're trying to find the stuff that governments are attempting to "bury", they're not working in cahoots to bury it.

The idea that events like this are actually themselves being manipulated to provide a "distraction" is just tosh.

Fisharejumping · 23/06/2023 12:19

there's a proverb (Japanese?) "may you live a boring life"

My old priest used to ask us to pray for those afflicted with great wealth. That always made me stop and think.

Afflicted…

CallieQ · 23/06/2023 12:19

Stickybackplasticbear · 22/06/2023 23:13

I'm absolutely blown away by people being so dramatic about stupid rich people doing rich people shit. The time and money which has gone into trying to rescue them from their own stupidity and people are fawning over their poor families.

Maybe with all their money they should / could have done something less redic.

It's also a gross and unethical thing for them to do in the first place. It's a site of massive tragedy. Not a tourist attractions. The people saying its so tragic need a good re examination of their moral compass.

So do you

Redic??

Inastatus · 23/06/2023 09:10

@Gilmorehill - I can’t quote your post for some reason but this is what has upset me the most. The 19 year old’s aunt said he was terrified but went along with it to please his dad and have a bonding experience for Father’s Day. I know the father has died too but apparently the Titanic was his obsession so he died living his dream and probably understood the risks more fully than his son. I just think it’s so irresponsible to have persuaded his son into doing it with him.

I don't think the aunt should have released this information. The boy might not have confided this to his mother-and if not it will tear her to pieces hearing it now.

TokyoStories · 23/06/2023 12:24

I’m not sure if this is even the right place to post this now since this thread seems to be mostly people sniping at one another, but here is an interesting article about the first dive to the Challenger Deep in 1960, during which the viewing port cracked

Quote from BBC:

According to dive expert David Mearns, the debris includes "a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible"

As a complete lay person, can someone explain why there would be some debris remaining when everything seems to suggest an implosion would have completely obliterated everything?
