The James Cameron CNN interview linked above by another poster is very interesting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=5XIyin68vEE

For those saying 'he's no expert', he actually is. He has designed and built with experts a deep sea submersible, has been to the wreck of the Titanic 33 times and has been even deeper.

I was just reading his Wiki page - and in other news, he has been married ... have a guess how many times...

I find the infantilisation of the 19 year old really odd. Over 11,000 of America’s dead soldiers in Vietnam were 19 years or younger (average age of dead soldiers was 23).

It is young, and it is a tragedy, but he was not a child. He was the age at which a lot of young men find they are full of testosterone and bravado and willingness to take risks.

Some people here almost seem to be want it to be true that he was “terrified” or that his father made him do it. I think it is unlikely that a terrified young man would have been allowed in the sub as he would have been perceived as a danger to everyone else on there.

Countless 19 year old young men have died through misadventure, and countless more will continue to do so. In that sense this young man’s death is tragic but sadly not that unusual.

I agree with you. Very sensible post.

It's another age, but my own father was married and owned a home at 18. I was living independently at a university overseas. Not unusual. Times change but they're still adults.

broadbezb · 23/06/2023 10:20

"For those saying 'he's no expert', he actually is. He has designed and built with experts a deep sea submersible, has been to the wreck of the Titanic 33 times and has been even deeper."

Correct. He is considered an expert in this field.

Comedycook · 23/06/2023 10:22

I heard the sub was bolted shut with 18 bolts but they routinely just did 17 of them. If this is true then wtaf? Why would you go ahead with such a risky mission with a laissez-faire attitude...ah that'll do. I'd take more care than that building flat pack furniture

BeefyWellington · 23/06/2023 10:23

Picoloangel · 22/06/2023 21:46

I’m sure others have raised this but I simply can’t get my head around taking a 19 year old on a mission such as this. Some of those on board were thrill seekers and explorers - I don’t mean that unkindly - but they sought out near to the edge experiences and would perhaps have appreciated the risk. I just can’t get my head around taking my child on something as dangerous as this. I don’t intend this to be judgemental etc I literally cannot comprehend it.

Judge away - I absolutely am!

Imagine bringing about the death of your own child by dragging them along on a (entirely pointless) vanity outing, because you blatantly have far more money than sense. He signed a waiver, he knew the risks - but he still look his son down there with him.

At least he won't have to live with what he's done. It's just the rest of his family who will. What a legacy!

Absolutely selfish and such a pointless waste of a young life.

Extremely good interview- Thanks for link.

it really is, James Cameron is fascinating to listen to

HerVagestyTheQueef · 23/06/2023 10:26

I find the infantilisation of the 19 year old really odd.

This. But more than that the constant criticism of his MOTHER; a woman who has just lost both her husband and her son.
He was an adult. His mother could have advised against this (and probably did) but couldn't have stopped him. Especially when he's being encouraged by his father.

How about we stop blaming women for men's recklessness, stupidity, wrongdoing and misjudgements?

stbrandonsboat · 23/06/2023 10:28

That James Cameron chap knows his shit. Which is why he's still alive.

Rush appeared to be a cavalier fantasist with no attention to detail whatsoever.

That is a good interview and is useful

I’m not sure if declaring on the first day was appropriate, as he is well experienced but still, maybe 100% verification was appropriate

toomuchlaundry · 23/06/2023 10:29

@broadbezb weren't many of the young soldiers in Vietnam conscripted?

100% agree with this. I was absolutely appalled that such a young man (just a lad really) was even allowed on it. My heart breaks for him but I’m disgusted with his father and Stockton Rush, both selfish, more money than sense, irresponsible idiots. RIP Suleman, you deserved so much more from your father.

Yes and had shit all right n training and equipment.

Awful that they prob knew time was up when they heard the cracking noise. Rush speaks of this warning ‘cracking’ sound when hull/sub compromised, but what’s the point? You can’r surface in time.

toomuchlaundry · 23/06/2023 10:32

Also I find the description of the young lad in the news articles quite strange, in the BBC one they mention he likes to do the Rubik's cube. Maybe, they are just quoting what they have been told by family or friends but this gives the impression to me he is not the one for wild risk taking adventures

mpsw · 23/06/2023 10:33

Peanutbutteryday · 23/06/2023 06:44

I don’t know why they didnt report this at the outset

Because they would not necessarily want to signal (eg to the Russians or the Chinese) how quickly they could pick up an implosion of that size at that depth.

Real time? Close to real time from routine analysis? Later, because they went back to look once they had a known timing of disappearance?

willWillSmithsmith · 23/06/2023 10:35

For those defending Suleman’s father and saying Suleman is a man, yes technically he is but the poor lad was terrified of going and did it to please his father for Father’s Day. That makes me sad. It doesn’t of course take away from the young Vietnam war soldiers, that was terrible and I don’t think enough has been done by the US to address that particular atrocity. My heart bleeds for all of them.

SheilaFentiman · 23/06/2023 10:35

“I heard the sub was bolted shut with 18 bolts but they routinely just did 17 of them”

What was the source of this, please?

broadbezb · 23/06/2023 10:35

toomuchlaundry · 23/06/2023 10:29

@broadbezb weren't many of the young soldiers in Vietnam conscripted?

Correct. Around a third.
WW1 and WW2 also

Though you should know that I think.

Elerandooo · 23/06/2023 10:36

I think people are forgetting that at the time of the implosion, no reports had been filed that the submersible was missing. So whatever noise was picked up would have had to be analysed to check exactly what it was.

toomuchlaundry · 23/06/2023 10:40

But why use the age of young men going to fight in Vietnam (or any war) as an example of why we infantilise 19yos now. Those young men weren't going by choice, I bet most of them were petrified and probably just wanted their mum in their dying hours

That's not massively surprising. Experts in their field are often not the easiest people to live with. I can only imagine a partner plays third fiddle to deep sea exploration and film making.

Shade17 · 23/06/2023 10:40

Elerandooo · 23/06/2023 10:36

I think people are forgetting that at the time of the implosion, no reports had been filed that the submersible was missing. So whatever noise was picked up would have had to be analysed to check exactly what it was.

Of course the tech is top secret but I’m betting there was no retrospective action required. I’d imagine a computer caught the noise, identified it as an implosion and spat out whatever notification it does when it picks up something like this. It wouldn’t even surprise me if it worked out the size of the vessel that had imploded. They knew by Sunday night exactly what had happened to it.

CrunchyCarrot · 23/06/2023 10:41

If I blame anyone it's Stockton Rush. He was arrogant and didn't take enough precautions, ignored advice that the sub might fail. He's responsible for the deaths of those people. And of course paid the ultimate price himself.

I thought James Cameron's interview was very telling.

Nesbi · 23/06/2023 10:46

People are already stating he was terrified and doing it to please his father as if that is an established fact, when it is clearly no such thing. I hate the way the internet seems to encourage this sort of speculation and misinformation.

Another thing I keep seeing amongst the more judgmental post are variations of calling this a “vanity outing”. What else is a vanity outing? Scroll through instagram, or Facebook, or look at the itinerary of a gap year student and you will see all sorts of activities that could be dismissed as vanity outings.

that pic of you skiing at the top of a mountain - vanity outing.

that pic scuba diving in the Red Sea - vanity outing.

The post about the rainforest in Costa Rica - vanity outing.

Hiring that moped through the villages in Southern Italy - vanity outing.

bungy jumped? Vanity outing.

jumped from a plane. Vanity outing.

People with disposable income often spend it doing things they thing will be interesting, or unusual, that will make good pictures, give them something to talk about, help make them feel like they are experiencing the world rather than existing.

You could dismiss it all as just vanity outings.
